Welcome!

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! By the way, you can sign your name on Talk and vote pages using three tildes, like this: ~~~. Four tildes (~~~~) produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome! --Ragib 28 June 2005 22:52 (UTC)

The article says "shaved except for a few inches in the center of the lip". That seems to suggest that there several inches worth of moustache, but I don't think you can two inches and still call it a toothbrush moustache. A few centimetres seems more like it, or "barely more than an inch". Maybe you can come up with something better? Rl 09:51, 24 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Gerundive

[edit]

I haven't been able to find any evidence for the '-anda' gerundive, and I must admit I can't recall seeing it very often. Maybe I just remembered something wrong. However, the '-inda' gerundive definitely exists and is widely used. A reference is http://www.lernu.net/seppik/lec19.php#151 (sometimes links to specific pages on lernu.net don't work very well - tell me if this is the case). Gingekerr 15:11, 21 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, I see. I've actually never seen that word used as a suffix before, but now that I look, every reference I know has it as such. Not sure it's really a "gerundive," per se, though, any more than the english suffix "-able" or "-worthy" is a gerundive, especially since it exists as a root on its own - it seems more like word building than a tense. Twin Bird 16:38, 21 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I edited the Esperanto section of gerundive and corrected the spelling of -and- to -end-. I saw no hoax. -end- is by far the rarest of the four forms -ot-, -ebl-, -ind-, and -end-. It was not originally part of the language and there was some resistance to its use, but it has, I believe been officially accepted by the Academy of Esperanto. I don't have the date handy, but will add it later -- if s/o doesn't beat me to it. The term gerundive is not used by Esperanto grammarians for this. These 'gerundives' are indeed not tenses, but rather de-verbal adjectives. They may be re-verb-ized and tensed (examples here are present tense, but the other tenses are all, of course, ok):
   estas farota  = farotas  = (is) (going) to be done (official future passive voice);
   estas farebla = fareblas = (is) do-able;
   estas farinda = farindas = (is) worth doing, merits being done;
   estas farenda = farendas = (is) a must, must be done.
Perhaps it is obvious from the definitions, but the suffixes -ot-, ebl-, -ind-, and -end- may only be used with transitive verbs -- in all other cases they are considered non-sensical.
My own experience with the term 'gerundive' is in Tigrinya (ti) grammar (Eritrea), where it does indeed refer to a tense, often used in conjunction with other verbs with the net meaning 'having done'.
Since the article defined it as a 'verbal adjective' with the gloss 'needs or deserves', I saw no problem there. --Oryanw 01:31, 29 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The history of the burger king

[edit]

To understand his affair with boorke brookes You must under stand his long and complicated life. Back when the burger king was just a burger prince... His father was his father was gunned down by the Mcdonalds. This was to start a major mob war lasting 20 years. You see he is actualy Burger the II. Anyways after taking over his fathers bussiness he soon married the Dairy Queen. Thier relation ship was jipped from the start. He was lossing the war whith mcdonald, And many rival familys were coming into play. Any ways he found his wife eating at subway. (she was trying to lose wait to impress him.) He wasnt amused. He said he would rather have a fat wife than a triaitor and killed her. The police say it was brian cancer but i remain scepticle. Any ways after that and the killing of his nephew. ( the hamburgler,) the war ended. I have to go I will finish the story later. MegaloManiac 13:47, 13 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ok part 2. You see the Hamburelur was a spy for the burger king. So any ways after the Mob war The king started to do commercials for his kingdom. It was pretty succesful exept for the rumors of him being gay. So he screwed Brook Burke so the rumors would go away. See? simple. MegaloManiac 18:13, 13 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm Massachusetts resident Merlinus... Did you ever learn where Barnstable was... Its about 2 hours from where I live out on Cape Cod ... If you look on a map and see Hyannis (Kennedy Place) your not too far off. Hope that helps... --merlinus 23:57, 13 April 2006 (UTC)Merlinus--merlinus 23:57, 13 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Um...I know where Barnstable is. Twin Bird 03:46, 14 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Massachusets: Suggestion: Try to focus on facts in the very begiing of the article: Why not instead name our states flower "Mayflower" Its Motto: "By the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty" Its state bird "The Chickadee." Its Highest Point: Mt. Greylock; 3491 feet... Its loose and ungainly and one would have to push a dozen links and read a lot of garbage to learn the most minor facts about Massachusetts. --merlinus 17:53, 14 April 2006 (UTC)Merlinus--merlinus 17:53, 14 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What are you talking about? I've never even edited Massachusetts. (By the way, I now see what you meant by "did you ever learn where Barnstable was"...very funny.) Twin Bird 00:58, 15 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Pregnant Ranma problem

[edit]

Greetings, fellow bunny. I'm afraid I reverted your contribution to the mentioned article, and should explain myself. As the talk page shows, the article until recently had some examples of pregnancy in other fiction - including EGS.

The problem was, and is, that it simply was irrelevant. The article is about a "pregnant Ranma problem" as a story analyzation concept, not about shapeshifter fertility. Furthermore, a PRB is a plot device not intended to bear close inspection, while pregnancy in EGS is addressed directly and in detail, which means it's definitely not one. I don't see a way for the EGS info to add to the readers' understanding of the article subject, or even to have much of anything to do with it.

If you disagree, I'm open to discussion. Sorry about this. --Kizor 19:47, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding this; number one, I don't think other editors like to be insulted, number two, "Colbert" has Irish origins also... if you read the article you would have known that. ~ clearthought 18:52, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there. I've just prodded Day by Day, an article you created a while back. As far as I could tell, it didn't meet the web content notability guidelines set out in WP:WEB. If there's something I'm missing, feel free to add it to the article and to remove the prod tag. Cheers! --Brad Beattie (talk) 01:23, 12 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Improve, don't remove

[edit]

When a statement has a source, even if the way is written is not according to policy, it is better to improve the statement to be more in line with the source than remove it. Moreover, even a trivial bit of research could have turned up non-weasely sources for the same basic statement. Also, please do not blindly edit-war. If someone reverts your change, try to engage them on the subject before reverting it back. i kan reed (talk) 19:17, 11 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hoo! This page was getting cold and lonely over the years. The fact that the item I was removing amounted to a one-sentence attack on a political movement suggests that there wasn't much room for improvement, especially since more thoroughly supported, similar complaints about that same political movement appeared elsewhere on the same page. I'm not going to go around "improving" an attempt to put out that the Tea Party is astroturf. Twin Bird (talk) 19:32, 11 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ignoring the fact that the claim is not without merit, reliable sources are king, and blindly removing things without even considering incorporating the sources elsewhere is not good for the accuracy and health of any article. i kan reed (talk) 19:40, 11 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

File:LocationScotland.png needs authorship information

[edit]
Dear uploader:

The media file you uploaded as File:LocationScotland.png appears to be missing information as to its authorship (and or source), or if you did provide such information, it is confusing for others trying to make use of the image.

It would be appreciated if you would consider updating the file description page, to make the authorship of the media clearer.

Although some images may not need author information in obvious cases, (such where an applicable source is provided), authorship information aids users of the image, and helps ensure that appropriate credit is given (a requirement of some licenses).

  • If you created this media yourself, please consider explicitly including your user name, for which: {{subst:usernameexpand|Twin Bird}} will produce an appropriate expansion,
    or use the {{own}} template.
  • If this is an old image, for which the authorship is unknown or impossible to determine, please indicate this on the file description page.
If you have any questions please see Help:File page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 15:22, 29 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help.
