Disambiguation link notification for July 16
[edit]Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited John Brickell, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Native Americans (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Copy edit of Women's Action Alliance
[edit]Hi Triangleman3! Thanks for your copy edits this month. I was also working on Women's Action Alliance. I'd commented the {{copy edit}} tag about 20 minutes before your edit (but maybe you were already working on it at that time). It's okay, the occasional edit conflict happens with these drives, especially when we get toward the end and there's a smaller number of articles to choose from.
Generally, there are two things that we do to try to avoid such conflicts:
- Remove the copy edit tag when starting a copy edit. I know that some rules and guidelines say to only do that after finishing the copy edit, but we tend to ignore that on GOCE drives. Taking the tag off means it won't show up in the category so other copy editors won't see it as needing copy edit. If you also list it as a {{working}} article on your drive list, then in case there's any problem and you have to abandon the copy edit (e.g.: if you suddenly get busy and can't finish or even log in to tell anyone) the coordinators will see that it's incomplete at the end of the month and reinstate the tag.
- Check the "view history" of the article to see if anyone else is already copy editing it. Generally, you only have to look for the month of the drive, see if an edit summary mentions copy editing or "ce".
I'll try to add some of my copy edit on top of yours, so it should be in really great shape with two reviews!
Thanks again, and please keep up the good work! – Reidgreg (talk) 19:26, 28 July 2018 (UTC)

Basketball Wives LA season 6
[edit]There's no season 6 of this show. The only citation for it is Wikipedia and IMDB, and the information on the page was for Basketball Wives (no LA) season 6. Reverted. --2601:CC:4200:1D00:6452:BDDA:B1E2:14C9 (talk) 20:57, 7 August 2018 (UTC)

Copy edit notes
[edit]Nice copy edit of Al-Qaeda! You smoothed out a lot of tone issues which newer copy editors tend to miss. If you haven't come across them already, you can find some advice about long articles at WP:LENGTH and WP:SPLITSIZE. FYI, I'll briefly mention a couple minor MOS points:
in the Soviet-Afghan war
Because this is Soviet vs Afghan, this should have an en-dash (instead of a hyphen) to show separation or opposition. These most often get en dashes, but watch our for something like Sino-Japanese Wars or Franco-German war which get hyphens because Sino- and Franco- are combining forms. In the 1990's
. Although some style guides recommend apostrophes for plurals of acronyms and numbers, Wikipedia doesn't want to confuse this with a possessive; so this should be 1990s (MOS:DECADE). At the end there was a "mid 2014" which gets a hyphen as "mid" is a combining form ("late 2014" wouldn't get a hyphen).- There were a few curly quotes which I straightened (MOS:CURLY). One has to be a little cautious with an article like this, though, as sometimes apostrophes are used in place of Arabic accent characters.
Qatar’s has also provided support to al-Qaeda through the countries largest NGO
→ Qataris provided support to al-Qaeda through the country's largest NGO- Legal cases get italics: the trial United States vs. Enaam M. Arnaout.
- I changed U.S. → US for consistency.
It usually takes me a couple editing sessions to do an article of this size, which can test my concentration. Time permitting, I find it useful to come back after taking a break for a day or two, and I'll often catch a few simple but overlooked mistakes.
Barnstars should be awarded shortly. – Reidgreg (talk) 12:22, 27 August 2018 (UTC)

The Copy Editor's 10K Star | ||
This barnstar is awarded to Triangleman3 for copy-editing at least one individual article of more than 10,000 words during the most recent Guild of Copy Editors' Drive or Blitz. Congratulations, and thank you for your contributions! Reidgreg (talk) 22:04, 27 August 2018 (UTC) |
Great work on a long and controversial article! The 10k is one of my favourite barnstars. It takes a lot of concentration to tackle these articles, as issues tend to compound with article length. 10,000 words is in excess of the maximum recommended article size, and so definitely deserves special recognition. Well done! – Reidgreg (talk) 22:04, 27 August 2018 (UTC)
Halcyon TV series "Promotional" material
[edit]I'm a little confused, so please explain how it is promotional:
- Adding second VR device (GearVR) mentioned on series homepage (only two are)? And if it is, then why Oculus Rift doesn't count?
- Adding info about episodes length? What that promotes?
- Adding info that series is free (this might be a promotion) to watch on its homepage (this also might be a promotion of its page). If it were free to watch on ex. Netflix (or Youtube), does this count as a promotion too (probably yes)?
Does mentioning that something is available for free (or on its homepage) is not allowed on Wikipedia? --89.25.210.104 (talk) 20:44, 2 September 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks for the replay, that explains number 3. But what about 2 (this may be unsourced material or original research, but promotion?) and 1 (why promoting Oculus Rift is ok, but adding GearVR is not?). --89.25.210.104 (talk) 14:59, 3 September 2018 (UTC)
- I've added new informations (probably in need of rewording) from the source I found. I hope that sentence "through the paid Halcyon VR app" (or the source itself) isn't a promotion. :) --89.25.210.104 (talk) 22:11, 3 September 2018 (UTC)
- 1. I don't feel comfortable enough with English language to write full (long) sentences in articles.
- 2. From my point of view (or what I meant in full? sentences):
"available online in 80 countries" is a statement which is suggesting to the reader that they will be able to purchase the product in their country.
- And what's wrong with that? Almost all digital content can be purchased in almost all countries by default, except cases in which publisher blocks content for some regions, or even all regions except one. To be fair, "80 countries" doesn't mean much without their list.
- For me, it is suggesting that I can watch episodes on the show page, maybe even (promotion alert!) for free, which is uncommon (or maybe it isn't, but I will never know that from Wikipedia - promotion), and it may be translated (subbed/dubbed) in several native languages. It may sound very promotional, but so does any other information (ex. plot description, use of VR devices, actors, website, etc.).
"through the paid Halcyon VR app" might be promotional in that it is alerting the reader that they can go to the website and buy the product.
- For me, it only alerts that VR part is paid, but episodes may not be (business model). --89.25.210.104 (talk) 20:19, 4 September 2018 (UTC)
(After visiting page again) How about adding only the length of the episodes then?
Example of how I completely don't understand the promotion thing (rant alert):
I have no idea how articles about TV series are on Wikipedia at all - because information about a show existence (and its plot) is a promotion too: "might be promotional in that it is alerting the reader that" the show exist and "they can go to the" google search, find the "website and buy the product" (or the reader could also just don't bother with all that by adding right away to a google search word "online"). --89.25.210.104 (talk) 14:49, 11 September 2018 (UTC)

October copy editing blitz
[edit]For this month's one-week copy-editing blitz, there is a theme of:
- Requests
- Food and drink articles tagged for copy edit
- Geography articles tagged for copy edit
There is a list of articles in a collapse box at the blitz page. We've done biography articles as a theme for some blitzes in the past, but unfortunately Ignacio Aguaded doesn't count for this blitz. Sorry for any confusion. – Reidgreg (talk) 20:27, 14 October 2018 (UTC)
- Uh oh! It seems I've improved wikipedia for nothing then! Best, Triangleman3 (talk) 22:54, 14 October 2018 (UTC)
