Adding citations
[edit]See wp:citations
When editing, if you have a browser which supports Wikipedia:RefToolbar/2.0, you should see this at the top of the edit window
Clicking on Cite will drop down an additional bar, clicking on "Templates" will drop down a list:
Mine has an additional. See template:Cite web (for web pages) template:Cite news (for news sources) template:Cite book and template:Cite journal for scientific journals, not on the options is template:cite magazine and others. See Citation Style 1 below.
For wp:inline citations, One typically uses ...Bob married Alice.<ref>{{cite web |url= http://www.cnn.com/MajorEvent3935721 |title= Bob Marries Alice |author= Jim1138 |publisher= [[CNN]] |date= September 18, 2033 |accessdate= January 2016}}</ref> If you want to put it in the external links section, leave off the <ref>...</ref> and just add {{cite web |url= http://www.cnn.com/MajorEvent3935721 |title= Bob Marries Alice |author= Jim1138 |publisher= [[CNN]] |date= September 18, 2033 |accessdate= January 2016}} THe former becomes ...Bob married Alice.[1] The latter becomes:
- Jim1138 (September 18, 2033). "Bob Marries Alice". CNN. Retrieved January 2016.
{{cite web}}
: Check date values in:|accessdate=
and|date=
(help)CS1 maint: numeric names: authors list (link)
As you can see, it didn't like my date and shows a warning in red. It's best to check one's work by clicking the Preview button before the Save page button. If you are only editing a section, the citations don't show. I sometimes add the reflist temporarily (don't forget to remove it!)
One needs a {{reflist}} to display the citations in the desired spot. Otherwise they are displayed at the end of the page.
