Participation Drive

League of Copyeditors participation drive!

Dear League member,

We've started a participation drive for the remainder of February. If you can, please help clear the backlog by adopting the following goals each week:

Thanks for your help! Rintrah 09:33, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

Thanks. I made that edit to the article. Unimaginative Username 19:14, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

Ananthabhadram needs copy edit

Please, could you take a look at the article Ananthabhadram? It needs quite some copy editing job. In case you are interested, do not begin before 10 June. I am making some improvements to the article. I hope to get the article to a GA status and eventually to an FA status. Aditya Kabir 08:20, 8 June 2007 (UTC)

I think that an editor who is more familiar with the culture would be of more help, but it is a compliment to be asked. Thank you, and good luck with the article. Regards, Unimaginative Username 00:26, 12 June 2007 (UTC)

Hi. I'm sorry to bother you, but as a LoCE member, I just wondered if you would be willing to have a look through the Sheerness‎ article. It is currently a Featured Article Candidate and needs a copy-edit for grammar by someone who hasn't yet seen it. Any other ways to improve the article would also be welcome. Thank you very much, if you can. Epbr123 17:38, 8 July 2007 (UTC)

Billion Dollar Prize

Heh heh. Just kidding. I use the "Billion Dollar Prize" head to get the attention of users. Anyway, have you heard of WikiProject Grammar? Editors who are members of the LoCE, like you and I, should get involved with WikiProject Grammar, because they're two pretty similar groups. I've already joined. Look into it! Oddmartian2 22:07, 7 September 2007 (UTC) P.S. If you have a reply, or any questions, please type them on my talk page.

Rock Springs Massacre

Thanks a lot for the help with the copy edit. Sometimes you look at something so many times and you don't notice the simplest mistake, you know what I mean? Thanks again. IvoShandor 03:12, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

You're welcome, and yes, I do! Almost finished with the first pass, but I need to look again with fresh eyes in the next couple of days. Unimaginative Username 03:15, 21 March 2007 (UTC)
Well I greatly appreciate it. I think this article is on it's way. If you notice anything else glaring, that is to say not minor, be sure to mention it, either on the talk page or on the peer review which is now currently open. Thanks again. : ) IvoShandor 03:37, 21 March 2007 (UTC)
I think that's all these eyes can do at this time. Will try to take a fresh look in the next few days if time permits. Good luck with the process. Incidentally, I learned a lot about the subject matter from reading your article - that's a bonus of editing! :) Unimaginative Username 03:43, 21 March 2007 (UTC)
That's why I like to do peer reviews btw, this event is fairly obscure so I was happy to add it to Wikipedia. The statement is about percentages, don't know what happened there. The other change sounds good as well. Thanks for doing all this work, I know it was kind of jacked up. IvoShandor 18:36, 21 March 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for all your help on Rock Springs Massacre, it got GA, some more work and onto FAC, woo hoo! IvoShandor 07:36, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

Ta da

You earned this . . .

The Copyeditor's Barnstar
For overall excellence in copy editing Rock Springs Massacre in March 2007. IvoShandor 13:09, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

Rock Springs 2

How's it goin'? I was wondering if, when you have time, you could stop by Rock Springs Massacre, sign the template on the talk page and take another stab at a copy edit. The article is really quite different from the Good article version that you helped with, though most of the text from that version remains it has undergone a significant expansion as well as a structural overhaul. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ahead of time. IvoShandor 09:25, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

I might have seen it too often to be able to view it independently (not to mention certain feelings of futility :-( lol). I'm going to try editing a different article now. If the Real World allows the time, I'll make a stab at RSM again. Very flattering of you to ask, though -- thanks! Unimaginative Username 17:45, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
Just saw that the article that I had intended to edit is being re-written by its author, so I guess today is your lucky day :-) Unimaginative Username 17:58, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
Awesome, thanks, again. : ) I responded to your queries on the talk page too. IvoShandor 20:28, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
It's pretty much a new article this time around so hopefully your past association with it won't encumber you too much. IvoShandor 20:29, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
In retrospect, I think some of my comments on the article's talk page may have sounded snippy. Apologies if that was the case -- they all were meant to be explanatory and constructive. It was a busy day, and apparently, I shouldn't try to edit and chew gum at the same time. :-) Unimaginative Username 04:23, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

Rock Springs massacre

Well, it's been awhile but I have a few more tweaks to go and Rock Springs Massacre is ready for FAC. I have made a few last notes on what I see left as far as work and hoped you might be able to undertake a copy edit and/or brief look at the article one final time. Thanks. 11:03, 21 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your work with this article, it was promoted to FA yesterday.
The Editor's Barnstar
Bestowed upon the unimaginatively named one for consistently responding to requests for copy editing on Rock Springs massacre. Your help was invaluable as my eyes began to bleed and errors were unnoticeable after looking at the article for long enough. The article was promoted to FA yesterday. IvoShandor 13:47, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Congrats on your scholarship and persistence in getting to FA! Very pleased to have played some small part. Unimaginative Username 04:09, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

Thank you. I was pretty pleased. : ) IvoShandor 04:11, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

FAU

I replied to your comments on the article's talk page. Thanks for the c/e. KnightLago 01:54, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

Roger that. Want to get through as much of the article as I can before fatigue sets in, then will address the comments, if that's OK. Unimaginative Username 02:09, 14 October 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the copy edit. I would appreciate it if you could continue whenever you get a chance. Thanks, KnightLago 03:00, 14 October 2007 (UTC)
First pass done! Will take a second pass after being away from it for a day or so. Oh, and don't mind my occasional facetiousness -- relieves the tediousness inherent in the task (as does an article as interesting as this one). Good luck with FA! Unimaginative Username 08:39, 14 October 2007 (UTC)
I addressed your comments on the article's talk page. I wanted to thank you again for the copy edit. I am terrible with commas as you saw. Also, now that you have read the entire article feel free to comment on it at WP:FAC. Thanks. KnightLago 13:42, 14 October 2007 (UTC)
Thanks again for all the help! KnightLago 21:55, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

My pleasure. Truly an interesting article -- will look for it on the Main Page soon! Unimaginative Username 22:49, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

I saw that and didn't want to get into a edit-war right now. The user has a pro-FAU stance. But I will keep an eye on it. KnightLago 12:23, 15 October 2007 (UTC)

I added a comment to Owls' user page to see the talk before making changes. I really don't want an edit war right now over the article. But could you keep the article on your watch list for a while just so you can keep an eye on it, and if necessary explain the changes from an outside viewpoint? Thanks. KnightLago 14:27, 15 October 2007 (UTC)
I saw your comment at FAU talk. It was very well put. I was not trying to change any content, but only to make the sentence reflect grammatically what the consensus had decided. What I don't understand is why Owl took offense to the change. Even if he has a pro-FAU POV, it is not an insult to FAU to say that it serves more commuter students than other schools of its size. It seems factual that the admission standards and graduation rates are lower. The article reflects that the President is trying to improve the school on many fronts. The cited sources verify that these are facts, not POV. The reader may draw its own conclusion as to whether schools that attract students from all over the country (Harvard, Yale, Duke, Vassar, etc.) are perceived as affording higher-quality education than those that attract mostly locals. The evidence is that FAU is taking significant steps to improvement, so to that extent, the article is favorable to FAU (and factual), and certainly not a negative POV to which anyone who is affiliated with the school should take offense. Congratulations again on an excellent, comprehensive, and well-balanced article. I will watch it. Hope it makes FA! Regards, Unimaginative Username 19:36, 15 October 2007 (UTC)
I was wondering if you could do me another favor. At WP:FAC they wanted me to either choose FAU or Florida Atlantic in the article and use it uniformly. I went with Florida Atlantic and changed the article to eliminate the FAU references in the text (except for names and such). I read through it again afterwards to make sure it flowed but I am sure I missed something. Can you just read through the article and make sure it still flows properly and it sounds good? I don't think you need to look at punctuation, just read through and see if everything is correct. Thanks. KnightLago 23:50, 15 October 2007 (UTC)
I understand their point for formal writing, although of course in informal speech we frequently use "USC", "UCLA", etc. Another way to avoid the repetitiousness of frequently writing the whole name is to refer to "the university" at times where its name has been spelled out recently. Just a thought... I'm in the middle of c/e 2007 Midwest flooding at the request of one of the significant contributors, but I should be able to look at FAU again within the next few hours. Unimaginative Username 00:04, 16 October 2007 (UTC)
Thanks, please do. I did use the university, the school, Florida Atlantic, and Florida Atlantic University. But after changing it I am sure there are places where it would sound better if another form was used. Thus, I turn to the best copy editor I know! :-) KnightLago 00:12, 16 October 2007 (UTC)
Flattery will get you everywhere. Unimaginative Username 00:15, 16 October 2007 (UTC)
Done! I read through very quickly as you suggested, and nothing "tripped" -- I think it's fine. (Caught a couple of other minor things that I missed on the first two passes.) I think this reads very well now. Good luck! Unimaginative Username 01:38, 16 October 2007 (UTC)
GO replied on the FAU talk page basically saying he was tired of us enforcing the rules of the wiki while others did not. I did not respond, and I also encourage you not to. Like I have said before, I don't want a war over there, and he seems like he is mad. I think he needs time to cool off. Anyway, thanks again for all the help. KnightLago 02:29, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

So long as he isn't reverting or making more edits, cool. No, I don't care to respond. If I did, I would probably lose my good faith and say something like, "Sir or Ma'am, according to the article, you attend a school that has abnormally low graduation rates and admissions criteria, including a 1000 SAT. This copy-editor, on the other hand, took accelerated/honors courses all through school, was in the National Honor Society in high school, went to college on a full academic scholarship, and had a modern-day SAT score of 1600. That certainly doesn't mean that he is always right -- everybody is wrong many times -- but it would be preferred if challenges to copy-edits were made by others with strong academic backgrounds and strong verbal skills and knowledge, and if the challenges were supported by verifiable sources, as I have done with some of the edits that I thought might give rise to questions."

But I wouldn't actually say that, because that would be uncivil (and keep him mad). Yes, he'll get over it. Hope the article keeps its high quality. Unimaginative Username 03:10, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

Also, I wanted to give you this to show my appreciation (Feel free to c/e any mistakes). KnightLago 02:54, 16 October 2007 (UTC)
The Working Man's Barnstar
I give this for two reasons. One, for all the time and effort you put into the FAU article; and two, so I can watch you try and figure out how to fit this onto your user page. Good luck! KnightLago 02:54, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

LOL! Thanks much, and - mission accomplished. Ya got anything harder? ;-) Unimaginative Username 03:10, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

Careful now, I went to that school as well.  :-) KnightLago 12:13, 16 October 2007 (UTC)
Yes, I knew that, but at least you don't argue with the copy-editor! :-) (was j/k anyway - they have lots of top grad alumni, as the article says, and I'm sure your name will be in "Notable Alumni" one day. Was jusy saying how I coulda' tweaked the Owl's tail :-) Unimaginative Username 20:57, 16 October 2007 (UTC)
How do you know my name is not there already? I did write that page after all. KnightLago 21:16, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

Good point. :) I liked the version that you were Carrot Top - shouldn'ta' revised it! :) Unimaginative Username 20:54, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

Intrusive Barnstar

When viewed in Mozilla your copyeditor's barnstar overlays the item about English - i.e. it has moved to the upper right. On I.E. Explorer it is OK. My screen resolution is 800 x 600 on an HP workstation running Windows XP Professional. Pax Nabisco Carrionluggage 19:22, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the alert. I have Firefox with 1280x800, so I think the issue might be the lower screen resolution. I put a couple of extra line breaks in. See if that fixes it. I don't like the resulting blank spaces, though. I am not familiar with the coding of how to align these boxes neatly the way so many users do. You see what I'm trying to do -- if you are proficient at this, please feel free to edit my page to make it look right, if you care to bother. Thanks for the message! Unimaginative Username 19:30, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

Thanks - I can read it better now, but the Barnstar is way to the right and I have to scroll. It is also partly overlaid by the Wheaties-Cheerios item. I tried more pixels but that does not help and it shrinks everything. I enjoyed your name, too. My favorite is "User:Lysdexia". I am ambisinistrous at the keyboard (and all left-handed thumbs, too) so I have no editing advice. I am actually tired of my name and would want to be "Clever Hans" (q.v.) or something else - perhaps Eohippus - but it is too hard to change. Carrionluggage 05:01, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

Oh, come on -- "CarrionLuggage is priceless :) "Lysdexia" is good, too - reminiscent of the joke about the dyslexic insomniac agnostic who stayed up all night wondering whether there really is a Dog.
Presently nursing a sprained finger on the sinisterly-abled hand, so having some ambidextrosity is proving hand-y (sic), although ambiendextrose is not a recommended combination for either sleep or tea, due to the conflicting effects. UU is self-descriptive - registered on an impulse, as most probably do (go search my first post LOL), and was stuck for anything more imaginative. Duh.... You could always register a second account and quit using the first, or at least not engage in malicious sock-puppetry, in which case, who would care? Here's an idea for lonely Star Wars fans: Hand Solo. Cheers, Unimaginative Username 23:44, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
