Previewing complex edits before saving
[edit]I've just partially repaired an edit you made at 15:36, 2 August 2011 (UTC) to Sedona, Arizona, by removing the reference you gave for updated census data. Unfortunately, when you updated the 2007 data to 2010 data, you made some kind of error in citing your reference, resulting in a big, red error message splashed across the bottom of the article. Wikipedia does this to warn editors when they've made a serious error in complex templates like {{cite web}}, but it does no good unless the editors preview their edit before they save, or at least look at the article after saving it.
I tried to fix the multiple problems in your edit by going to what I could deduce of the incomplete URL in your citation, but I found – to no surprise – that this Census Bureau database interface has a learning curve I couldn't scale in short time I allowed for this drive-by edit. So I'm asking you here, and the community on the article's talk page, to try to replace the broken reference.
I commend your efforts to update city information in multiple articles, but as I can tell you from painful personal experience, it's essential that you preview your work any time you use templates. (In fact, it's always a good idea to preview, for several reasons, each one of which will cause you problems eventually if you edit enough.) Your contributions represent knowledge of information sources that most editors do not have, and it's lost when your edits don't produce the result you intended. So please preview before saving. You need to provide citations when you change an article
[edit]Please remember to provide citations for the changes you make to articles. If you are unable to do this I ask that you refrain from changing the article. Also when you make a change, make sure to change other statements in the article as well. For instance when you changed the list of largest wind farms in the 'Wind Power in the United States' article, you didn't change the 'as of' date. You also did not provide a reference for the change.
Reference or citations can be tricky, especially in longer articles where a single reference may be used multiple times. If you add a new reference source, put it in a new <ref></ref> block. Do not change existing reference, unless you need to correct it. Add the name="...." attribute when the reference is used more than once in an article, but don't use a name that's already being used in the article. If a reference is no longer relevant to a paragraph, you should delete it. (Note that there is a Bot that will clean things up in a day or so if you happen to remove a named reference that is also cited in other portions of the article, but this works only if you do not re-use the same name for a new reference.)
You also have a bad habit of listing all (or nearly all) of your changes as minor changes, when many of them are not. A minor change is typically correcting grammar, spelling, article formatting, or minor rephrasing of a sentence. When you add new information or change information, it is not a minor change.
