Managing a conflict of interest

[edit]

Information icon Hello, Vaishax86. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on the page Vaishnavi Sundar, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

  • avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, colleagues, company, organization or competitors;
  • propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (you can use the {{request edit}} template);
  • disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest#How to disclose a COI);
  • avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam);
  • do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. —0xf8e8 💿 (talk) 00:56, 25 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. thank you for your message. will request changes from now on, and remove from personal website. any reason why it is advised? i have seen many personal websites use Wikipedia on them. your reply is appreciated. thank you. Vaishax86 (talk) 07:25, 25 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. To be clear, the prohibition on linking only relates to what you do here on WP, not elsewhere. You can still link to the WP article from a personal website if you wish; we just ask that you don't insert links to Sundar's personal website or those of related projects like Lime Soda Films / Women Making Films in articles that are not the Sundar biography, as this could be considered (rightly or wrongly) spam.
If you could make a simple statement disclosing your COI, it would be much appreciated. It doesn't have to be much more specific than "I have a conflict of interest with regards to the Vaishnavi Sundar article". I also noticed there's been quite a few accounts and IP addresses editing the article who use similar edit summaries (list below). Would you mind disclosing any prior accounts / IP addresses you've personally used to edit, or accounts that have edited on behalf of you? We generally ask that users list all accounts they've edited under, as specified at Wikipedia:Sockpuppetry.

The material you added on Sundar's most recent film (link here) appears to duplicate the copyrighted synopsis of Dysphoric provided on the Lime Soda Films website. If you own the rights to this material, or you are editing on behalf of someone who does, then we ask that the rightsholder release the material under a suitable license as specified at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. This could be as simple as a notice on the page I've linked reading "The text of this page is available for modification and reuse under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-Sharealike 3.0 Unported License and the GNU Free Documentation License (unversioned, with no invariant sections, front-cover texts, or back-cover texts)." However, it's worth noting that releasing the text under this license means the content can be freely modified and reused essentially anywhere for any commercial or non-commercial purpose, not just on Wikipedia. If that's not what you want, the material can't be included on Wikipedia. Unfortunately, we can't accept material licensed just for noncommercial or Wikipedia-only use.
Accordingly, I've replaced that material with a notice explaining how you can release it. Sorry, I know all these requests are a little bureaucratic -- it's just that we want to ensure we're respecting copyright laws and that we're aware of any relevant conflicts of interest out of an abundance of caution. One thing I'd caution you about is that our Wikipedia biography pages don't work like bios you might be used to submitting for newspapers or professional websites; we have a rather ruthless commitment to neutrality and try to avoid anything resembling advocacy or promotion as part of that. An article about yourself (or someone you're connected to / editing on behalf of) isn't necessarily a good thing; it will often include prominent criticisms and controversies documented in reliable sources and may not always include directory-style listings of Sundar's films or other material you'd want to include. We of course endeavor to be cautious and fair in our descriptions of article subjects, but this doesn't always align with what the article subject may have wanted or views as fair. The fact almost anyone can edit an article is somewhat of a mixed blessing in this regard. —0xf8e8 💿 (talk) 20:25, 25 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

i will read your message in more detail. i do not know of all the IP addresses you've listed. this page was originally created by someone during a female artist Wikipedia editathon. since then, I (Sundar herself) have been updating it based on any new film, any new article etc. could you help me understand if that changes anything at all? Vaishax86 (talk) 20:31, 25 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Basically: are any other accounts on WP yours or those of people personally or professionally connected to you? (for example User:Vaishax) If so, we ask the same things of those accounts I mentioned in my initial message (e.g. that they avoid editing the article). The more pressing issue is copyright, though -- we need explicit permission to include the text summary of Dysphoric you included in the article (link here). Could you include the text

The text of this page is available for modification and reuse under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-Sharealike 3.0 Unported License and the GNU Free Documentation License (unversioned, with no invariant sections, front-cover texts, or back-cover texts).

on the webpage https://limesodafilms.com/dysphoric/? If so, the copyright issue could be resolved. You can read more about what this means at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. —0xf8e8 💿 (talk) 04:31, 31 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

okay I've added it now! could you let me know if that looks fine? thank you Vaishax86 (talk) 08:45, 31 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that looks fine; thanks for responding so promptly. —0xf8e8 💿 (talk) 04:03, 1 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

My pleasure. could you tell me what happens now? From here on, what's the protocol for adding latest developments to the page? Vaishax86 (talk) 09:19, 1 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
