Okay, I've reviewed all names with up to four ASCII letters (plus apostrophe). — kwami (talk) 08:22, 22 January 2019 (UTC)
- That's good. I've checked a couple of random five-letter titles, one of which needed turning into a dab page. I don't think I'll have the time to help at this stage though. – Uanfala (talk) 14:58, 22 January 2019 (UTC)
Yeah, there are probably a lot of 5-letter names that should be dabs. But there are a lot to go through too. I figured I'd better take a smaller chunk if I hoped to get through the list. Probably easiest to use AWB to isolate the 5-letter names. — kwami (talk) 23:48, 22 January 2019 (UTC)
I filtered the list. There are 456 5-letter names (cf. to 170 shorter names). Maybe we can worry about longer ones if we get through this. I suspect the longer the name, the less likely it is to need a dab page. — kwami (talk) 00:33, 23 January 2019 (UTC)
- Well, I could take up maybe about a third of these to work on over the next couple of weeks. How should we partition the list so that we don't overlap? And wouldn't it be a bit clearer if we sort the list alphabetically? – Uanfala (talk) 01:36, 23 January 2019 (UTC)
Sure, alphabetize if you like. Remaining names only contain letters a-z now. I made a few dab pages for the diacritic-free forms of the ISO names. How about we put the 'under construction' tag on it when we're working on it? We could say in the edit summary if we're working on a particular section. Then delete from the list the ones we've checked, along w the tag? — kwami (talk) 02:58, 23 January 2019 (UTC)
- OK, sounds good. – Uanfala (talk) 03:15, 23 January 2019 (UTC)
Actually, I'll just temporarily post here when I'm working rather than flooding the list page history with my comments. — kwami (talk) 03:58, 23 January 2019 (UTC)
A lot few dab pages needed, percentage wise, for the 6-letter names than for 5-letter ones. Hopefully even fewer for 7-letter ones. — kwami (talk) 00:36, 27 January 2019 (UTC)
We should probably have ASCII variants of these pages, e.g. Tawende > Tawendê. — kwami (talk) 02:01, 27 January 2019 (UTC)
I left a few where I didn't know if we'd really want a dab page or not, since it seems unlikely the single word would be used for the other meaning. — kwami (talk) 07:00, 27 January 2019 (UTC)
8-letter names finished. These are getting easier and easier. The problems are mostly languages of the same name, language-ethnicity pairs, and languages linked to the wrong ethnicity and vice versa. — kwami (talk) 23:47, 27 January 2019 (UTC)
- Good. Do you think we could switch from "intitle" links to normal search links? This should help fish out topics that don't appear in the titles of articles or redirects: I think there are plenty of cases where "X language" redirects to "Y languages", whereas the "X people" are treated at "Y people" without there always being a redirect of the type "X people". – Uanfala (talk) 00:37, 28 January 2019 (UTC)
- Here's one example (this time the it's a spelling difference): intitle (only comes up with the language) vs. full-text search (also reveals the ethnicity article). – Uanfala (talk) 00:41, 28 January 2019 (UTC)
It would be wonderful if we could match up all the language and ethnology articles like that. I once did a bot search and found hundreds, but only for those with matching spellings in the title. It would be good to review all ISO and glottolog names, as well, and not just the remaining glottolog names.
For 'language'/'languages' rd's, those shouldn't normally need a dab page, though some might be errors. When a family is named after a member, we shouldn't need a dab page, because the family will be linked in the info box, and sources don't normally refer to a family with only the name of that member with no disambiguation.
9-letter names finished. I only needed to create a dozen dab pages for them, though nearly all of the accented names needed ASCII rd's. — kwami (talk) 08:18, 28 January 2019 (UTC)
In the page history, you'll find 10+-letter single-word names. I've done an 'in-title' search for them all, but not normal search. Currently in the list is multi-word names, excepting those containing compass directions and central/mid/middle, as those are unlikely to have matching ethno articles. Some of the others will -- Zotung Chin, for example (which got stranded in the one-word name list) -- both the lang and ethno articles were under the name 'Zotung', and 'Zotung Chin' applies to both. — kwami (talk) 04:47, 31 January 2019 (UTC)
- Among the list of redirects, there are a few where there's both a Foo (bar) targeting the langauge, and Foo, bar, which is an article about a place. There's five of them [1]: what's the best way to deal with them? – Uanfala (talk) 21:36, 12 February 2019 (UTC)
- OK, that's done. I've dabified the following: Sanga (Nigeria), Pana (Burkina Faso), Maba (Indonesia), Kono (Nigeria), and Bali (Nigeria). – Uanfala (talk) 00:23, 17 February 2019 (UTC)
