Deletion of NMSU faculty photos

[edit]

I have a hobby (not a vendetta) of tracking down copyright-violating photos on Wikipedia. I was rummaging through the NMSU photos for some reason and spotted two that I thought were suspicious, and indeed they turned out to be copied from copyrighted sources. Finding suspicious photos is not that hard; there are some guidelines at How to detect copyright violations. It's almost impossible to get a photo of living person with a free license unless you take the photo yourself, so those are always suspicious. You may also want to read the Image casebook. Also please note that if you are going to upload a photo, it must either already have a free license, or it must belong to you and you hereby release it with a free license. If you are not the copyright owner you cannot release the photograph yourself. Hope this helps! --Uncia (talk) 01:26, 14 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This doesn't really explain how to release the copyright yourself if you ARE the copyright holder.TomAdmirer (talk) 05:44, 14 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It's done through the Licensing section of the upload form, see First steps/License selection. If the uploader owns the copyright, he can release it by selecting one of the free license choices there. If the uploader is uploading on behalf of (and with permission of) the copyright holder, he can upload it and have permission verified through the OTRS system, see OTRS. (If you do get permission from Walker, see if he'll send you a full-size photo - the one you have been using is very small!) --Uncia (talk) 12:31, 14 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hello, I'm AntiDionysius. I noticed that you made an edit concerning content related to a living (or recently deceased) person on Chuck Coleman, but you didn't support your changes with a citation to a reliable source. It's been removed and archived in the page history for now. Wikipedia has a very strict policy concerning how we write about living people, so please help us keep such articles accurate and clear. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you! AntiDionysius (talk) 23:58, 20 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
