Tips
  • Don't be afraid to edit! Just find something that can be improved and make it better. Other editors will help fix any mistakes you make.
  • It's normal to feel a little overwhelmed, but don't worry if you don't understand everything at firstโ€”it's fine to edit using common sense.
  • If an edit you make is reverted, you can discuss the issue at the article's talk page. Be civil, and don't restore the edit unless there is consensus.
  • Always use edit summaries to explain your changes.
  • When adding new content to an article, always include a citation to a reliable source.
  • If you wish to edit about a subject with which you are affiliated, read our conflict of interest guide and disclose your connection.
  • Have fun! Your presence in the Wikipedia community is welcome.

Well spotted. We have a name for that kind of poor wikilink: see WP:EGG. --๐•๐•„๐”ฝ (talk) 15:26, 17 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Typo team, Guild of Copy Editors

[edit]

When you feel ready, you might want to investigate Wikipedia:Typo Team and Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors. I don't know anything about the former: like The Borrowers, they are only evident by their work. I used the services of the GoCE to clean up an article that I was working up to GA standard: I thought it was already in pretty good shape but was shaken by how many errors they found.

Just FYI, no expectations, entirely your call. ๐•๐•„๐”ฝ (talk) 15:54, 19 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, thanks for notifying! I have just joined. TypoEater (talk) 16:56, 19 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Collab?

[edit]

Hello @TypoEater, I hope you are doing good. I am reaching you out here after finding your name on the Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/List of participants. I am currently working and looking for help regarding the copyedit works for the Assembly constituencies of Andhra Pradesh under the section Cleanup on my user page:User:456legend. The status of the copyediting and other things are available on the legend part. If you are interested in joining this cleanup drive please ping/tag me here or on my talk page. Thank you. 456legend(talk) 17:06, 19 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for reaching out. As mentioned on my user page I am a casual editor. I fix things on pages I find, but I am less interested in joining a formal copy editing drive. If there is a really messy page message me though! TypoEater (talk) 17:13, 19 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@TypoEater Okay I understand the point. You can instead help in fixing the tables if possible. Anyways Thank you and sorry for the inconvenience. Happy editing. 456legend(talk) 17:29, 19 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@456legend:, if you meant the error where you invoked {{Woking}} instead of {{working}}, I have just fixed that. If not, I think you need to be more specific as to which problem where. More generally, the GoCE almost never does user pages, there is far too much to do in main space. ๐•๐•„๐”ฝ (talk) 19:19, 19 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@John Maynard Friedman oh no sorry I didn't meant that. I was actually referring to the pages/articles that are on the list that needs to get copyedited. For eg: the ones I marked as done are done with the ce and those notdone and other categories needs to be addressed. (I was not referring to the mistake on my user page... sorry if my statement was confusing) 456legend(talk) 19:25, 19 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, and a suggestion

[edit]

Hello, TypoEater, and thanks for your work. The kind of small-scale corrections and improvement of details that you are doing tends to go without receiving acknowledgement, but it is a very useful contribution to improving the encyclopaedia. However, there is one edit of yours that I have seen and which I would like to suggest changing. In the article Sicherman dice you added a hidden comment suggesting that an editor should retarget the link to the redirect normal dice if that redirect gets deleted at WP:RFD. The trouble with that is simply that in my experience over my 13 years of editing, such hidden comments almost always simply lie there for years on end without anyone taking action, no doubt at least in part because not many people see them. I have two suggestions for other ways of dealing with this situation, one or other of which you may like to consider doing. Firstly, you can add the redirect page, or the deletion discussion, or both, to your watch list, and if you see that the discussion has resulted in deletion of the redirect then retarget the link yourself. Secondly, you can retarget the link right now; since readers clicking on the link will be taken to the same article anyway, there's really no advantage in linking indirectly through a redirect rather than directly to the target article. (And yes, I do know all the stuff that people say about keeping a link to a redirect in case it ever becomes an article, and similar stuff, but I really don't see any serious prospect of that in this case.) Hi TypoEater, thanks for your contributions โ˜บ๏ธ It's really not necessary, five minutes after a Help Desk request is posted, to respond that you don't know. If something has sat for twelve or more hours, then it might be helpful for the questioner to receive a non-answer response to help them feel heard, and I understand you probably didn't see 331dot's correct response just before yours since you were using the Reply Tool. Kindly, Folly Mox (talk) 17:16, 5 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, sorry, I was just replying to it. Also maybe consider leaving new talk page messages in new topics instead of ones that already exist? Because I was very confused why I got a reply to a thread from 2 months ago. Best regards, TypoEater (talk) 19:05, 5 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message

[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:38, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Maugham and edit warring

[edit]

Please don't edit war on the text at W. Somerset Maugham, as you have done earlier today. I reverted your change the other day (when you erroneously described the usage as "grammar/terminology error", which it obviously isn't). I did so because, as it stands, the sentence is both grammatically correct and clear in meaning and intent. It caused no confusion when it went through the two in-depth review processes and only one person in the intervening 18 months (including from the over 70,000 people who looked at it over the three-day period when the link was on the front page) thought they should change it when it appeared on the front page: can you guess who that was? While you may be confused by the term, its meaning is clear and it is entirely correct. โ€“ SchroCat (talk) 18:00, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I am sorry that I did not realize that the word "celebrity" can be used like that. I still believe it could be confusing to some readers and that changing it to "became a national celebrity" wouldn't hurt anything, but I apologize for the misclassification.
