Source for crush depth?

[edit]

Hello! Could you tell me the source where you found the crush depth for Balao-class submarines? I don't have it listed in my sources. Thanks! TomTheHand 13:08, 20 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have mixed feelings about the sources you've given. Forum posts are not reliable sources. The first post states that "Friedman's books on US submarines give the details of the construction of these boats." I have both of Friedman's books in front of me, and none of them explicitly give the crush depth of Balaos. His book on earlier subs mentions that in the design phase it was discussed that using better and thicker steel might result in a crush depth of up to 900 ft, but it doesn't say that that was achieved, and a note in the back of the book mentions a possible maximum depth of 650 ft. The other forum post gives no sources at all. I don't think that the crush depth should be added without a reliable source. TomTheHand 22:23, 21 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Would you consider these as a reliable source for detemining the maximum/crush depth of the Balao Class? http://saragossa.net/cubby/cubbyphotos.html and http://www.usschopper.com/Chopper%20Deep%20Dive%20Report.htm

Hello Sniper! I'm sorry, the first one does not appear to be a reliable source according to Wikipedia's criteria. The second appears to be an official report on Chopper's depth excursion, but it can't be used for determining the maximum/crush depth of the Balao class; crush depth is a calculated figure, and we can't say "Well, Chopper got down to 1000 feet and almost collapsed, so the class's collapse depth must be somewhere around there." We would need a reliable, third-party published source with a reputation for fact-checking and accuracy which states in no uncertain terms that the crush depth of the Balao class is x.
