Typography, straight/curly quotation marks

Hi there, I partly reverted your edit on Gentoo Linux as you changed curly into straight quotation marks. I did this as the manual of style dictates straight quotation marks are preferred over curly ones. See WP:PUNC for more info. Sorry, I didn’t know that straight, typographic incorrect (!) quotation marks should be used on en:WP. On de:WP – where I am mainly active – we use only typographic correct quotation marks, therefore I made this edit. Strange rule… But thank you for this information! I didn't know either, I just got curious after seeing your edit whether there was any rule or advice in the Manual of Style. It turned out there was. I am used to typing the straight quotation marks, so the rule doesn't bother me at all, but I suppose you could argue against using straight quotation marks :) Either way, keep up the good work! - Ewald (talk) 18:09, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

I really wonder about this rule. I can understand that it is much easier to use the typographic incorrect, straight quotation marks instead of curly ones because you find them on your keyboard, but this is a somewhat lazy argument. Perhaps it isn’t a good idea to change them on the whole en:WP into curly ones (there are too many articles that should be corrected) but I think it could be possible to make a script (or something like that) that changes all straight into curly quotation marks. Unfortunately I don’t know how to make such a script. Debianux (talk) 09:34, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

I suppose a bot is able to correct this without much trouble, but I think it would be wise to first get the rule changed before going through all the trouble of configuring a bot. As I said, I don't have a very strong opinion on the issue, but if you feel obliged to put some effort into getting it changed, try the already existant discussion on Wikipedia_talk:Manual_of_Style#Straight_and_typographers_quotes.
