If you check the timeline at unix.org it seems that 1973 may be the date of 'external release' of the first Unix. Editors may discuss how to qualify the date in the article, to explain to our readers what the date refers to. You should join the discussion at Talk:Unix#First Release Date in hopes of reaching agreement.
