Geoffrey Keen

[edit]

I see that you have just "corrected" Geoffrey Keen's year of birth to 1918 — the year given, admittedly, in reference books and by the IMDb. However, according to his obituary in today's Times he was born in 1916. I have found that when The Times is at variance with standard sources in a matter such as this, it is usually right.

alderbourne 17:28, 7 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough - there was already a category of 1918 births on his page, so that needs changing too.

Cast lists

[edit]

Well, the thing is, the cast lists for the new series are relatively short compared to those for the classic series, and the idea was just to avoid clutter. I suppose one solution would simply be to select the most major roles. --khaosworks (talkcontribs) 15:39, 10 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Cheers for the correction to the article, much appriciated. Y control 12:06, 17 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

This was the entire contents:

"Born in England on 7th December 1960 (?). Tim is the bass player and joint founder of The Psychedelic Furs and the youngest of three brothers. Richard, the eldest is the lead singer of the Psychedelic Furs, Simon, the middle brother is a software engineer who lives in California. Son of Joan and Dr. George Butler. Tim currently lives in New Jersey."

Don't see anything that could be used. I'll keep it up for ya though. If you don't think it's keepable, just make it a redir to Psychadelic Furs. --Woohookitty(cat scratches) 12:32, 17 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Bartosz

[edit]

I was demonstrating Wikipedia to a friend, using the sandbox. The most interesting part is the creation of links, so I created a test link and proceeded with the editing of the new page. Unfortunately, the new page became part of Wikipedia and not just an extension of the sandbox. This is by no means an obvious thing. I was quickly caught red-handed as a vandal. If there is no easy way to track and clean up sandbox links, maybe a warning should be displayed not to create linked pages.

You removed links on Hollyoaks now wene the pages do meet requiremnts someone has to gto back and re add the links, Do YOU volunteer?--MatthewFenton 10:41, 3 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Do you watch Hollyoaks? Most of those charcters have had major story lines or are involved in one, However they are in otehr charcters as they have no family left in the village.--MatthewFenton 11:00, 3 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ok

[edit]

If pages for some will be removed i suggest removing them all, Maybe together we can incorperate more data into the Hollyoaks article its self.. Also the user pages will need to be deleted.. Do you know how to?--MatthewFenton 11:38, 3 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Doctor Who stubs

[edit]

Hi, Whouk. I've noticed that as you're recategorizing the Doctor Who stories you're also removing the "doctorwhostub" notices from pages that also have the section stub template. Why is that? I would have thought that it would be useful to Doctor Who WikiProject members to have a list of Doctor Who pages that need expanding, and if you remove the "doctorwhostub" template we can't see which pages still need work. (I'm sure you have a good reason for removing the stub notices, I'm just wondering what it is.) —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 18:30, 3 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, my bad. I thought I'd seen you remove more of the notices (which, as you say, are more helpful than the unspecific section stubs). Anyway, I suppose I'll see you somewhere in the middle of the alphabet! :) —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 18:38, 3 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

anemone & anenome

[edit]

Hi Whouk! I agree, in an ideal world the redirect would just go to the correct spelling. In this case, however, I felt a little more comment and clarification was required. It is such a common mistake – misapprehension, even – yet I don't think it warrants mentioning on all of the relevant pages. I note that on Wikipedia:Manual of Style (disambiguation pages) the final section reads (and I quote):

==Break rules==
For every style suggestion above, there's some page which has a good reason to do something else. These guidelines are intended for consistency, but usefulness to the reader is the principal goal. So ignore these guidelines if you have a good reason.

I felt I had a good reason... SiGarb 16:12, 16 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your swift reply. I take your point, but still feel my page serves a useful purpose. If it merely redirected to the correct spelling without comment, many people would not even notice that they had been redirected, They probably don't look that carefully at the spelling, and even when they do, they continue to mispronounce the word, because they think that's how it's pronounced. If you feel like doing a disambig for Anemone, fair enough, but I can't: I don't have admin status, and it would involve changing the current Anemone to Anemone (plant) (which would probably get up a few noses!) SiGarb 16:48, 16 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry; yes, I'd forgotten about the "Move" button. But it's still something I wouldn't like to do without wider discussion. It probably doesn't amount to "a drastic and unexpected change for a popular page" (to quote the "Move" page) but it still seems a bit extreme. Would Anemone (disambiguation) mop up all Anemone links, or redirects made to it, or searches on "anemone", or all of the above? SiGarb 17:12, 16 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Whouk, today you observed that someone left a message under the name "NP Chilla" in the Doctor Who Wikiproject, without logging in as me. That is because he was not me, and could, for all I know, have written other things in various talk pages under my name. I should investigate this further...

But what I really want to say is -- thank you. Thank you very much for being caring enough to point this out. It is always reassuring to know someone is watching out for me. I am extremely grateful to you for this. NP Chilla 16:54, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

hello

[edit]

Thank you for your comment regarding the Colin Carmichael VfD. There is a section in that page about Xelha F.C. but no separate page yet. Sorry about that, especially as it seems that the Carmichael page is well on its way to deletion. I think that is a pity, because I believe it gives a quite interesting insight into current expatriate life in Japan (albeit in "the provinces" as one voter has rather snootily observed!). Also people are pretty quick on the draw with ordering up VfDs etc. and it is a wonder that any new material ever makes it into the wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Rowan_Cavanagh —Preceding unsigned comment added by W33nie (talkcontribs)

My general rule is that the more transparent the lie, the greater the insult to my intelligence -- and Historian is very transparent indeed in his vanity campaign. Intellectual dishonesty, disingenuousness, arrogance, smarminess, passive-aggressive and outright insults, and obvious dodges to simple queries also make my list of annoying editor traits, and his clumsy veiled threat on the CfD page was simply icing on the cake in inflaming my annoyance. Trying to get him to make the merest nod to reality seems to be pointless -- whatever his motivation, it's meaningless, since Vanity Biography #27,883 is going the way of all of its predecessors (been there, done that, have a CLOSET full of t-shirts).

But your attempt at balance in your message is wrong: it's not bickering, it's a battle of wits with the unarmed, and my use of heavy artillery against the defenseless is unsporting under the circumstances. Enough is enough. --Calton | Talk 11:58, 7 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Whew! I can certainly agree with the very last sentence. Thanks for your effort to mediate, Whouk. (Which Dr Who did you like best by the way?) --Historian 23:55, 8 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for taking the time to vote in my RfA, and for welcoming me to the fold of administrators. I'll do my level best to use the mop and bucket — or, as I said in my RfA, plunger — responsibly. Of course, in the best tradition of politicans everywhere, I've already broken a campaign promise and blocked a vandal (after I said "I don't anticipate using the blocking tool very often"). Nevertheless, I'll try not to let the unbridled power corrupt me. —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 14:56, 14 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

See Wikipedia:Manual of Style (dates and numbers). This is to allow date preferences to work. If you set them you will see 11 September and September 11 ([[11 September]] and [[September 11]]) the same way. Rgds. Rich Farmbrough. 12:38, 15 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
PS WP:Dates does not exist. RF. PPS Re-reading your note, perhaps it's not clear in the MoS that years alone should rarely be linked, years with a date and month should almst alwats be linked. Key exception, quotes. Rich Farmbrough. 12:38, 15 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Andreas Katsulas

[edit]

Please do not remove the memorial video for Andreas again. It is not a "non-notable" fan production. I worked on Babylon 5, creating music videos for Joe Straczynski, and he asked me to put this online. I did the same for Rick Biggs two years ago, and this will be played at Andreas' memorial service. TheRealFennShysa 21:00, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As a general rule it's probably not a good idea to add links to your own stuff, though, just as the subjects of articles are advised not to edit articles about themselves - Normally, I wouldn't - I've not written a page *about* me, even though there's a link for me on this page... However, this is something we're trying to share with the fans, getting the word out to as many places as we can, so I figured no one would mind, given the circumstances....
