Hi there. I was hoping you could take a look at Gerry McNamara and let me know what you think needs to be improved. I've noticed you've participated in a lot of articles that have been bumped up to "Good Article" status, so I wanted an outside opinion. Thanks. Chengwes 20:26, 1 September 2007 (UTC)
Re image removal
I removed the image per a WP:NFCC nomination. (speedy delete tag) βcommand 02:52, 2 September 2007 (UTC)
- Let me make a few points clear. IFD is not the place for NFCC images that dont pass NFCC. That is why we have image speedy tags. (they are not really "speedy" they are a 7 days) Two an un-deletion is not the proper method. if you have a dispute about the image being deleted please take that to WP:DRV. (oh and as a side note I did not delete that image. and im not an admin) βcommand 02:11, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
- As I pointed out on BC's talk page, there is a image that does the same thing on the Commons already. The image in question is at Image:US-IL-Chicago-CA.png. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 02:26, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
Re:Geo box
No problem with the geo box, I was just doing a few additions to it now. To get to your image question, are you looking for something that is a little sharper than that image? Do you want to try and make it more uniform as we are doing with the township maps such as Marion Township, Ogle County, Illinois? I can ask dan to see if he could do something like that if you wish. Also, anytime you are going for GA on something, let me know. I don't keep too close of an eye on all the Chicago pages, but I will try to offer copyedits and whatnot when you are going for GAs and stuff. Let me know.--Kranar drogin 16:45, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

Would it at least be possible for the bot that adds the WP:Chi banner to pages that have added a Chicago-related category to put {{ChicagoWikiProject|class= |importance= }} it make things a bit easier? Speciate 06:02, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

I changed the cat to baseball navigational boxes. Should've done that in the first place. I was tired, what can I say. :) I think I thought that the template you added was baseball navigational boxes instead of what you actually added. Apologies. Template discussion
Strange how more people are not participating in the Syracuse 02-03 Championship template discussion. That being said, I wanted to point out something about your statement concerning: "[A] large number of team members fail WP:N." I can certainly agree with that, although with this particular Syracuse team, I think that all of the players, (even Matt Gorman), pass WP:N. All of them have played in a professional league (Pace, Forth, Anthony, Duany, McNamara, McNeil, Warrick), or represented Team USA (as was the case with Gorman) or have had notable college career (Edelin) in and of themselves to warrant inclusion into Wikipedia. Not all championship teams may qualify under this, but given this team's success following college, it seems they do pass WP:N. Chengwes 16:35, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
- My standard for inclusion into that template was whether a player was on scholarship, and it just so happens that every player that was on a scholarship on that team passed WP:N. I omitted the walk-ons from the template. Chengwes 20:42, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
- Do the missing 5 players pass WP:N? You'd be surprised what you might find on them with a Google search. Perhaps they have gone on to play professionally in a fully-sanctioned professional league in Europe or even in the United States (such as the USBL, CBA or ABA). Maybe you can just add them based on that so you don't have redlinks. Or, you can add them, and you could argue that since they've played at the college level, which is the "highest level in amateur sports," they could be included just for having played Div-I basketball.[1] Are the missing 5 players walk-ons or scholarship players? If they're just walk-ons, maybe just omit them like I did. As for whether they are scholarship players or not, now adays, you can tell whether a player is on scholarship or not if they are in Scout.com or Rivals.com, which lists whether they were offered a scholarship. For example, here is the incoming class at Syracuse.[2] Hope that helps. Chengwes 21:09, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
Assessment push for Illinois
I don't know if you have been noticing, but I have assesed about 1300 articles now with many Chicago related ones in there. If my assessments for Chicago as far as "importance" aren't right, go ahead and change them. I have simply been putting down Low unless I have heard of the person or place. Places usually get "Mid". I tried getting with the Chicago assessment guy, but seems he must be busy. To get a full scale of what has been done so far, you can check out our Assessment page and the bot there will show you what all articles have changed as far as ratings. I am also assisting a new Illinois member with Naperville, Illinois, and am thinking of changing the template from the Chicago one to the Geobox City since I feel that the template is very outdated. Maybe you could get a geobox Chicago created. That might be a thought.--Kranar drogin 17:26, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

I just got this really great book full of pictures from the Great Chicago Fire, well, before and after the fire. Most of the images seem to be owned by the Chicago Historical Society, and some owned by the Chicago Fire Department, Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago Public Library and a few other collections. Since most of these are well past 1923? I think it is, or just PD-Old, I would be willing to scan these and post to the Commons if you wish. Let me know, I have to talk it over with Ivo also to make sure I am not breaking any copyrights, but with the fire being over 130 years ago, I think I should be ok (PD-Old being 70 years). Let me know if you are interested.--Kranar drogin 15:52, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
- I'm going to contact the Chicago HS just to let them know what I intend to do just incase they already have the images scanned to the internet. There was another guy Ivo told me to contact, so I am going to do that also just to make sure I use all the right stuff when posting them (again, don't want to cause much trouble). Its going to take awhile, I'll prolly scan, then use The Commonist to post them all at the same time. I'll keep you informed when I do so. There are a lot.--Kranar drogin 22:25, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
Registered Historic places in Illinois
I am currently working on a new feature list for the Illinois project. You can see it as I am working on it on my page, which will be plopped onto List of Registered Historic Places in Illinois. I would like to add Cook County's to the list, but they have a seperate page to work in. I was hoping you could assist me by converting List of Registered Historic Places in Cook County, Illinois into the fields that I am using and adding them to the main list. If you don't have time, I understand. Was just looking for a way to help speed the process up. Then we will have to stub out all these places when we get the time. Thanks if you can assist.--Kranar drogin 02:37, 10 September 2007 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:20070520 Lifesize Darth Vader at Lego Store.JPG)
Thanks for uploading Image:20070520 Lifesize Darth Vader at Lego Store.JPG. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 05:55, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
Re:New Cats
Well, I don't know which ones you are talking about?? But I will just assume that they are Cook County city ones, which I have been developing. Basically any city that has more than three locations with further growth expected (especially with all the historic places that are going to be stubbed), are going to get their own category. So, when I finally get to stubbing all these articles, expect to see a lot more I would say.--Kranar drogin 22:51, 11 September 2007 (UTC)

John Mills Van Odsel
No article appears to exist. As the architect of the Illinois Executive Mansion I would think him notable. I can see what I can dig up. I am seeing a couple of academic references on JSTOR, I will log in and see what else there is. You could write him up if you want, I can always just email you the PDFs of the database articles I find. IvoShandor 18:06, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
- Okay, a quick search reveals:
- His name is John M. Van Osdel, not Van Odsel, so the two references that come up on wikipedia are incorrectly spelled, that's the mansion above and Tremont House (Chicago).
- A Wiki Search on the correct name reveals mutliple mentions of the man.
- There seems to be some disagreement about what the "M" in his name stands for, either "Mills" or "Murray". I will see what the peer reviewed sources say, they are better for determining this kind of thing.
- A look at JSTOR under the correct name reveals quite a few peer reviewed journal hits. It will take awhile to read through them all for relevance.
- He's been called Chicago's first architect.

Let me start off by stating I will not be changing my 'vote' from Iffy-delete at this time, but this is simply because I am only at the 80% level of certainty, too far below what I feel safe for keeping an article. However, let me state something with a bit of a positive nature: of all the spam-article candidates I have dealt with, this is the first where I even had any doubts. You are obviously an accomplished editor, probably a mark or two above myself, and have done your fair share of improving Wikipedia. (My doubts only come from my concern that -statistically speaking- there must be Wikipedians that have lower standards than my own as to what notability entails, and that such standards may allow for for-hire article writing. In that regard, you're the first that was obviously well camouflaged, if you are indeed such a writer.) I don't understand why you're so passionate about this article, but your passion is positive in nature, you weathered the initial storm of dis-trust (mine included) very well and have honestly and maturely sought to improve the article to the higher standards emplaced by the levels of suspicion. So, because you have my 80% level of trust, I wish to thank you for your dedication, and urge you to "plow a straight furrow right down to the end of the row." (John C. It is fairly normal process to move items over 5 days old to the expired section. This does not prevent their selection, and it is fairly common for items in the expired section which have resolved outstanding issues to be selected during an update. Yeah, to me anyway, fighting to change the system is a lost hope. There is such a powerful group of individuals who don't feel like they are wrong one bit that are preventing us from coming to any reasonable conclusion as to what to do. Personally, I think that the system now is all right. Yes, it's totally ridiculous, but I'm thankful that Raul wasn't a complete dick about it by just eliminating the requests entirely.
So in response to your message, I would say that first of all I haven't been actively editing for a while now. I'll start back up eventually, but for now, I don't feel I have been around recently so sense the continuation of a problem. And second, I don't know if I would be willing to stand my ground on this issue once again. Perhaps, if a compelling proposal was made with significant backing, but right now, that is how I stand. I do thank you very much for the message, and hope you keep posting me about the goings on of a possible proposal. Jared (t) 22:25, 15 September 2007 (UTC)

Sheridan Road
Hi Tony. Given your recent excellent work on Rush Street I wonder whether you have access to sources that might be able to answer this question. The Sheridan Road article states that "Sheridan Road was original approved by Congress (circa 1832) as a military road from Fort Dearborn in Chicago to Fort Howard in Green Bay, Wisconsin". There is citation for this, however, all other sources that I can find give Clark Street as following the former route of the military road out of Chicago (e.g. [3]). From Chicago and through Evanston it seems that the course of the road was Ridge [4]. North of Evanston I thought the route followed Green Bay Road, although Green Bay Road and Sheridan intermingle in places. In addition I was browsing a book about Highland Park at the weekend that stated that Sheridan Road through Highland Park was laid out in 1899. Any ideas? Thanks, —Jeremy (talk) 02:12, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

Re: Categories
Maintaining both lists is sort of tedious. I feel that the list with the outline structure is duplicating the actual structure of categories, and I don't refer to it. Rather, I look at the parent category, and the subcategories are listed there. The botlist is nice because it represents the truth about what categories the Chicago Wikipoject is keeping tabs on. The outline list has all those railroads which it doesn't appear anybody in the Chicago Wikiproject cares about. In fact, nobody seems to care about categories at all. So I guess eliminating the outline list is fine. Speciate 07:47, 19 September 2007 (UTC)
Campbell's Soup Cans
Hey, the Message section of the article [5] has a lot of unencyclopedic language, for example: His series work helped him escape Lichtenstein’s lengthening shadow and the mundane Campbell’s Soup Cans gave the art world a chill. I was wondering if you should reword those? Thanks! Tommy Stardust 15:51, 19 September 2007 (UTC)
Re: Sep 11 expired noms
The article in question was in the DYK section of the main page for a non-trivial length of time and is listed in the YK archive. As such, I have reverted the removal of the {{dyktalk}} template from the article's talk page. As to the question of the article returning for a second go, there is currently a surplus of nominations in relation to available space and I will not second guess the reasoning of the contributors who selected the articles for the remainder of that day's updates. --Allen3 talk 18:28, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

Copied from Wikipedia:Deletion review/Content review request
- I was notified that between 2007-09-15 and 2007-09-18 Toni Preckwinkle was deleted. Although it had a {{ChicagoWikiProject}} on its talk page, WP:CHICAGO was never informed of any WP:AFD. I see an old AFD debate at Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Toni_Preckwinkle (closed at 07:13, 13 Mar 2005), but know the article was recreated and stood for some time. Can I see any more recent AFD debate as well as the contents at the time of deletion before considering a WP:DRV.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 16:21, 19 September 2007 (UTC)
- Done Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Toni Preckwinkle (2nd nomination). You can find AfDs by using the What links here function, even for deleted pages. You can read the deleted text at Google. There are many news articles mentioning her and a few books as well. DRV would be a good bet. -- Jreferee T/C 07:59, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
User talk:TonyTheTiger/Toni Preckwinkle
I userfied the article at User talk:TonyTheTiger/Toni Preckwinkle per your request at here. Your best bet is to first gather all the reliable source articles in chronological order into one Microsoft word document, create a footnote for each reliable source article, then build the Toni Preckwinkle article one footnoted sentence at a time using the reliable source article material in chronological order. Best wishes. -- Jreferee T/C 16:26, 22 September 2007 (UTC)
- The deletion of the Preckwinkle article came as a surprise to me. I think it can be rescued in spite of the unfortunate precedent that makes people delight in deleting councilpeople. See my note below about working on pages in userspace as long as it takes. Speciate 05:32, 24 September 2007 (UTC)
- An alderman needs sources showing notability. Each Chicago aldermen represents 56,666 people. I think you are right, some 20 of the current ones are notable for something, even if it is for getting indicted. Ideally, if they are the subject of an article in a newspaper outside of Chicago, they are notable. Speciate 21:50, 24 September 2007 (UTC)
Four birds, one stone
I came up with an idea that might help solve a few of our problems at once. When a Chicago Collaboration of the Week is proposed for a topic that has no existing page, we could create it and work on it outside the mainspace, in the project space or the user page of its nominator, for instance. That way we can get it mostly finished before moving it to the mainspace and submitting it for a DYK. This avoids conflict over the CCotW banner being on the page while being reviewed for DYK, and gives us as long as it takes to build the page without that annoying 5 day time limit. Also, if it proves to be an unpopular CCotW, it can be left to those who do care about it and the next CCotW chosen. What do you think? I'm thinking of implementing it for my latest nominee, Chicago Dramatists, if it gets passed over for CCotW, as a demonstration. Speciate 05:27, 24 September 2007 (UTC)

I've updated {{ChicagoWikiProject}} to add a "class=list" parameter, and I tested it at Talk:List of Northwestern University buildings to make sure it works. - You mentioned that "class=low" wasn't being reported properly. The "class" parameter can be FA, A, B, Start, Stub, or other values. "Importance" can be Top, High, Medium, or Low. If "class=low" is specified, then it doesn't fit any of the values that the class can actually take on. Is this the problem, or did you really mean "importance=low" or something else? Do you have an example of a page where this is happening? --Elkman (Elkspeak) 17:09, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

What you can do is make a project subpage and work on it there. Then you can take it back to DRV (or to RFPP) and request that the article be unsalted and the sandbox article moved into its place. - It means to be unprotected so an article can be made or moved there. --Coredesat 21:07, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
You know what, I'll unsalt it now.Actually, I can't unsalt because it was never salted! Feel free to collaborate on a new article there. --Coredesat 17:38, 30 September 2007 (UTC)
South side defined
All I can say, as a lifelong Chicagoan, is that the River defines the sides. It says so in one of those "for Dummies" books, too, he he. When you get into splitting off the NW, SW and SE sides, it's purely racial. As for that little article I rewrote on the Southeast side, I'm probably going to merge it to the South side article. You can even define the SE side in relation to the Calumet River, either by using it as the boundary, or taking its watershed as the SE side. The only other definitions that I have ever heard are that the Cook County Courts divide the County in half along Roosevelt Road for the purposes of assigning jury duty, and of course the addresses being divided by Madison--but nobody, nobody uses this as a dividing line for the sides. Truly, I say this with as much certainty as I can; the city is divided by the River. It is so ingrained that people don't feel the need to write it down. Speciate 22:06, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
- Imagine that you didn't have a decent source for defining the boundaries of, say, Hyde Park. What you could do is search for businesses in Google or Yahoo with the words Hyde Park in their names. Here is an example for "west side", and here are some listings for "southwest side" (unfortunately not in map form). People are unlikely to name their business "Southwest Dental Center" or "West Side Realty" if they are in the Southeast side of Chicago, right? Speciate 16:16, 30 September 2007 (UTC)
Re:Image categories
I agree, but the thing is I think a lot of the image categories were made awhile back before city/village ones. It will create a red link in some cases, but I will do it from now on.--Kranar drogin 20:17, 30 September 2007 (UTC)
