Re: Protection on the Prop 8 article

I saw and responded to your note over at Talk:California_Proposition_8_(2008)#Request_Protection, and figured I'd drop you a line. I explained there why proptecting the Prop 8 article probably won't happen until and unless a new cluster of vandalism occurs after the last protection expired 15 July--there's a balance in article protection between the hassle of allowing users to edit through protection on one hand, and keeping down the vandalism on the other. We get a suprising number of useful edits from anonymous editors, and there's a community spirit that wants to keep as much of the encyclopedia open "for anyone" to edit as possible. Tricky.

You mentioned it being a fuss to request page protection, it's really not that bad, even for a self-described noob--here's a quick explaination if you're interested--and don't worry about it if you aren't.  :)

Rougly speaking, what you'd do is go to WP:RFPP, hit edit on the section marked "Current requests for protection", add your request. The format is descibed earlier in the WP:RFPP page, but if you just open for edit that section (don't worry, you won't break it if you don't save), you can probably figure out the format. Do read the instructions though, and some of the supporting material, maybe even some of other requests there that have been answered, and you'll quickly kinda get a sense of the procedure, and what will and won't work in terms of getting an article protected. Feel free to drop me a note at User Talk:Joe Decker if I can explain any of this further... :)

One final note, on talk pages, don't forget to "sign" your edits by adding two dashes and four tildes after what you wrote, there's a pencil icon (fifth from left) that will add that in a single press. Problem with your custom signature

You have a custom signature set in your account preferences. A change to Wikipedia's software has made your current custom signature incompatible with the software.

The problem: Your preferences are set to interpret your custom signature as wikitext. However, your current custom signature does not contain any wikitext.

The solutions: You can reset your signature to the default, or you can fix your signature.

Solution 1: Reset your signature to the default:

1. Find the signature section in the first tab of Special:Preferences.
2. Uncheck the box (☑︎→☐) that says "Treat the above as wiki markup."
3. Remove anything in the Signature: text box. (It might already be empty.)
4. Click the blue "Save" button at the bottom of the page. (The red "Restore all default settings" button will reset all of your preference settings, not just the signature.)

Solution 2: Fix your custom signature:

1. Find the signature section in the first tab of Special:Preferences.
2. Uncheck the box (☑︎→☐) that says "Treat the above as wiki markup."
3. Click the blue "Save" button at the bottom of the page.
