Heads up on donkeys

[edit]

Just a heads up that after a long and contentious editing dispute, it was agreed that it does appear that most donkeys aren't measured in hands. Which is odd, but I dug into it and I had to acknowledge that even in the US, they seem most often to be measured in inches -- and it was a heckuva bad editing dispute in general (the entire horse hands template was brought into play. It was one of those "I almost quit over it" messes). Anyway, just letting you know that the donkey articles are kind of special...  ;-) Montanabw(talk) 23:32, 1 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Montanabw Well that's something else new learned for me. Horsegeek(talk) 23:23, 3 November 2016 (UTC)Horsegeek[reply]
Trust me, I never want to go through a nightmare like this and this again. Luckily, no one was blocked, and both editors are still editing, but that may have been the closest I ever came to throwing in the towel and quitting WP altogether. As a result, there are a few "third rails" that are approached only with great caution. One of which is that we don't use the hands template for donkeys. I do not fully agree with it, but it is a compromise that has kept the peace now for about five years. That said, there are still some hard feelings out there. Unfortunately, they are mutual. I just don't have the energy to poke the bear. (Sigh) Montanabw(talk) 04:11, 4 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I guess it's like the Mini horse people insist on measuring their little fuzzballs at the end of the mane, as opposed to the top of the withers. (Am I the only person who has realized that makes them seem smaller by knocking off an inch or two?) White Arabian Filly Neigh 21:20, 4 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Or it would knock off an inch or so if they had withers... may just be that they can't find the withers... LOL! Montanabw(talk) 07:48, 5 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Dunn

[edit]

Saw you were getting trolled on the Bud Dunn article. I always check the contribs of folks who do that, and when they've been editing less than a month, you know there is someone with issues-- and probably a blocked editor trying to evade a block. Best to just remember WP:DFTT (like I do... or not... hah!) Feel free to post on my talk page the next time that happens. If I'm not around, my page stalkers will be. By the way, for a TFA, you survived pretty well - just the usual vandals and only two trolls! Montanabw(talk) 06:27, 2 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I have seen that happen to other TFAs and it's always somebody who has no FA experience or even content creation experience. Most of them only have a couple of edits, period. It's pretty ridiculous. White Arabian Filly Neigh 20:49, 2 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Been a while

[edit]

I haven't been editing on Wikipedia for a while now! Just came back for a few check ups or two, but my English seems to have gotten better. I'm pretty sure this is confusing, but did you know you met me when I was still in elementary? Probably not surprising. Happy late Halloween, and I hope to work with you and some others more on Wikipedia in the future. Horsegeek(talk) 02:43, 3 November 2016 (UTC)Horsegeek[reply]

Hi Horsegeek, glad to see you back! I knew you had talked about school, but didn't know it was that. I hope you had a good Halloween; I celebrated the way I always do, by buying those big bags of candy the next day when they go on sale! Hopefully you will be doing more editing, we have a lot of horsey stuff that needs work or expansion. White Arabian Filly Neigh 20:01, 3 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, found a lot of things lately that's been distracting me. I took programming classes and got hooked. Might want to do that kind of thing later. I've also started writing a book I'm hoping to publish in the future, except for the problem I don't know how. Language Arts class is helping me a lot with my English. Wrote a 4-5 page narrative, and got a 98/100 score. That makes me confident that my writing's decent.

Also, that's great! Handing out candy to the little kids is great fun. Except for when it gets late, and the big kids come. Have to turn off the lights after that. I do hope to be able to edit more. Currently, I'm trying to get my draft of the Hequ Horse live. Been getting some help on that. Meanwhile, I probably will look around for some more horsey articles to edit. ;) Horsegeek(talk) 23:21, 3 November 2016 (UTC)Horsegeek[reply]

I have several languishing drafts in my sandboxes and you are welcome to go play in there any time! Some that need help include:

We also have some kickass women race horse trainers in redlinks:

Just some ideas... I think I'll cross-post this list on my own talk page, actually. Montanabw(talk) 04:45, 4 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I'll try to help with those. I went through a period of not editing much because I had a bad resporitory infection that lasted 2 weeks, and in the middle of it my grandfather died of old age (he was in his 90s). Now I have more time, and I'm trying to get some of my own sandboxed drafts into mainspace. There's also some additional stuff I'm looking into writing. Asking for some help

[edit]

Hi! Pretty sure I am in the right place. I saw you responded to my question and linked the Dead End Pages, could you give me a couple of pointers on how I could help? You seem to know a lot. Thanks TwistedByFate (talk) 19:55, 6 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again TwistedByFate. If you mean help in the dead end pages, just put double brackets around whatever you think has an article. Almost all towns have articles, which can be linked like this: [[Nashville, Tennessee]]. People articles can be tougher because they are disambiguated by adding "singer", "actor", or whatever in parentheses after the name. To link to an actor named John Smith and make sure the link goes to the right page, type [[John Smith (actor)|John Smith]].
If you're interested in editing any specific topics, I'd suggest you look at the Wikipedia:WikiProject Directory. There's a project for pretty much every interest, and most will have a list of articles that need to be worked on. White Arabian Filly Neigh 20:55, 7 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thank you for the help! TwistedByFate (talk) 21:00, 7 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

New Page Reviewer granted

[edit]

Hello White Arabian Filly. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group, allowing you to review new pages and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or in some cases, tag them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is a vital function for policing the quality of the encylopedia, if you have not already done so, you must read the new tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the various deletion criteria. If you need more help or wish to discuss the process, please join or start a thread at page reviewer talk.

  • Be nice to new users - they are often not aware of doing anything wrong.
  • You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted - be formal and polite in your approach to them too, even if they are not.
  • Don't review a page if you are not sure what to do. Just leave it for another reviewer.
  • Remember that quality is quintessential to good patrolling. Take your time to patrol each article, there is no rush. Use the message feature and offer basic advice.

The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In case of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, the right can be revoked at any time by an administrator. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 23:51, 20 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Another kitten for you!

[edit]

Congratulations on your new cat! Enjoy! I just got another one myself about 3 months ago.

BilCat (talk) 21:48, 21 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, BilCat! I have had cats most of my life (you pretty much have to have them on a farm or else get overrun by rats), except that I've been without since my last one died about a year and a half ago. I found this one via the Internet; he's about three months old and is gray with white feet. White Arabian Filly Neigh 23:55, 21 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I understand. My new one is all black, and about 10-12 months old. We're not sure of her age, she came from another home, where she wasn't well-taken care of. I think she has breathing issues, as she seemed to be having trouble with all the smoke from the wildfires in our area. - BilCat (talk) 00:38, 22 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Mine came from a trailer park (the kid brought him home without asking, and her aunt got him, but then the aunt's cat started beating him up) but he is healthy and they seem to have taken good care care of him. There are a couple of wildfires in my state too, although they are small and mostly contained. Last week we were smothered in smoke from the big fires over in Georgia, though. White Arabian Filly Neigh 16:48, 22 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, we had smoke from those fires too. It was pretty bad for awhile. Thank God the smoke's let up. My older cat doesn't get along well with the new one, so they have to timeshare my bed! - BilCat (talk) 13:50, 23 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I just ran across Farm cat. It needs a lot of citations, but cat sources aren't something I've dealt with much. - BilCat (talk) 13:52, 23 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The gobble is one of the principal vocalizations of the male wild turkey and is used primarily in the spring to let hens know he is in the area." Happy Thanksgiving! New Page Review - newsletter

[edit]
Hello White Arabian Filly,
Breaking the back of the backlog
We now have 803 New Page Reviewers! Most of you requested the user right to be able to do something about the huge backlog. Now it's time for action.
Mid July to 01 Oct 2016

If each reviewer does only 10 reviews a day over five days, the backlog will be down to zero and the daily input can then be processed by each reviewer doing only 2 or 3 reviews a day - that's about 5 minutes work!
Let's get that over and done with in time to relax for the holidays.

Second set of eyes

Not only are New Page Reviewers the guardians of quality of new articles, they are also in a position to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged for deletion and maintenance and that new authors are not being bitten. This is an important feature of your work. Read about it at the new Monitoring the system section in the tutorial.

Getting the tools we need - 2016 WMF Wishlist Survey: Please vote

With some tweaks to their look, and some additional features, Page Curation and New Pages Feed could easily be the best tools for patrollers and reviewers. We've listed most of what what we need at the 2016 WMF Wishlist Survey. Voting starts on 28 November - please turn out to make our bid the Foundation's top priority. Please help also by improving or commenting on our Wishlist entry at the Community Wishlist Survey. Many other important user suggestions are listed at at Page Curation.
