Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. Thanks for your edits to the above page. You are correct that when a driver 'leaves' a particular race (for whatever reason) this is commonly referred to as retiring (from the race). It should not be confused with leaving (retiring from) the sport altogether. It is a convenient shorthand and is used in most, if not all, coverage of the sport (TV, newspapers, magazines, etc.). See also the results tables in motorsport articles where the abbreviation "Ret" is used to denote failing to finish a race.
