Coal-fired power stations in South Africa

[edit]

The article Coal-fired power stations in South Africa doesn't exist, so I think you are actually referring to Category:Coal-fired power stations in South Africa? That is a category page, which is used to organise articles. To add to that category, you have to add the text [[Category:Coal-fired power stations in South Africa]] to the article on the specific power station. So the only way to add other power stations to the category is to write articles about each one. What you could do, though, is create an article List of coal-fired power stations in South Africa and make that a complete list. - htonl (talk) 12:38, 24 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

See Wikipedia:Categorization for a better explanation of how categories work. - htonl (talk) 12:55, 24 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I stumbled on this by accident. If you visit the article on Colenso you will find a section on the now-defunct Colenso Power Station. Although I had first-hand knowledge of that power station (I lived there for 13 years), I believe that everything that I wrote came from the Eskom website rather than my first-hand knowledge (references in the article). (BTW, I am half English and half Dutch (though some might say a quarter Dutch and a quarter Fries), and was brought up in South Africa). I now live in the United Kingdom. Coordinates in articles

[edit]

You may want to take a look at how I formatted the coordinates in some of your pass articles. The template {{coord}} allows you to create links to WP:GeoHack, which allows users to view locations using Google Maps and other such tools. Let me know if you have any questions. WikiTravel

[edit]

Hi,

Don't want to chase you away here, but I think you might also be interested in WikiTravel. It not associated with Wikipedia and concentrates on Travel, specifically How to get to places, the accommodation at those places, what to see and do and what it will cost you. Their rules on Notability and Referencing is a lot more relaxed. See South Africa and Kruger National Park as examples --NJR_ZA (talk) 08:26, 11 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Easy referencing

[edit]

There is an easy way to add references. Visit Special:Preferences, select the Editing tab, check Show edit toolbar (requires JavaScript) and save your preferences. This will give you a nice toolbar above the text box when you edit.

Next, select the Gadgets tab and look under Editing gadgets for refTools. If you check this and save your preferences you will find a that you have a button on the right of the the edit toolbar labled cite. If you click on that and click on web or book etc you will get a nice popup form to fill in the reference details. Click on the correct location in the edit box where you want the ref to appear, the click on Add citation and a nicely formatted ref is inserted into the edit box. --NJR_ZA (talk) 13:22, 19 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Great job on Lion Sands Reserve! I just saw it, and it was really well done. I still haven't created any articles near that! Congrats(: Saebjorn! 00:20, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dams

[edit]

I have added a partial list of dams at User:NJR ZA/Dams with data from ListofRegisteredDamsSep2009.xls. It still needs cleanup of wikilinks for the dam and river names, but most importantly, a lot of the data seems questionable. When using the volume and area provided to calculate the average depth, a number of dams calculate to ridiculous depths, up to 6500m. I'm rather hesitant to use data this as reference data if it is not good data. --NJR_ZA (talk) 16:30, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi, thanks for your contributions on South African rivers, but I am concerned that you are copying text directly from the eWISA website. While using websites as a source of information is allowed, copying text word by word from them is usually not because the text on the website is copyrighted (see the site's terms of use), and submitting such information to Wikipedia constitutes a copyright violation. The rivers are all notable, and deserve articles, but articles which are copied verbatim from websites are liable to being speedy deleted under speedy criterion G12. It is better if you can write about the rivers in your own words. Sjakkalle (Check!) 13:02, 31 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Status and Advice

[edit]

As reviewing administrator, I recognize that you are using minimal amounts from these sources, and that sometimes the facts are hard to express in other ways. Even so, you should change the wording, so it does not show up as a copyvio in an automated search. DGG ( talk ) 16:18, 1 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have made some minor changes in order to get the sorting working:

  • Removed the {{convert}} template. Apparantly it does not play well with javascript sorting
  • Move all the references and notes out of the numeric fields

I have also removed the {{disputed}} template and added {{refimprove}}. The data looks good, but it will still be a good thing to add more references if and when we can find them.

Thanks for all your hard work and thanks for taking my criticisms in the spirit it was intended. We now have an excellent List of reservoirs and dams in South Africa :)

I have placed a request to a robot (see bottom of Xenobot Mk V) to add all the new dam articles you have created to WP:SAFRICA. This should happen in a couple of days. Will do the same with the rivers at a later stage.

Loskop Dam

[edit]

Sure, can change it back if you like. I just thought that a dam and a reservoir in South Africa are often considered the same. In Dutch and maybe in English the dam refers to the wall specifically, while the reservoir may be the water body. But in South African usage "dam reservoir" sounds like a tautology. You are now a Reviewer

[edit]

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 01:18, 18 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
