Getting a discussion going
Hi. You've declined my third opinion request here because of the lack of discussion, and I accept your reasoning--but that's exactly the issue here: the other editor seems content with reverting my edits without engaging in a discussion with me. I do not want to continue the edit war, but nor do I want to concede my points until I am persuaded otherwise. What would you recommend I do in this situation? --Koveras ☭ 13:33, 3 November 2014 (UTC)
- Hey there, WP:DISCFAIL is a good essay I read regarding these situations. I admit I too have got stuck a few times and it can be really very frustrating. I once remember waiting for weeks for the IP to respond after I got reverted (made sure atleast I didn't break 3RR), got no answer, and finally restored my version of the page. Additionally, while you wait, you could tag it inline with [dubious – discuss]. Hope this helps and good luck, Ugog Nizdast (talk) 14:08, 3 November 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for the reply! I will read that essay and will try to get some of your suggestions implemented in the meantime... --Koveras ☭ 19:04, 3 November 2014 (UTC)
Removal of 2015 Hindu festival dates and RS reference
There are no reason to remove a WP:RS link for Kalnirnay, a reliable reference for Hindu calendar dates. I request you to revert your edits. Also, please remove the note on User_talk:Khushishah15. --Redtigerxyz Talk 17:54, 20 November 2014 (UTC)
- Sorry, done. It didn't look like an RS to me, wasn't aware about it. -Ugog Nizdast (talk) 18:00, 20 November 2014 (UTC)
Etymology Kerala
The etymology which was added by me in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kerala was undone by various authors. I could not find proper reasons for undoing that. Hence, I had to revert those changes again. Thanks for informing that wikipedia has a terminology called edit-war. I was not aware of that, and I was not intentionally making a edit war or so. The edits I have made are genuine and there is very well a proof for that in the Kerala site (http://www.stateofkerala.in/kerala_facts/kerala_etymology.php). To add more, this same fact is mentioned in tamil and malayalam version of the same page itself.
I am not sure what is the right process to make the changes for this situation. Any guidelines or help would be appreciated.
Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jophine89 (talk • contribs) 08:19, 28 November 2014 (UTC)
- @Jophine89: Per our usual Bold, revert, discuss cycle, whenever an editor makes a bold contested change to a page and gets reverted, it is their duty to explain their change on the article talk page. If you haven't done so already, join the discussion at Talk:Kerala. Any form of further reverting does not help in any way and can only be interpreted as edit warring and disruptive editing. Remember the Three-revert rule which can get you blocked from editing.
- Atleast three of us have undone your edit and told you to join the discussion at the talk page. I'm telling you do it for the last time. We can discuss this issue there, editing here requires some form of patience. You asked for the right process to make changes, I just told you it. Sincerely, Ugog Nizdast (talk) 09:57, 28 November 2014 (UTC)
BJP
Hi there. As you're aware, I nominated the BJP page at GAN, and as we expected, nothing's happened in four months or more. I understand that you personally may feel too involved to do the review yourself; I was wondering, though, whether you could give it an informal look over, both for old issues and for new things that may have come up. I keep looking at it, but I'm a little too close to the subject matter, having produced most of the prose myself. If you're too busy at the moment, then no worries. Vanamonde93 (talk) 14:00, 3 December 2014 (UTC)
- Hey there, will be happy to look at it once again. Don't worry too much about your prose, GA standards requires only a decent level of it. There comes a point where you get so attached to your prose that you can't improve it further. How about posting a request at the Guild of Copy Editors (hope it gets answered)? I'll also do my informal inspection around the same time. Don't worry about your nomination though, just work on something else if you're too tired of it, you will get a reviewer eventually--there's always a large backlog. Best wishes, Ugog Nizdast (talk) 16:25, 3 December 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks friend. That's a good idea; I'll do that. I guess I didn't think of it partly because like many of the other members of the guild, I'm acutely aware of the backlog there as well. I have, actually, been spending my time on other things; I just returned to the page today, and realised it had been more than 4 months (which isn't that long, by GAN standards; a depressing thought!) and felt I shouldn't let it slide. Cheers, Vanamonde93 (talk) 17:16, 3 December 2014 (UTC)

Helpfulness trophy! | |
Hey thanks! I replied on my tallk page. I'd also like to add- one of my bold edits was regarding Bollywood- I was just Adding one of the few pictures that can tell that a some people in India are rich/lighter in complexion and or India is not totally underdeveloped, and has a little glitter and glamour. So I'd ask you to let me keep it! :) Also, I have edited easier pages that's why I'm allowed to edit a protected page! I have also earlier edited from college, home, cafe without a username ; that's why I seem to know how to add a file and other syntax- little more than a usual newcomer does :) Mousanonyy (talk) 16:48, 13 December 2014 (UTC) |

Thanks. I read every line of it after first Question by Sarvajna and then decided nothing objectionable in my edit and added references too. If you find anything objectionable,You are free to discuss in my talk page. Teja srinivas (talk) 19:00, 17 December 2014 (UTC)
- @Teja srinivas: Stop your edit warring and bring your edit for discussion to the article talk page. Your edit is problematic and you need to explain yourself, not undo other people's edits by force. -Ugog Nizdast (talk) 10:12, 18 December 2014 (UTC)

Trivandrum
Hi,
Please put back the "Largest and Capital City :Trivandrum" in Kerala page. This was the old text available and someone changed it just to Capital City. Can you please put it back. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 202.130.161.198 (talk) 09:07, 29 December 2014 (UTC)
- If I'm not wrong, that's already mentioned in the article body. I don't see any need for that to be added in the infobox. -Ugog Nizdast (talk) 12:51, 29 December 2014 (UTC)
- Can you please update the demographics section(not the tabular one, the details underneath) as well. Its showing largest/most populous city as Kochi. Hope that will make it consistent — Preceding unsigned comment added by 103.27.171.54 (talk) 04:30, 30 December 2014 (UTC)
- Wait a minute. What do you mean by "largest"? According to the 2001 census, Kochi is the most populous city. Or do you mean largest area-wise? I've made a minor correction here. Remember, according to our verifiability policy, you'll need to provide reliable sources to back up your changes. -Ugog Nizdast (talk) 13:59, 30 December 2014 (UTC)
According to india census data: http://censusindia.gov.in/2011-prov-results/paper2/data_files/India2/Table_2_PR_Cities_1Lakh_and_Above.pdf Trivandrum is the most populous city. 103.27.171.54 (talk) 08:51, 1 January 2015 (UTC)[1]

VisualEditor News 2015—#1
Since the last newsletter, the Editing Team has fixed many bugs and worked on VisualEditor's appearance, the coming Citoid reference service, and support for languages with complex input requirements. Status reports are posted on Mediawiki.org. Upcoming plans are posted at the VisualEditor roadmap.
The Wikimedia Foundation has named its top priorities for this quarter (January to March). The first priority is making VisualEditor ready for deployment by default to all new users and logged-out users at the remaining large Wikipedias. You can help identify these requirements. There will be weekly triage meetings which will be open to volunteers beginning Wednesday, 11 February 2015 at 12:00 (noon) PST (20:00 UTC). Tell Vice President of Engineering Damon Sicore, Product Manager James Forrester and other team members which bugs and features are most important to you. The decisions made at these meetings will determine what work is necessary for this quarter's goal of making VisualEditor ready for deployment to new users. The presence of volunteers who enjoy contributing MediaWiki code is particularly appreciated. Information about how to join the meeting will be posted at mw:Talk:VisualEditor/Portal shortly before the meeting begins.
Due to some breaking changes in MobileFrontend and VisualEditor, VisualEditor was not working correctly on the mobile site for a couple of days in early January. The teams apologize for the problem.
Recent improvements
The new design for VisualEditor aligns with MediaWiki's Front-End Standards as led by the Design team. Several new versions of the OOjs UI library have also been released, and these also affect the appearance of VisualEditor and other MediaWiki software extensions. Most changes were minor, like changing the text size and the amount of white space in some windows. Buttons are consistently color-coded to indicate whether the action:
- starts a new task, like opening the ⧼visualeditor-toolbar-savedialog⧽ dialog: blue ,
- takes a constructive action, like inserting a citation: green ,
- might remove or lose your work, like removing a link: red , or
- is neutral, like opening a link in a new browser window: gray.
The TemplateData editor has been completely re-written to use a different design (T67815) based on the same OOjs UI system as VisualEditor (T73746). This change fixed a couple of existing bugs (T73077 and T73078) and improved usability.
Search and replace in long documents is now faster. It does not highlight every occurrence if there are more than 100 on-screen at once (T78234).
Editors at the Hebrew and Russian Wikipedias requested the ability to use VisualEditor in the "Article Incubator" or drafts namespace (T86688, T87027). If your community would like VisualEditor enabled on another namespace on your wiki, then you can file a request in Phabricator. Please include a link to a community discussion about the requested change.
Looking ahead
The Editing team will soon add auto-fill features for citations. The Citoid service takes a URL or DOI for a reliable source, and returns a pre-filled, pre-formatted bibliographic citation. After creating it, you will be able to change or add information to the citation, in the same way that you edit any other pre-existing citation in VisualEditor. Support for ISBNs, PMIDs, and other identifiers is planned. Later, editors will be able to contribute to the Citoid service's definitions for each website, to improve precision and reduce the need for manual corrections.
We will need editors to help test the new design of the special character inserter, especially if you speak Welsh, Breton, or another language that uses diacritics or special characters extensively. The new version should be available for testing next week. Please contact User:Whatamidoing (WMF) if you would like to be notified when the new version is available. After the special character tool is completed, VisualEditor will be deployed to all users at Phase 5 Wikipedias. This will affect about 50 mid-size and smaller Wikipedias, including Afrikaans, Azerbaijani, Breton, Kyrgyz, Macedonian, Mongolian, Tatar, and Welsh. The date for this change has not been determined.
Let's work together
- Share your ideas and ask questions at mw:VisualEditor/Feedback.
- Please help complete translations of the user guide for users who speak your language.
- Join the weekly bug triage meetings beginning Wednesday, 11 February 2015 at 12:00 (noon) PST (20:00 UTC). Information about how to join the meeting will be posted at mw:Talk:VisualEditor/Portal shortly before the meeting begins. Contact James F. for more information.
- Talk to the Editing team during the office hours via IRC. The next session is on Thursday, 19 February 2015 at 19:00 UTC.

Problem regarding Amrita rao biography and all
hello I am tushar...i work for Amrita rao..as media expert her detail regarding her age and career are wrng..so iwant to update it..as i update it u change it..so please tell me what i have to do now — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tusharlove (talk • contribs) 11:40, 15 February 2015 (UTC)
- @Tusharlove: Hi. Your edit has several issues. The only thing acceptable in your edit is the new photograph addition. The rest with wording like "Amrita Rao at a young age and with no God Father.." and "She won our hearts through her striking performances.." is poor English, unsourced and promotional. Wikipedia is not a place for promoting who you work for.
- I suggest you read our policies and guidelines especially the ones mentioned on your talk page. If you want to make any changes, mention them on Talk:Amrita Rao and get consensus for them before adding it.
- Please don't undo continuously other user's edits without any valid reason, especially when they explain what was wrong with it. You have a conflict of interest and If you continue to edit war with us, I'm afraid I'll have to report you to the administrators and get you blocked from editing. Thank you. -Ugog Nizdast (talk) 09:20, 16 February 2015 (UTC)

- @Tusharlove:: First two basic things to learn will be using talk pages. Always end your replies by typing ~~~~ to sign it (this automatically produces your username and time of reply). Next, while replying to messages once always start with a ':', similarly twice use '::' etc to leave spaces/indent it. For example, see how I've arranged our above conversation. More information see WP:SIGN and WP:INDENT.
- Regarding the bio page, we'll continue the discussion there (Talk:Amrita Rao). -Ugog Nizdast (talk) 09:33, 17 February 2015 (UTC)

A week has passed and there is WP:SILENCE. Any plans for giving the GAN another go and telling Coemgenus? -Ugog Nizdast (talk) 09:31, 16 February 2015 (UTC)
- (ping) or to be on the safe side, notifying Calypsomusic about it one last time. -Ugog Nizdast (talk) 09:58, 17 February 2015 (UTC)
- Apologies, my friend, I've had no internet for a few days. I would be fine with notifying him again, but he has been raising these objections for months, with no policy and no reliable sources behind them; just stuff that he thinks should be there. Have a glance through the archives. Vanamonde93 (talk) 01:48, 19 February 2015 (UTC)
- Yes this has been on my watchlist. I know I have lesser experience in disputes than you but I feel we can keep trying. Editing here does require tremendous amounts of patience and will; unfortunately it's sometimes extremely easy for one editor (sometimes even with hardly any constructive contributions) to disrupt the hard work of others. That's the price of editing such important/controversial articles. Why do you think majority of the users stick to editing the easier less important/less controversial topics where they'll be left in peace?
- Consider this. I and Kautilya too gave CM the benefit of doubt, and I feel CM may have chosen to finally drop the stick. That's three of us, versus CM. Also there is nothing major stopping you criteria-wise right now from getting it to GA other than CM. So on your part, there's nothing much to do other than renominating it again.
- Now comes the part if CM chooses to disrupt the review again despite no response to our notification about SILENCE. Aren't there archives of this behaviour (even the past rfc), the GA2, plus us giving CM last chance. This is enough evidence, I feel, and falls under Wikipedia:Tendentious editing#Characteristics of problem editors. Take CM to the ANI; this amount of disruptive behaviour atleast deserves a warning. Hope it ends there. Repeat GAN. If it happens again, repeat ANI. I doubt you'll reach so far for this scenario. So what do you think? -Ugog Nizdast (talk) 15:23, 19 February 2015 (UTC)
- Perhaps you're right. Would you suggest ANI now, or only if he disrupts the next GAN? I would be open to either option, although it seems to me that ANI reports are better made soon after the incident? Vanamonde93 (talk) 05:03, 20 February 2015 (UTC)
- A notification concerning the silence first. If that is still contested, the onus is on CM to seek dispute resolution etc while the page remains at the WP:STATUSQUO version. If not, take it for GAN. Only then if CM disrupts again despite our previous notification, we go to the ANI. Good luck, Ugog Nizdast (talk) 10:24, 20 February 2015 (UTC)
- Alright, that makes sense. My issue is that I have no internet for a week after today. I will notify him, but wait to renominate until after. If he responds with policy based arguments, we can engage; but I'm not too hopeful. If he brings up his usual crap, well, there's three of us. Vanamonde93 (talk) 00:25, 21 February 2015 (UTC)

Declined 3O request
There was no thorough discussion on Talk:Russian tradition of the Knights Hospitaller because the other user reverted me and left only a vandalism template on my talk page, ignoring my reply on the article talk page. I will try to lure him back to the discussion page with a revert, but I prefer not to edit war. KateWishing (talk) 13:10, 21 February 2015 (UTC)
- Yes, you did everything well on your part. Though content-wise I haven't looked through the dispute, I see that your arguments are based on guidelines too. WP:DISCFAIL is an excellent essay on how to respond to a failure to discuss. Good luck. While you're at it, though I can't make any promises, I'll see later if I be of any help, becoming an involved editor since I obviously cannot put on my "3O hat" if there's limited discussion. Cigar Smoker of the Year Award
Hello, I disagree with your edit on the Cigar page. I suggest that the recently-established international Cigar Smoker of the Year Award goes to show the increasing popularity of cigar smoking and so should be left in as a sub-section. It shows its relevance in "popular culture" today. Manxwoman (talk) 20:12, 24 February 2015 (UTC)
- Hey there. I only weakly oppose those changes so feel free to undo my edit. I would have done that myself but one issue bothers me. The Spectator might not be the only one giving out such an award. It would be good if you found any more such notable awards. This would generalise that subsection and give room for expansion, rather than devoting it to just one specific magazine's award. Sincerely, Ugog Nizdast (talk) 21:25, 24 February 2015 (UTC)
- Good point, but as far as I can discover, it is the only international cigar smoker award. Manxwoman (talk) 20:05, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

Double Signpost delivery
I saw you removed yourself from the Signpost list because you got a double delivery. Just wanted to let you know I did too, and looking at a few other pages of those signed up, they did too. Must be a glitch with the bot. Cheers, DiscantX 11:48, 27 February 2015 (UTC)
- With everyone huh? I initially thought it was because of my double revert or something, thanks for notifying. But anyway, I switched over to just adding it to my dashboard as {{Signpost-subscription}} instead. Good day, Ugog Nizdast (talk) 11:55, 27 February 2015 (UTC)
- No problem, have a good one. DiscantX 12:05, 27 February 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for your considerate third opinion.
Hiya,
Just wanted to express my thanks for helping to defuse the roadblock over on Sheilla Jeffreys. Your consideration is much appreciated. Chocolate vittles (talk) 10:27, 4 March 2015 (UTC)
- @Chocolate vittles: No problem at all. And I hope you have a good learning/editing experience here now that you've newly registered. Feel free to post here if you need help with anything, Ugog Nizdast (talk) 10:32, 4 March 2015 (UTC)
Assessment of Sunil Kumar Verma
Hello Dear! First of all thanks for a beautiful Barnstar! You made me rich. I see that you have give an assessment rating to Lalji Singh and Sunil Kumar Verma. Could you please let me also know what criteria you use for the assessment? Is it final or can it be re assessed? I think both of the bio are at least not "Low" importance. Please re-consider. Thanks. Educationtemple (talk) 15:44, 5 March 2015 (UTC)
- @Educationtemple: The criteria used for it is detailed here. The article quality is the overall state of it and can be FA, A, GA (you're familiar with this), B, C, Start and Stub. The importance scale is its priority compared to all the articles of WikiProject India (i.e 1,45,937 articles right now[1]).
- I've looked again at both those articles. Regarding Lalji Singh, I had given it Mid-importance by looking at his achievements (Padma Shree.. etc) while I still feel Singh should stay low. Anyway, there are just three scales: High, mid and low (High would go to someone like say Jagadish Chandra Bose. Don't worry, the importance scale is just for a project's housekeeping and doesn't make much difference to the article.
- Of course, the assessment is not final. With the exception of GA and FA class, anyone, even you, can reassess it anytime if you're familiar with the criteria. The article quality can change later if someone improves it further (like how you made it a GA) while the importance scale may sometimes change if the subject gets even more notable (Like say, Aam Aadmi Party would not be as important as it is years ago).
- I assume you're familiar with Wikiproject India; if not, I formally invite you there...add this userbox, it will automatically add you to the members list. You've already made friends with so many editors, and you'll meet many more by joining WikiProjects :) -Ugog Nizdast (talk) 17:45, 5 March 2015 (UTC)
- Hello again. I got it. I would love to join. My PC is sick these days and I am struggling with my tiny phone screen to type the messages. But it would be all right. Many thanks for guidance.
- Do you have an idea if two dyk are possible for an article at diffent times, I.e. one before GA and another after GA? Sunil kumar verma made a dyk before it was GA since it is now GA and there is a good new hook I want to propose this. Views? Please. Educationtemple (talk) 18:13, 5 March 2015 (UTC)
- @Educationtemple: That is a really good question and I'm not so familiar with DYK. After a bit of digging, in the supplementary rules I found this "D1: Items that have been on DYK before (pre-expansion, for example) are ineligible." So I doubt a 'double DYK' is possible for a single article. However, if you want to really be sure about this you can ask some of those editors who have helped you before. If you need anything else, feel free to ask but will reply only tomorrow; I'm winding up my editing for today. Good day, Ugog Nizdast (talk) 18:46, 5 March 2015 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) I am fairly certain that once an article has appeared as a dyk, it cannot appear again. Vanamonde93 (talk) 22:23, 5 March 2015 (UTC)

Mention of Shia Muslims in Freedom of religion in India
i request you, not to vandalize, or clean the paragraph i improved giving links to it, in freedom of Religion in India. (encyclopedia) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 49.138.59.49 (talk) 09:15, 12 March 2015 (UTC)
- Have you read this? Rather than edit warring with me, you're suppose to discuss on the talk page.
- Have you read the article itself? Over there, it's already mentioned.
- All I said was it will be undue weight if mentioned in the lead section too. Have you read that too? It talks about the summary of religious violence without any examples, since they're given below. You suddenly want to keep the Shia Muslims example over there too for what reason? Can you cite any guideline or policy here?
- By the way, calling other editors "vandals" is the characteristic of a problematic editor, see here. -Ugog Nizdast (talk) 09:26, 12 March 2015 (UTC)
A bit of help needed
Hello once again Ugog Nizdast! Someone has randomly and even wrongly (he is abusing information in order to try using it against my favor) reported me here [1]. I know this has nothing to do with you and watching over articles, but words can't really describe how I would appreciate your help. Although I am not really that active, I don't feel I deserve to be banned just because someone is most of his report (if not all) using information the wrong way in order to use it against my favor. Of course, it is understandable if you don't have the time or will. --HistoryofIran (talk) 11:20, 15 March 2015 (UTC)
- I was first pleased to see my notification about you requesting me for something but I just read your actual message now. I am really sorry about your situation. I'm not familiar with the Arbcom or about how it works, just saw the instructions over there (WP:ARE); it says that only admins can comment there besides you and the nominator. So even If I wanted to, I'm really helpless at this point. I can only give you moral support and wish you luck with this. Hope everything turns out okay. Sincerely, Ugog Nizdast (talk) 14:01, 15 March 2015 (UTC)
VisualEditor News #2—2015
Since the last newsletter, the Editing Team has fixed many bugs and worked on VisualEditor's performance, the Citoid reference service, and support for languages with complex input requirements. Status reports are posted on Mediawiki.org. The worklist for April through June is available in Phabricator.
The weekly task triage meetings continue to be open to volunteers, each Wednesday at 11:00 (noon) PDT (18:00 UTC). You do not need to attend the meeting to nominate a bug for consideration as a Q4 blocker. Instead, go to Phabricator and "associate" the Editing team's Q4 blocker project with the bug. Learn how to join the meetings and how to nominate bugs at mw:Talk:VisualEditor/Portal.
Recent improvements
VisualEditor is now substantially faster. In many cases, opening the page in VisualEditor is now faster than opening it in the wikitext editor. The new system has improved the code speed by 37% and network speed by almost 40%.
The Editing team is slowly adding auto-fill features for citations. This is currently available only at the French, Italian, and English Wikipedias. Later, editors will be able to improve precision and reduce the need for manual corrections by contributing to the Citoid service's definitions for each website.
Citoid requires good TemplateData for your citation templates. If you would like to request this feature for your wiki, please post a request in the Citoid project on Phabricator. Include links to the TemplateData for the most important citation templates on your wiki.
The special character inserter has been improved, based upon feedback from active users. After this, VisualEditor was made available to all users of Wikipedias on the Phase 5 list on 30 March. This affected 53 mid-size and smaller Wikipedias, including Afrikaans, Azerbaijani, Breton, Kyrgyz, Macedonian, Mongolian, Tatar, and Welsh.
Work continues to support languages with complex requirements, such as Korean and Japanese. These languages use input method editors ("IMEs”). Recent improvements to cursoring, backspace, and delete behavior will simplify typing in VisualEditor for these users.
The design for the image selection process is now using a "masonry fit" model. Images in the search results are displayed at the same height but at variable widths, similar to bricks of different sizes in a masonry wall, or the "packed" mode in image galleries. This style helps you find the right image by making it easier to see more details in images.
You can now drag and drop categories to re-arrange their order of appearance on the page.
The pop-up window that appears when you click on a reference, image, link, or other element, is called the "context menu". It now displays additional useful information, such as the destination of the link or the image's filename. The team has also added an explicit "Edit" button in the context menu, which helps new editors open the tool to change the item.
Invisible templates are marked by a puzzle piece icon so they can be interacted with. Users also will be able to see and edit HTML anchors now in section headings.
Users of the TemplateData GUI editor can now set a string as an optional text for the 'deprecated' property in addition to boolean value, which lets you tell users of the template what they should do instead (T90734).
Looking ahead
The special character inserter in VisualEditor will soon use the same special character list as the wikitext editor. Admins at each wiki will also have the option of creating a custom section for frequently used characters at the top of the list. Instructions for customizing the list will be posted at mediawiki.org.
The team is discussing a test of VisualEditor with new users, to see whether they have met their goals of making VisualEditor suitable for those editors. The timing is unknown, but might be relatively soon.
