Sonnet?

@Uryence, Just dropping onto a page the surmise of a scholar concerning the sonnet's first appearance, especially one that cannot be checked by the reader, is no guarantee of its acceptance by colleagues and therefore of its encyclopaedic worth. And since you have chosen an author influenced by Troilus and Criseyde, I'm surprised you didn't bring in the fact that Chaucer translated a sonnet by Petrarch there, though he did not borrow the form. Not being able to check your source, I am unable to see whether it is the author or you who surmises that this anticipation of the sonnet form is "accidental". In any case, if it is accidental, then his lyric cannot be claimed as the first English sonnet, just as a coincidence; but if it is conscious, then there needs to be proof of intention.
