Wikiproject Automobiles Notification

Hi Vaoverland, you were on the list of members at WikiProject Automobiles and we are introducing a new way of listing members, as the old list was becoming too long. Our new method involves having all of our members in a category.

To add yourself to the category just add the userbox to your user page by putting {{Wiki Auto Project}} where you want the userbox. Alternatively if you don't like the userbox you can add [[Category:WikiProject Automobiles members|Vaoverland]] to your userpage.

Help with editing maps

Hi: I see taht you have edited some maps in wikipedia. Can you help me with some instructions on how to do that? Is there a tutorail for creating and editing maps for wikipedia? How do i zoom in, paint countries with different collors and assign leyends. For example create a map like the the one here "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Death_Penalty_World_Map.png". I know they used "Image:BlankMap-World.png" to create that map, but how do they go from this one to the one with all the info on it? . What software should i use. Is there a tutorial for doing it? Category:US State Related Ships

I had already created the category and been working on a WV related ships, and started MD and VA. Each state has ships named for the state, places in the state and people from the state. We need to flesh them out even more. Such as the USS Nimitz is named for Chester C. Nimitz from Texas, so it would fall in the category of ship related to Texas. The USS Huntington is in the WV category of ships related to WV along with others. Ships named for rivers end up in multiple state categories. --71Demon 16:48, 24 December 2006 (UTC)

Category US State Related Ships

Please put your vote to keep thread up again. Once a cfd is removed, they should have to wait 6 months to put it back. This is nothing more than abuse because somebody didn't get their way.

If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). Hampton Roads

Q. I live in an area named Hampton Roads, Virginia. When people ask me why the area is named after its "roads", I have to explain that its some old nautical term, or something. Do you have a quick and easy explanation that I can use in the future? [Joe Price]

A. "Quick and easy"? That's not what I do ...

The history of "road" is closely linked to that of both "ride" and "raid". It's actually from the past tense of the Old English verb "to ride", which we retain in a different spelling. In Old English "road" meant a journey on horseback. A little later it came to mean riding with hostile intent, hence the "raid" sense, "raid" being an old Scots form of "road". The much later creation "inroad" preserves this meaning.

By about 1300 "road" could also refer to a ship riding on the waves and out of this came the harbour sense of "road", a partly sheltered stretch of water near the shore in which ships could ride at anchor, as in "roadstead", in which the second part is the obsolete "stead" for a place.

Our sense of a road as being a fixed route or line on land for getting from one place to another came along much later, at the very end of the sixteenth century (Shakespeare is the first known user). This explains the old joke that there are no roads in the City of London (the medieval core of the metropolis), as indeed there aren't: all the ways there had been named before the word came into the language.

Article on Jamestown, Virginia in the German Wikipedia

Hi, I'm a regular contributor to the German Wikipedia, particularly on American history (see my german userpage for a list) and protected areas. Unfortunately this got me the job to improve our (German) article on Jamestown in time for the anniversary in May. I just stared to look for literature and will need some time to get an overview. But may I contact you with specific questions if they arise? So far I have one question: Do you have a contact to the NPS staff at Colonial NHP or Jamestown NHS? I might be interested in e-mailing with someone of their interpretive staff to get some more images. Thanks for the teaser about Lee's birthday. They ran a local item in news here with a painting of him at age 24 when he was at Fort Monroe. Wow, what a different image. I have seen that painting before. Very dramatic, and difficult to understand today how a 24-year-old man would have a portrait painted. Most people today think of Lee in his 50s and 60s, but he was known as a extraordinarily handsome man and women swooned for him throughout his life. Even during his invasions of the North in the Civil War, local women flocked to get near him. He has to rank with George Washington and John F. Kennedy as one of the most charismatic public figures in American history. I have been going through some job changes, which has reduced the amount of time I can waste on writing Wikipedia articles, but all is well. Thanks for asking. Hello. I'm wondering about your edits to Anne Sullivan today, particularly the new "Legacy" section. It appears to me to be unreferenced and, while I agree with the sentiment, POV and unencyclopedic. I didn't want to revert them, since you appear to be very experienced here, but I was wondering if you could explain how this is an appropriate edit. Due to the high number of articles relating to John Rolfe, the English settler at Jamestown, and the fact that the other 20th century John Rolfe has a middle name, i think the disambig information can be presented on the article pages without a separate disambiguation articles. Do you have any objection to doing it that way, and/or are you already going through and changing all the double redirects created by a separate disambig page. Greetings!

My name is Peter Huntington, and I am a new contributor/editor. I grew up in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, so I was immersed, from an early age, in "all things H. H. Rogers". I was interested, of course, in looking into who had written and maintained the Rogers articles here, fully expecting that it would be someone from back home. I was surprised (and pleased) to find you instead.

Fairhaven is a small town (15,000 people) dominated by the legacy of a man nearly a hundred years dead. I venture to say that it is the only town of its size anywhere in the world that has its own gothic cathedral (the Unitarian Memorial Church), its own Italian palazzo (the Millicent Library), its own neo-Romanesque castle (Fairhaven High School), its own huge Tudor half-timbered manse (the Tabitha Inn, now a Roman Catholic pensioner's home called Our Lady's Haven) where Mark Twain, Frederick Douglass, and John D. Rockefeller all stayed, a Masonic Temple worthy of King Solomon himself, and public parks as grand as any outside New York or Chicago. It's really a bizarre place. If you haven't visited, you should.

I know that your main entree to Mr. Rogers is his little railroad in Virginia, and I certainly can understand your interest in railroadiana. I like it too, but in a very superficial way.

Anyhow, I want to commend you for your work and thank you for your interest in something that has intrigued me for most of my life. PeterHuntington 02:05, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

Raleigh is noteable for lots of reasons, so I wouldn't single out Roanoke in the intro. Maybe the intro needs beefing up, but in that case I'd simply describe the colony as 'failed', rather than go into detail.--Shtove 13:05, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

help with Brandy Station dispute?

Hi, would you be willing to help me a dispute regarding Battle of Brandy Station? I have upgraded the article with a lot of info and a user keeps reverting me, saying my info is "unsourced" and "POV", despite my ample use of footnotes. He has easily violated 3RR by now, but I hesitate to swing sledgehammers and thought you could help mediate or point me to an appropriate place for that. The dispute should be immediately apparent from the edit history, but I can provide backup details if it's confusing. Fairhaven Branch Railroad

Thanks for the heads-up on the FBR. I used to live near a long-disused spur of the FBR that led to the Atlas Tack Company in Fairhaven. I hope you don't mind, but I did a minor stylistic tune-up on this new article. St Johns

I really must applaud the excellent additions to the article on the church. The background to the development of the parish is something that has long been needed.

I visited Washington in early 2005, and when I mentioned to the staff at the National Building Museum that I was visiting Richmond the next day, they told me about the church. I was delighted to visit it in company with a friend, and I was overwhelmed by the sense of history in the place. Later, when I became an editor, I discovered that the building had no article, and I kicked one off, based around a photograph I'd taken. If there is one thing I'm especially glad about in my contributions to Wikipedia, it is this small stub of an article, and it pleases me immensely to see it expanded. United States Military Railway

Hi,

I see that you are the author of (among many others) Wikepedia's article on United States Military Railroad in the American Civil War. It seems that entry could use some fleshing out. In addition to its considerable role in Virginia, the USMR also reconstructed and ran railroads in the Western Theater (where I believe most of its wartime manpower was utilized) and, for a brief period, ran the Western Maryland and Hanover Railway in Maryland and Pennsylvania respectively, during and immediately after the battle of Gettysburg.

Re: Native Americans

I think it should be summarized-shortened more; it seems a little wordy for an article that's supposed to generally cover the topic. Is there a main article for this? Perhaps you can shorten the length as it seems to be given a little bit of undue weight of topic coverage--it's too detailed. Also, did this individual who had this Jesuit adventure have a Native name before Don Luis? And why do you mark all your edits as minor when they're not? oncamera^(t) 02:53, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

ADD/ ADHD realted articles

Hi Vaoverland,

I was wondering what the story is with the ADD articles/entries? They seem to be blocked or if changes are made, they are "reverted" back- and not just corrected for grammarical correctness.

What do you think the issues is?

I am a new contributor. Used this a bit during my master's program-not as "offical research" as that is not allowed, in many schools now, but as a guide. I am graduating now, and wanted to add to, and correct something that I saw. I am a bit of an expert, but I do not work for anyone related, or mentioned.

I felt like one Dr. was using the current article as an "ad" for himself, and I find that offensive. Is there anything I can do about that? Please advise. I am interested in hearing more about it.

TFA/R revamping

I have proposed revising the WP:TFA/R process. After the recent rejection of my proposal, I researched Old FAs. You were the nominator of an article that was promoted to WP:FA before 2005, and you continue to be an active wikipedian. Your article has not yet been featured on the main page as a WP:TFA. I am wondering if you have ever made an active effort to get it featured and if you are aware of the new TFA/R procedure, which requires an active request. Please respond to my talk page. I'm looking for help

and you came to mind. Some time ago I posted a gallery of images at kokopelli. I just got a call from the woman who formerly owned the property on which they are located. She has recently donated the land to a Trust of some sort who now own the rights to all the images taken there. And don't want them on the WWW. Rather than have any sort of issue about them I'd like to see them go away from the article, but am concerned that if I just remove them somone else will just revert, since they are a great (opinion) addition to the article. So I figured that if you view the pictures as being some sort of copyright infringement (which i guess they now are) you can do some swift, supple surgery and all will be well. Again. Are there cargo restrictionsin the tunnel-specifically propane gas in a Motor home ?

I believe that answer is yes, if we are talking about Virginia's highway tunnels and bridge-tunnels. For example, VDOT tunnel rules says: What to do if you are traveling with hazardous materials. Motor homes traveling through tunnels must stop to have propane tanks checked before entering tunnels. There are specific regulations on transporting hazardous materials through state-owned tunnels. Jamestown, Virginia and Jamestown Settlement pages

Mark, Thanks for your note. My main concern with the Jamestown, Virginia article is that so much material appears before the contents box that people only see that section, even add material to it, making it a mini article in its own right and duplicating material below it. Also, some material gets duplicated in that article and in the Jamestown Settlement article.

My idea was to clearly distinguish and cross-link: making Jamestown Settlement the source for detailed 1607-1699 history, and Jamestown, Virginia for an overview. Both articles are long and hard to use. Sorry to disturb the VA crew.--Kenmayer 18:51, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:Burlington_train_LOC_image.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self-no-disclaimers}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Chickahominy River

Mark, Some of your recent edits caught my eye. This article has a few historical inaccuracies about the Peninsula Campaign, which could be fixed, but don't you think that section is excessively long? It essentially covers both the full PC and the 7DB, including those parts without any ties to the Chickahominy, such as Yorktown or Malvern Hill. My name is Dave Ferreira. I have recently finished my Peace Corps service (2.5 years) in Perú.

I would like to translate your article, "Hunter vs. Farmer Theory" into Spanish. Before starting, I want to seek permission from all major contributors.

I feel that I am capable of accurately translating this article. I completed my PC service with an Intermediate Advanced level of Spanish (an official State Dept. designation). Also, my father, Mario Ferreira, was a translator and was, for many years, the chair of certification testing for the American Translators Assn.

Carpenter Body Company

I have added a "{{prod}}" template to the article Carpenter Body Company, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
