History

December 2013 Marlin Equity Partners (Marlin), a global investment firm, announced that it completed its acquisition of Tellabs, including Tellabs’ mobile backhaul, metro/regional optical transport and access business units.[2] Marlin then announced plans to establish an independent business for the Tellabs access product portfolio. This singular focus will allow the access company to accelerate Tellabs' market leadership and growth in Optical Local Area Network (OLAN) solutions for enterprises and government agencies while continuing to provide service providers with excellent residential access products.[3]

For enterprises and government agencies, Tellabs access provides passive Optical LAN solutions that take advantage of the benefits of fiber to deliver next-level value and performance. In comparison to copper-based networks, passive Optical LANs are simpler and smarter, more stable, secure, scalable and sustainable.[4]

For service providers, Tellabs access provides an end-to-end cost-effective broadband access solution that passes more than 5 million homes in North America. Tellabs’ multiservice access platforms enables service providers to get the most from their existing infrastructures, reduce power consumption and grow revenue opportunities by delivering services faster.[5]

Tellabs access product portfolio is built on two key acquisition of Advanced Fibre Communications (AFC) and business unit of Marconi Communications (North American Access).

Mid 2004 Tellabs acquired AFC a top provider of broadband access solutions for the global telecommunications industry. With a customer base of more than 800 service providers worldwide, AFC continues to build and support the world's evolving broadband access network architecture.[6] SBC Communications (now AT&T) announced that it will work with AFC to implement its $6 billion Internet initiative.[7] And, AFC beat out larger competitors to win a contract to supply fiber-optic network access gear to Verizon Communications (Verizon FiOS), which could be worth several hundred million dollars.[8]

In early 2004, AFC acquired a business unit of Marconi Communications, North American Access, which sells fiber-access services to regional Bell operating companies and local exchange carriers. The company's core business is the provision of innovative and reliable optical networks, broadband routing and switching, and broadband access technologies and services.[9] The company's customer base includes many of the world's largest telecommunications operators. The company manages more than 4 million lines of capacity and about 1 million deployed lines.[10]

For most of its’ 40 year history, Tellabs operated as an industry leading supplier of packet-optical, mobile backhaul and Optical LAN networking solutions. Tellabs served telecom service providers, independent operating companies, MSO/cable companies, enterprises and government agencies with networks in more than 90 countries around the world. Proven in 80% of the top global communications service provider networks, Tellabs innovations enabled operators to boost revenue, reduce expenses and advance smart networks. Tellabs was known for its Chicago heritage with headquartered in Naperville, Illinois, with research and development centers, sales and service offices and strategic business partners located throughout the world.[11]

In 1975 Michael J. Birck co-founded Tellabs with a group of colleagues sitting around his kitchen table. In the early years Tellabs supplied network equipment, in particular echo cancellers and digital cross-connect systems, to phone companies. Birk headed the firm as it grew from a start-up with six employees and $312,000 in revenue to a firm with revenue of $1.3 billion in 2002.[12]

Optical Line Terminals (OLT)

The Tellabs’ Optical Line Terminal provides centralized intelligence, management and control of the end-to-end LAN. It also provides aggregation and distribution functions and typically resides in a building’s main data center. The goal of the Tellabs 1100 Series OLT equipment is to optimize capital expenditures, energy consumption and space requirements wherever possible. To accomplish that end goal, Tellabs provides a variety of distribution shelves that best match the total number of IP/Ethernet endpoints desired, match power utilization and minimize the physical space required within the main data center.[13]

Optical Network Terminals (ONT)

Tellabs has a long history designing Optical Network Terminals for use in high-volume PON commercial deployments. Tellabs fourth generation Optical Network Terminals deliver narrowband and broadband subscriber services cost-effectively over a PON platform to the IP/Ethernet end-points. This means that all services are supported natively over a single fiber, including analog voice, VoIP, high-speed data, IP video, RF video, smart buildings apps, security, surveillance, environmental and automation for modern high-performance LANs.[14]

Tellabs Panorama PON Manager is the cornerstone of an Optical LAN end-to-end system. It provides centralized intelligence and element management across the entire LAN, from OLT to ONT and extends to subtended powered devices. Tellabs PON Manager helps define LAN resources in software and then dynamically allocate them, based on real-time requirements.[15]

Advanced Software Packages

The Tellabs Optical LAN solution improves LAN availability uptime, increases operational efficiencies and network security. The Tellabs Advanced Availability Software Package helps build LANs that minimize annual network downtime while lowering costs, reducing human error and improving security. The Tellabs Advanced Operational Software Package improves IT efficiencies by increasing the speed of LAN configurations, monitoring, troubleshooting and MACs while once again reducing human error and network security risks. The Tellabs Advanced Security Software Package enhances physical LAN defensibility, enabling consistent protection policies that are centrally managed while continuing to reduce human error and increasing network stability.[16]
