Responding
[edit]Hi White Arabian Filly,
First, let me compliment you on your choice of horses! I myself have a black Arabian filly (well, mare). As I mentioned in an earlier post, this is my first Wikipedia edit so I'm sure I'm not getting it done as well as an experienced Wikipedia-er (Wikipedia-ite? ... or ...?). It's been a frustrating experience.
So far, I've donated several hours adding to the page -- only to have just about every last shred of it deleted en masse. (I reread my earlier material and I agree that some of it may have inadvertently reflected my strong pro-PHN sentiment but that was maybe 10% that could easily have been *edited* out.) A host of relevant information was swept up in that purge.
I was apparently accused of copyright infringement, which is absurd, given that I was typing the material in without the use of anything but what was in my head (and only the most basic elements of it at that). And, no, that doesn't make it original research, just a condensation of the basics of PNH.
I was accused of edit warring or something like that for reverting others' changes. I didn't do that, either -- not even once, let alone three times.
Finally, there is one bland laudatory sentence that's so far been permitted. That is then followed by seven *paragraphs* of assorted unpleasantness.
In short, in its attempt not to be an "advertisement," -- and, thus, deleting almost everything positive -- the page has devolved into mostly a smear piece. And...you probably know this...there are tens if not hundreds of thousands of PNH students who *adore* the program. I am one of them.
So, where's the balance?
Anyway, please do not take this small rant to be directed at you. I sincerely appreciate that you took the time to answer my questions earlier. I see that you've made some modifications, too, although I still haven't quite figured out how to follow who changed what and why. But I have so far found this experience to be nothing but throwing my effort -- based on a decade of serious study of PNH -- down the drain.

(talk page stalker)I think it's best we all discuss your editing at your talk page, Jackie, there are rules for editing wikipedia and the Five pillars are the starting point; they are the absolute gotta-follow rules, the most relevant of which is neutral point of view and to not violate copyright. Hello. Thank you for paying attention to Summerfield Johnston, Jr.. Could you please remove the unreferenced info which User:Rickylido added twice? I removed it twice and don't want to do it a third time to stay on the safe side. I left a note on their talkpage, but they ignored it. I think this requires a bold edit, removing the alleged first wife and daughter. If he or you can find a reference for it, that's fine, but I am concerned that this may be a total lie. Better stick to the references.Zigzig20s (talk) 21:12, 3 January 2016 (UTC)
- Zigzig20s I'll go do it now. I don't know if there's any reference for that but I can look later on Google Books or news. White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 21:15, 3 January 2016 (UTC)
- Thank you. Also, the references I added only said "Will Johnston", not "Will Lasater (Thornton) Johnston". Could you please trim that as well?Zigzig20s (talk) 21:22, 3 January 2016 (UTC)
Hi again. Would you be interested in helping me work on an article about Clarence Scharbauer, Jr., horsebreeder and son of rancher Clarence Scharbauer please? I added a bit about him in his father's "death and legacy" section, and I think he could have his own page. Thank you.Zigzig20s (talk) 21:24, 3 January 2016 (UTC)
- @Zigzig20s: Sure, I'd help with that. You want to create it, or me? White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 22:26, 3 January 2016 (UTC)
- I think you could start as I am trying to finish a couple of articles right now. You could use the obituary I referenced and perhaps this, and more... Thank you.Zigzig20s (talk) 22:31, 3 January 2016 (UTC)
- OK, will get right to it. White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 22:34, 3 January 2016 (UTC)

- I ended up in-lining them all except for one which won't load. It's about his father-in-law. Who was he?Zigzig20s (talk) 00:46, 4 January 2016 (UTC)
- I fixed it and added his name, which was Fred Turner, and the horse he owned, which was Tomy Lee. White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 02:00, 4 January 2016 (UTC)
- There's a glitch (have a look). Was Fred Turner notable? The only Turner I know in Texas is the president of SMU.Zigzig20s (talk) 02:12, 4 January 2016 (UTC)
- Oops. I don't know if he was notable or not, although I think the source said he was a multimillionaire. He's redlinked at the horse's article. White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 02:15, 4 January 2016 (UTC)
- Probably. I also think his great-uncle, John Scharbauer, should have an article.Zigzig20s (talk) 03:03, 4 January 2016 (UTC)
- Feel free to create an article about Turner if you can find enough references. Btw, Valor Farm might be notable. Not only for its abundance of oil (see his article), but also this. And you are in luck, because it looks like it's for sale, if you have a cool 16-17 million lying around.... Here's your ranch! I expect to be invited over for some riding if you do make the right decision and purchase it. Haha.Zigzig20s (talk) 12:22, 4 January 2016 (UTC)

Citations
[edit]Only recently (after YEARS of editing Wikipedia) have I realized that using the "citation templates" in the corner makes it much easier to reference everything. It also removes bare URLs right away. It saves a lot of time, rather than changing the references later. Why aren't you doing it?Zigzig20s (talk) 20:12, 4 January 2016 (UTC)
- On mobile view it's not there, and I have trouble seeing the typewriterish font on desktop where it is, especially on a small phone screen. I will go back and refill the refs later; sometimes I'm in a hurry and it's easier to fill in the template later than to not use the refs and get yelled at for not using refs! White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 20:19, 4 January 2016 (UTC)
- @Zigzig20s: for someone like WAF, an even better option is to insert bare URLs between ref tags and then run reFill, which does the cite template for us: OR any of us can if she sets it up that way. If you do any formatting at all, reFill doesn't work properly. I even use it and I can access the citation templates; when I'm creating an article with a lot of refs, it's much faster (though using the templates is often better when I am adding a single new source to an article that needs a specific format. Help!
[edit]Did a fast stub creation for Clinton Anderson (horse trainer) to keep a disambiguation page in place instead of fighting redirects to that of a dead politician. But it's a stub and I don't really have the time/energy/interest to really flesh it out... do you want to dig up a couple sources and a wee more text just to make it a good anchor? We don't need tons, just a few more paragraphs. Call it part of the Road to the Horse project. Montanabw(talk) 01:00, 6 January 2016 (UTC)
- I'll go check out Google books. White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 01:29, 6 January 2016 (UTC)
DYK for The Talk of the Town (horse)
[edit]On 10 January 2016, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article The Talk of the Town (horse), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that The Talk of the Town was the first Tennessee Walking Horse to win three World Grand Championships, and one of only two horses ever to do so? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/The Talk of the Town (horse). You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page. |

[edit]Be careful on the Wild Horses and Burro Act... remember my horrible RfA? Yep... Montanabw(talk) 00:38, 11 January 2016 (UTC)
- I'm not planning to edit it regularly. I just fixed a typo: changed "maverik" to "maverick". If I wanted to be obnoxious though, I could go in and say I'm an expert because I own the halfbred (sire was a Paint or Quarter Horse) son of a BLM mare. Ha! White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 00:44, 11 January 2016 (UTC)
- Feel free to make constructive edits, WAF. I don't own the article, I just want it to be decent. Lynn (SLW) (talk) 03:03, 11 January 2016 (UTC)
- WAF can edit all she wants, Lynn, she has earned my trust and respect; I am proud to collaborate with her and she is doing a great job of becoming a wikipedian. It's you that has not learned about collaboration and sourcing on wikipedia. Your POV-pushing is a serious problem, and your penchant for poor research and inadequate sourcing has even been criticized over at wikipediocracy, which takes some doing. Montanabw(talk) 03:09, 11 January 2016 (UTC)

- Oh, and as you can see, Lynn also stalks my edits. Montanabw(talk) 03:10, 11 January 2016 (UTC)
- Or, maybe I came over to see how WAF felt about your reverting both our edits. Lynn (SLW) (talk) 11:27, 11 January 2016 (UTC)
- I don't care about the minor reversion. I can't even find the typo I had fixed on the current version of the page. White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 20:58, 11 January 2016 (UTC)

- Looks like they could use one of these. My first trainer had one he kept as a curiosity, but I can see where it could be really handy for therapy purposes. White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 19:06, 16 January 2016 (UTC)
- Ouch! My horse's back hurts just looking at that! (Actually, PATH has banned riding double at their centers for safety reasons). Montanabw(talk) 03:23, 18 January 2016 (UTC)
- Ha, my horse would probably faint and keel over the second it was placed on him! He thinks it's funny to heave a huge sigh every time I get off him, like I'm squishing him to death. (I weigh several pounds LESS than I'm supposed to--from sweating it off taking care of him and the rest of the critters when it's 95 degrees in the summer, no doubt.) JMO - GA
[edit]Just my opinion, but I think you should consider taking the best of your TWN foundation sire articles (perhaps Midnight Sun) to GA. Still needs some work, and I can help you with stuff your phone editing can't do (just ask me or ask at the article talk page) but I think they are really quite close. User:Ealdgyth has several Quarter Horse "biographies" at GA and FA-class, and you can use some of hers as a good guide (example of GA ones: Poco Pine, Garrett's Miss Pawhuska). The trickiest thing you will be up against is using as few non-commercial sources as possible. (The registry is usually a decent RS for individual animal history; if you go far enough back, we can use stuff from the Hathi Trust as sources.) Montanabw(talk) 23:05, 22 January 2016 (UTC)
- Ha, thanks, I was considering asking that (especially about Midnight Sun, since he's still revered as a sire and show horse)! I can probably find a little more from Hathi and others to expand the article first though. 😊 I was thinking about it last night when I was adding to it... White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 23:09, 22 January 2016 (UTC)
Thanks
[edit]Hey White Arabian, thanks for inviting me to the horse equine! I have been studying horses for like, all my life and have played a horse game for 2 years!
- You're welcome, Horsegeek. If you want to start editing a lot of horse articles you can look at the WP:WikiProject Equine/Assessment page. Anything that is start or stub class can be expanded and lots of them need copy-editing to make them more readable. On articles that have reached good or featured status you can propose changes on the talk pages first. White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 21:54, 24 January 2016 (UTC)
References
[edit]So, what is a reference in general?
Horsegeek (talk) 23:22, 24 January 2016 (UTC)HorsegeekHorsegeek (talk) 23:22, 24 January 2016 (UTC)
- A reference is a specific part/page/section of a book, website, newspaper, magazine or other kind of publication that you use to back up what you write in an article here. All content is supposed to be referenced and unreferenced stuff can be removed at any time. References should also be fairly reliable in nature; i.e., no tabloids or self-published books, but mainstream newspapers and books put out by real publishers. For websites, those like magazine sites tend to be good, but forums or user-generated sites are typically not acceptable. There are cite templates that come up on the bottom of the edit windows you can use, or you can use the bare url between ref tags like this: <ref>www.website.com/pagename</ref>. Always be careful to write new content in your own words, though, and not copy word for word from a source. People who copy-paste stuff tend to be dealt with very roughly, since that's almost always a copyright violation. The exception is short quotes and stuff that's so old it's in the public domain. There's a whole instruction page here. White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 00:29, 25 January 2016 (UTC)

Refill?
[edit]Have you tried to see if you can run reFill from your mobile? It would be cool if you can, because it will do up the citation templates for many (though not all) raw URLs. Even those of us who don't edit from a phone often just do raw urls and then run reFill on them. (As you may have noticed) Montanabw(talk) 23:10, 31 January 2016 (UTC)
- I tried and it wouldn't even come up. I can remember the cite web template and type it in from memory, but I can't remember the cite book and other templates. My phone is weird. 😛 White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 00:07, 1 February 2016 (UTC)
- Hm. You might make a note of that at User:Zhaofeng Li/reFill, if they don't have advice on how you can make it load, then it's a glitch they should fix; many people edit via mobile phones and the templates are a total PITA without access to either the citation templates or some form of automation. Montanabw(talk) 01:10, 1 February 2016 (UTC)
- It worked just then! I filled in the refs on a draft in case it went wrong, but it worked. No idea why it wouldn't earlier, but it did just now. White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 02:08, 1 February 2016 (UTC)
