Consensus: Puerto Rican Spindalis

[edit]

Hola Vizcarra, I would like you to participate in the following: An organized consensus in regard to the Puerto Rican Spindalis has been placed at [1]. Please express your opinion. Tony the Marine

Template:User Israel

[edit]

Just posting here to let you know that Template:User Israel was deleted because it expressed a political opinion (all such userboxes were deleted). In its place, Template:User Israel now displays: This user comes from Israel. Since you don't come from Israel from what I understand, maybe you don't need this template. If you do come from Israel though, please accept my apologies. -- Y Ynhockey || Talk Y 22:16, 1 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Universities....

[edit]

Hey there Vizcarra. Although we have crossed paths now a few times, I don't think I've ever properly said hi and introduced myself, so consider this it. First of all, I want to say that I appreciate all your efforts to create Mexican articles. I'll eternally be in your shadow in that regard.

It seems that you have been pretty persuasive in convincing the other members of Wikiproject Mexico to go along with your proposal, which nonetheless still doesn't appear to have been concretized as a consensus. Either that, or your stance has prevailed as a defacto state of affairs.

Just so you know, I personally don't mind having articles titled in that language. But I echo Ruiz's concern that "It's quite uncomfortable to read something like "After attending the Vejhjhjkhjkh Ehjkjhjh, Fulano joined the Jjkaksjsks Inlkklakl" when you are not familiar with that language (and most users of W:en are not familiar with our lang.)"

So here is how I feel in regards to Spanish language naming. In some cases, such as place names, names of people, names of works of art (unless they have an well-known, alternate title in English) they definitely ought to be in Spanish. But I think that with organizations like political parties, labor unions, civic organizations, and schools, where the majority of the words comprising the title have English translations, an English title ought to be preferred. If this scheme were used, the problem of the variety of possible translations could be resolved with multiple redirects.

And I would of course allow some flexibility for schools, orgs, etc. known more commonly in English by their Spanish names or for whatever other reason ought to remain in Spanish.

So go ahead and move it back to Instituto Politécnico Nacional, and you may want to check the other schools (I may hav moved one or two others). And I'll stop moving schools and universities for now. But I'm going to keep moving unions and government agencies, etc., as I find them.

If this is a problem, let me know. I have only recently discovered WikiProject Mexico, and while I have yet to sign on, I am keeping my eye on it. So I may add some of these thoughts to the discussion page there if I can get over the shame of being a latecomer to the debate.

UNAM issue

[edit]

Hello.--- I just joined Wikipedia, and in the making of my userpage I stumped into a weird UNAM logo: it only had UM. I changed it according to my beliefs, and it seems that the original author got somewhat angry at me. Very quickly he made a template:user_UM, to substitute the other acronym, and I still think that's wrong--- I mean, I should know: I went to school there. Please check my claims in Template_talk:User_UNAM and tell me what you think.--- Thanks, Louie 03:34, 8 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Now UDG→UAG/UdeG

[edit]

I just noticed that Lufthmark made another mistake. He made a wrong Template:User_UDG, because there are two universities with similar names in the city of Guadalajara: UdeG (state-sponsored Universidad de Guadalajara), and UAG (private catholic Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara). Lufthmark mixes them. That's not just mascots (UdeG's Black Lions vs. UAG Tecos [Owls]): the mix up is so wrong that in the 60's there were fights and wounded people on each side. Even today some alumni from each school don't talk to each other.

I made the appropriate templates and changes in the userbox project, but given my previous experience, I do not dare tell Lufthmark he is wrong again---would you please confirm my claim? I may need a mediator soon. See [www.udg.mx] and [www.uag.mx], plus the wrong template template:User_UDG and the category Wikipedia:Userboxes/Education/Mexico.--- Thanks, Louie 04:42, 8 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Requesting short translation

[edit]

I'm working on translating a biography from Italian to English, in order to write a featured article. If possible, can you please translate just this paragraph:

Thanks for your help :) — 0918BRIAN • 2006-03-14 04:51

Where did you get the text, it's not propertly typed so I can't understand all of it, this is all I can assume it says:
The scope of his trip was Venice, the city where the Italian talent lived more quietly and profitted the most from their studies, a cause for the vast commerce fomented from the caution of the government and saw again the Robortello and became friends with the famous Pietro Aretino, who was in private hated by all, he was also, in public, flattered, paid, exalted by all while the clever, knowning of what and how many things human vile is capable of, the old saying was fulfilled, the world is of who steals it.

The text is from 1862, so it is probably using old language. I uploaded the entire document here. The bit I gave you is from page 111. — 0918BRIAN • 2006-03-14 05:22

About Satellites

[edit]

Dude you've got a typo on your Satellite section in your user page. it says "satex" instead of "Satmex", also Satmex 1 through 4 do not exist, "Satmex 5" takes its name from it being the 5th mexican satellite launched into orbit and it being the first to be launched by Satmex. Anyways I can help you out writing those articles if you want, please reply on my talk page. El Oso 21:38, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your picture

[edit]

I have reverted your picture to its original state after it was discovered that the new version was actually showing someone else (see here). HTH HAND —Phil | Talk 13:17, 24 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Whoops, I didn't mean for anyone else to come here to chide you — I wasn't complaining, honest, I just thought it was funny! I do see a striking resemblance between us... What makes it doubly odd, and completely coincidental, is that someone just mentioned the original picture to me today, as apparently it has its "anniversary" tomorrow. Anyway, um... Flattered as I am, I think it would probably be better for you to have your own picture there. Who knows if my mother were to somehow stumble across the picture and start thinking you were me! You'd have to go to all my family reunions and stuff, and you probably wouldn't enjoy it... Cheers! — Asbestos | Talk (RFC) 13:34, 24 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
