Request for help, Emo Rap

[edit]

Would you help with a dispute in emo rap? The dispute is evident on the talk page: Talk:Emo_rap#Revert_05:31.2C_26_March_2007. User:Xcryoftheafflictedx has proven difficult to work with. Viewing the recent edit history going back to 05:31, 26 March 2007 would be helpful in getting an idea of what has been going on. The dispute is that I would like to preserve some of the content (the opening paragraph), and the structure of the entry (espicially the itemized criticism section). This is taking the from of a revert war between myself and this other user. This user is pushing POV, and has a higer regard for their writing abilities than appears justified. Actually, looking at the user's talk page it seems that he has a history of acting unilaterally, and being difficult to work with: User_talk:Xcryoftheafflictedx Thanks in advance. Unnecessary fixing of redirects

[edit]

Hello, I noticed you were fixing a few links to redirects lately (specifically, the one I saw was on Dick Cheney, piping in myocardial infarction to heart attack. Heart attack redirects to myocardial infarction. As counter-intuitive as this may seem, editing a page just to fix redirects actually costs the server more resources than it provides. To quote from Wikipedia:Tools/Navigation popups/About fixing redirects: "In other words, readers of Wikipedia would have to use a redirect link about 10,000 times before it would be worthwhile to replace that link with a direct link." Of course, if you're editing an article anyway, then it's worthwhile to fix the links. Just wanted to give you a heads-up. --YbborTalkSurvey! 15:51, 7 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

 • "worthwhile" is a very subjective term. personally i fundamentally disagree with the idea that any form of article improvement (which, i'm sorry, redirect piping unequivocally is) should be discouraged on economic grounds. it'd also probably be cheaper not to add in any missing full stops we see, and to leave any typos the way they are, and to stop writing anything on talk pages, too, and to stop anyone from having userpages (those edits cost money!!) but those things'd be shite, for obvious reasons.
in any case, i donated a bundle o'bucks last year, which should cover many, many times over the amount of fussy minor edits it takes to make sure myocardial infarction is linked up correctly. W guice 18:07, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Edits on VT page

[edit]

Hey! I've been really impressed with your edits on the VT shooting page, and I agree entirely with your user page comments about the paper version of Wikipedia and the foolishness of Godwin's ramblings.

Don't worry - I'm not so arrogant that I feel the need to go round patting people on the head when I see they've done something good, but I know good behaviour often goes unthanked on Wikipedia, so thought I'd say hi and thanks for your efforts on the VT discussion page. Fair use rationale for Image:PiL9.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:PiL9.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. (ESkog)(Talk) 20:42, 2 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, W guice. An automated process has found and removed an image or media file tagged as nonfree media, and thus is being used under fair use that was in your userspace. The image (Image:TwangKikOff.jpg) was found at the following location: User:W guice/sandbox. This image or media was attempted to be removed per criterion number 9 of our non-free content policy. The image or media was replaced with Image:NonFreeImageRemoved.svg , so your formatting of your userpage should be fine. Please find a free image or media to replace it with, and or remove the image from your userspace. User:Gnome (Bot)-talk 10:20, 14 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I thought you were the one who originally posted the death of Peter Hayes the lawyer. Yes, I am just wondering if this really is a notable person. I agree with you though that it should just be left ... for the time being. Tom M. 18:34, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Tom M asked me for an opinion about the notability of this person. I'm biassed as I wrote the start of the Wiki article. Let me just say that it is huge news in Australia - one of the country's leading lawyers liaising with multiple prostitutes and overdosing on an injection given by one of them. I think it's best to leave things as they are for now. I'm sure there is more to come ... WWGB 02:58, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unspecified source for Image:AesRockFastCars.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:AesRockFastCars.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the GFDL-self tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 15:57, 31 May 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 15:57, 31 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

date formats

[edit]

I noticed that your changed the birth and death dates in Happy Chandler from mmmmm dd, yyyy format to yyyy-mm-dd format. I am not sure why you did that. Sure users who have set their date preferences will see it whatever format they prefer, but many logged in users have no date preferences set. Besides, none of the IP/not logged in users, most of whom are here to just read our articles have date preferences set. Most articles about US & Canada topics should have dates formatted in mmmmm dd, yyyy format and others should be formatted in the European/International format dd mmmmm yyyy. --rogerd 00:58, 2 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 08:20, 6 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Genre's aren't capitalized?

[edit]

Sorry, but where does it say they aren't capitalized? I mean, if it were "Black metal", you obviously wouldn't capitalize the "metal" part, only the first part, but I'm pretty sure it's a recurring theme across Wikipedia to capitalize at least the first letter in the boxes - here are a few examples from differing genres. ≈ The Haunted Angel 16:09, 6 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion

[edit]

Please note that if an admin removes a speedy delete tag it should not be re-added. If you want to discuss it, use talk. Mallanox 12:14, 8 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If "reverting was even less necessary", then surely edit warring by reverting my reversion was even less necessary than that? And guidelines are meant to be followed, not ignored. Croctotheface 09:47, 11 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The logic of your comment on my talk page only makes sense if you believe that WP:REDIRECT advocates keeping the encyclopedia "less right" than it could be. I believe that our content guidelines should be taken very seriously. I am in favor of discouraging edits such as the one you made, but I do not believe that edit warring is an appropriate response in any situation. If, by your reply, I can assume that you intend to continue to make edits such as the one in question, then I would encourage you to take the issue up at WP:REDIRECT and attempt to get the guideline changed. Again, guidelines are meant to be followed, not ignored. Croctotheface 10:02, 11 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

you nailed it in your first sentence, yes. i do believe that WP:REDIRECT advocates keeping the encyclopedia "less right" than it could be. getting to an article directly is always more correct than being redirected there via an incorrect softlink. you might not find the degree of difference appreciable, but that's still a fact. deal deal deal tomasz. 12:49, 20 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I've removed the db-band tag you put on the article Die Kassierer. Please use this tag only in cases where there is no claim of notability. This band's career (or so the article claims) spans 20 years with 12 albums. Clearly, this is not a case for speedy deletion. Feel free to go to AfD. Thanks, Pascal.Tesson 13:15, 11 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't suppose you read criterion 5 of the guideline which states Has released two or more albums on a major label or one of the more important indie labels (i.e. an independent label with a history of more than a few years and a roster of performers, many of which are notable). The article also mentioned their feud with Bundesprüfstelle für jugendgefärdende Schriften and I suppose you did not bother with even the most basic of Google searches [1] that easily demonstrates that there are plenty of references about this band and would have led you to the German Wikipedia article. Please use the speedy deletion tags carefully. Incorrect deletions of perfectly reasonable are always infuriating to editors who have spent time building the article. When in doubt, you can always send an article for AfD which of course is a little bit more work but in this case, this was clearly the way to go. Even though the music guideline does not explicitly say "punk bands with a twenty year history are always notable", common sense dictates that unless you're an expert on German punk, you probably are not the best judge of the article's value. Wikipedia Questions

[edit]

Hi,

I am an Assistant Professor of Information Systems at Boston College, and I am researching the development of the Wikipedia article on the Virginia Tech Massacre. You were among the top 2% of editors for that article, and I was wondering if you’d be willing to answer a few questions by email. Please also indicate at the bottom if you’d be willing to participate in a short follow-up phone/Skype interview as well.

All of your responses and your participation will be confidential. Please cut and paste the below questions and respond by email to gerald.kane@bc.edu to ensure confidentiality.

I appreciate your help on this project, and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. Please also let me know if you are interested in receiving a copy of the paper when it is finished.

Thank You, Gerald C (Jerry) Kane, Ph.D. Assistant Professor of Information Systems Carroll School of Management Boston College 140 Commonwealth Ave 326 Fulton Hall Chestnut Hill, MA 02478

[edit]

Hello. 3RR on The King's School, Chester. Please use the talk page. Thanks. -- zzuuzz (talk) 12:40, 20 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I fear I may have inadvertently given fuel to the writer of the unencyclopedic sections when giving a rather borderline article the benefit of the doubt as B-class. Sorry! I've added some review comments to the talk page which should hopefully be of benefit. I think with a situation like this where someone just keeps on adding unencyclopedic material even when you remove it, repeated reversion unfortunately tends only to strengthen their determination to get the material included. The best thing to do here is probably to go to the talk page and try to bash out a compromise there. Some material in the disputed section could probably be included if pruned and rewritten as prose. You might find that WikiProject Schools is of more assistance than WikiProject Cheshire, as they should know what information is generally considered encyclopedic when writing about schools. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Goodbye To The Island is a redirect to a non-existent page (CSD R1).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Goodbye To The Island, please affix the template hangon to the page, and put a note on its talk page. Orphaned non-free media (Image:CCCCBon.jpg)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:CCCCBon.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a redirect to a nonexistent page. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. If you plan to expand the article, you can request that administrators wait a while for you to add contextual material. To do this, affix the template hangon to the page and state your intention on the article's talk page. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Cardamon (band)

[edit]

I noticed a tag for speedy deletion has been placed by you on the page of the band Cardamon. Apparently because "It is an article about a band, singer, musician, or musical ensemble that does not assert the importance or significance of the subject." I suppose that means it is doubted whether this band actually exists and is a relevant active act. I'm not sure why that could be disputed, because a quick look at their official website and MySpace profile (links to both of which are on the page) will convince any person of the contrary. Secondly, I am the band's drummer's older brother and can therefore personally testify for the band's existence and relevance. Hereby a request to contact me with a more specific reason for the tag and/or if you're meanwhile convinced the tag was put there unnecessarily, please remove it. Thank you.
EDIT: I meanwhile understand a bit more why you may possibly have added the tag. Cardamon is a relatively new and upcoming band. They have one full-length album finished for which they are now in search of a label to release it. An independent review of the album can be read here: http://www.metalstorm.ee/pub/review.php?review_id=4630. Also they have already made several appearances on Dutch stages. Their line-up features members (Thomas Kalksma and Koen Romeijn) of the 'relevant' band called Detonation. —Preceding unsigned comment added by MadTinus (talkcontribs) 18:42, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Drone Download Project

[edit]

To be notable, the fact that the Drone Download Project, over the past four years plus current fifth year, has released tracks by dozens of artists with Wikipedia entry makes it noteworthy. First, if so many of the musicians have Wikipedia entries, then obviously a project where they release 1-2 tracks per year is noteworthy - it also goes without saying that if a band like Rush can have an entry for every single song they've every written, not just for the 19 LPs/CDs they've released, a genre like drone/ambient should be given the same consideration despite the vastly smaller audience.

Reading through the guidelines, the DDP is a series of on-going releases and as said, about 20-25% of the artists who have released tracks for it, including Numina, Steve Roach, Robert Rich, and many others with Wikipedia entries, does qualify it as noteworthy. To delete the entry would remove a reference to all of these already "noteworthy" artists' releases. QED. Thanks! Cheers, Wink

Apologies if the tone of our message about this seemed snarky, it was not personal, we are just confused why an article on a series of on-going ambient/drone compilations would not be noteworthy, but moreso we are confused why you would delete it saying it was about a "company or corporation" when it is about, well, a "project"? We are very sorry if our note came across badly, we can see how that could be, and it was honestly not our intention.  :( Our sincere apologies, Austere Austere 03:44, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi and Very Sorry?

[edit]

Hi - you left us a note about "oneupmanship" and editing your user page - did you mean to send it to us? We are not Wikipedia experts, quite the contrary, but we thought that adding comments very the "User Talk" page was the correct way to have a discussion? We are simply doing what an Admin said we should do. As far as "oneupmanship", we are truly confused, both because you don't mention what article(s) you would be referring to, and although you might not believe us, "one..." is the last thing we would ever be interested in doing. We have released music as a duo for almost a decade anonymously, so that should give you an idea of what little ego we have in these things. In any case, we hope we're doing this correctly this time, we've very, truly sorry if you felt that we had insulted or in any way offended you, and if we knew what in particular we'd done, we would appreciate it so we can avoid it in the future. Please do accept our apology and if you can help us avoid causing you any ill feelings in the future, we would welcome the more specific feedback. Sincerely yours, Austere —Preceding unsigned comment added by Austere (talkcontribs) 03:41, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed the article has a section titled "Production Techniques / Technologies" when it should be "Production techniques and technologies". Since you appear to be active, can you fix it? Just64helpin 12:13, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, sorry?

[edit]

Hey, you left a note for me on a discussion page Talk:Chandralekha Perera invoking wp:sofixit. While I appreciate your suggestion, my lack of action was not due to laziness but ignorance. Although this might sound stupid to one as accomplished and experienced as yourself, I'm not entirely sure how to edit the actual titles of articles. Let me know and next time, I'll fix it.
