Sock request

Could you check out User:Bella the Ball, definitely not new, Killiondude stopped by on IRC wondering if someone could look into, but no other CU is around and I know your on around this time. :) -- DQ (t) (e) 16:45, 26 August 2011 (UTC)

Hmm. They do appear to be another user, but are not evading a block or anything like that. I'm not sure what they're playing at, but perhaps a note on their talk page reminding them of WP:SOCK, alternate accounts, etc. would be a good idea. TNXMan 16:51, 26 August 2011 (UTC)

Actication of the <josephjordania> user

Dear Tnxman307,

I am writing this message on behalf of the user "josephjordania" who could not contact you himself as he was banned from editing Wikipedia articles and could not write the message himself. So here is the letter to you from Joseph Jordania:

Dear Tnxman307, This is Joseph Jordania from the Melbourne Univesrity, PhD in musicology. My Wikipedia username is "josephjordania". Couple of days ago I found out that my username was banned from editing Wikipedia articles, and I am writing this message to find out what was the reason for this action.

I am a dedicated Wikipedian, and consider Wikipedia to be the best possible encyclopedia that humans can create. I did plenty of additions and expansions of the Wikipedia articles, particularly in the sphere of my expertise (Traditional music of Georgia, polyphony, evolutionary musicology). I also received "thanks" from Wikipedia for my contributions, particularly for the article "Contact calls". I want to tell you that I have never done anything disrespectful to the content of Wikipedia, and always tried to develop the content of Wikipedia articles in my best abilities.

I suspect that the reason for banning me from editing Wikipedia was that I inadvertently damaged the photo link that was accompanying the article "Music of Georgia". This happened when I was expanding the article content couple of weeks ago. I want to tell you, that I had no intention to damage (or delete) this photo (or the link to it), and I did not actually touch the information and links in this page, and I have no knowledge why did this photo disappear from the Wikipedia article. I tried to recover this photo, but I do not have knowledge to do this. If this was the reason for the action against me, I want to say sorry for this, and want to assure you this was not a case o "vandalism", but was a case of not knowing how to restore the damaged link to the photo.

I would be happy if you explain me if there are any other reasons for banning me from editing Wikipedia. I would like also to ask you to enable me to continue editing Wikipedia articles to my best abilities. With the most sincere wishes, Joseph Jordania, Melbourne, Australia — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ketih King (talkcontribs) 23:18, 28 August 2011 (UTC)

Wikipedia generally does not permit people to operate more than one account at a time, which is what you seem to be doing. You are using the same IP address and computer as Ketih King. Please limit yourself to one account. TNXMan 00:04, 29 August 2011 (UTC)

I think User:Markwhitley may be another one (though it might be worth keeping just to see what new way he finds to spell "Vandalism". Vandaslium is my current favorite). --Muhandes (talk) 16:49, 29 August 2011 (UTC)

Indeed. Thanks for catching that, I've updated the SPI. TNXMan 16:54, 29 August 2011 (UTC)

Just a heads up

Hi. :) I just blocked what on behavioral evidence seems to be a sock of User:Christian2941 - same pattern of focusing on Philippine tv stations, same pattern of mixing blatant misinformation with what could be accurate information.

I don't know if a sock drawer check is necessary, as that doesn't seem exactly this guy's style, but I see a range block was needed last time to contain the situation. If it is the same person, I wanted to let you know just in case activity spins up again. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 12:51, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Three things: conflict of interest, non-notable, and Wikipedia is not a business directory. Can you stop by IRC, or gtalk me (info on my Userpage) when you have a minute? I have a query that I would like to run by you. -- DQ (t) (e) 19:27, 6 September 2011 (UTC)

Hi Tnxman307. Recently I've actually went so far as to attempt to delete {{astray}} because it is constantly being used where {{RD1}}, {{RD2}} or {{RD3}} belong. A plain reading of its language shows it is intended to address a post bearing the hallmarks of a person who thinks they are at the website of the organization they are asking about, or that we are affiliated with the subject they are asking about. I first note the issue at Wikipedia talk:Help desk and when that did not work, at the deletion discussion, but it appears it will be kept. I write because Wikipedia:Help desk#Withchurch is the type of question where astray does not fit.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 20:24, 6 September 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I will certainly keep a closer eye on my usage of the template in the future. Cheers! TNXMan 20:57, 6 September 2011 (UTC)

An assumption to make on my part, but I presume CheckUser shows that Ezekiel53746 evaded his block with an IP address that caused you to decline the unblock request? Strange Passerby (talkcont) 22:33, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

Exactly. He logged out and started vandalizing, calling people c***s, among other such pleasantries. TNXMan 22:46, 8 September 2011 (UTC)
I appreciate the clarification. Thanks for the check - it seems my original instincts (I had asked Courcelles to run a check yesterday, but later retracted the request) were right after all. I'll see where we can go from here. Strange Passerby (talkcont) 03:55, 9 September 2011 (UTC)

Okay, Tnxman, I've talked it over with Ezekiel and he admits to having vandalised. As the blocking admin was unwilling to unblock him, with his agreement I've gone to ANI to get some consensus. You're more than welcome to leave comments, since you also declined an unblock. Thanks, Strange Passerby (talkcont) 03:19, 10 September 2011 (UTC)

I had hardblocked Poopsandwich123 (talk · contribs) since he was making edits like this, when I noticed you had just softblocked him. Adminship

I have reviewed those pages carefully, and I understand that adminship is not a game, and should be treated seriously. Can you please nominate me for adminship? King of smart alecks 02:08, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

I'm sorry, but I really think you need more experience before standing for adminship. You have only been consistently active for the past few months. I would suggest editing steadily for a few months before going through with an RFA. You could help out at WP:AFC or patrol for vandalism by watching Special:RecentChanges. I hope this helps and if you have questions as you go, please let me know. TNXMan 02:42, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

Can you run a checkuser on 67.83.205.76 (talk+ · tag · contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RBLs · proxy check · block user · block log · cross-wiki contribs · CheckUser (log)) to see if it's running extensive vandalism please? I have reason to believe it may be the same as DB9 (talk+ · tag · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log · CA · CheckUser(log· investigate · cuwiki), both of whom were recently blocked for vandalism (the latter possibly being a compromised account). Also if you could check if DB9 is related to vandalism from any other IPs that would warrant a checkuser block. Magog the Ogre (talk) 20:53, 11 September 2011 (UTC)

DB9 has not edited, logged out or otherwise, since they were blocked. As for the IP you mention, there are no registered editors using it. I hope this helps. TNXMan 13:46, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

Thank you. Magog the Ogre (talk) 19:58, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

about this checkuser on the vandal (see here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/Bruno_corinthiano), i see that no block, no NOTHING. Questionnaire

Hi there, I wonder if you would be interested in helping me with my research on Wikipedia. I am writing a dissertation on Wikipedia as part of my undergraduate course at the University of Cambridge. What I am asking is for you to complete a questionnaire with a number of general, subjective questions about your experiences working on Wikipedia, for example concerning Wikipedia's culture, your motivation in participating and so on. It should take 10-20 minutes. Participants will be anonymous if requested. More information is available if you are interested. Thanks! I really appreciate any time you can give! Research into the user pages of Wikipedians: Invitation to participate

Greetings,

My name is John-Paul and I am a student with the University of Alberta specializing in Communications and Technology.

I would like to include your Wikipedia user page in a study I am doing about how people present themselves online. I am interested in whether people see themselves in different ways, online and offline. One of the things I am looking at is how contributors to Wikipedia present themselves to each other through their user pages. Would you consider letting me include your user page in my study?

With your consent, I will read and analyze your user page, and ask you five short questions about it that will take about ten to fifteen minutes to answer. I am looking at about twenty user pages belonging to twenty different people. I will be looking at all user pages together, looking for common threads in the way people introduce themselves to other Wikipedians.

I hope that my research will help answer questions about how people collaborate, work together, and share knowledge. If you are open to participating in this study, please reply to this message, on your User Talk page or on mine. I will provide you with a complete description of my research, which you can use to decide if you want to participate.

Thank-you,

John-Paul Mcvea

Thank-you for agreeing to participate in my study

Thank-you for agreeing to participate in my study, entitled “Online Self-presentation among Wikipedians.” I appreciate it.

As I indicated in my last message, here are five short questions about your user page that I would like you to answer. These will help me to understand your motivations for creating a user page such as yours. Please be as brief or as thorough as you like.

5 QUESTIONS

1. Are you a member of social networks such Facebook or MySpace?

2. In addition to maintaining a user page in Wikipedia, have you also written or edited articles? If so, about how many times?

3. What are the key messages about yourself that you hope to convey with your user page?

4. Have your Wikipedia contributions ever received feedback, such as being edited by others or commented on? Have you received a message from another Wikipedia user? If so, do you think your user page positively or negatively affected what other people said and how they said it?

5. Do you see your “online self” as being different from your “offline self?” Can you elaborate?

Please indicate your answers to these questions on your talk page, or on mine. Please respond by October 1st so that I have time to properly read your responses. If you like, you can email your answers to me instead (jmcvea@ualberta.ca).

Thank you again : )

I see you also added it to Sonus Quartet, and removed most of the article.[1] That's a bit odd. Viriditas (talk) 03:35, 2 October 2011 (UTC)
Some of the material is easily verifiable at a glance, so I'm restoring it incrementally. Viriditas (talk) 03:46, 2 October 2011 (UTC)

FYI... I just want to point out that neither of these articles were adverts in any way. Most, if not all of the information you removed is easily verifiable. The problem here is not tone, but one of sourcing. Viriditas (talk) 04:23, 2 October 2011 (UTC)

I removed a lot of unsourced information, mainly because it looked as if were copied from their website and/or a press release. If there are reliable sources for the info, it definitely can be restored. Cheers! TNXMan 14:43, 3 October 2011 (UTC)

Help push through Usurp please

Hello. I'm the Wikipedian in Residence at The Children's Museum of Indianapolis, and the one who originally asked our museum member to help us. He has responded to your questions regarding his username. He actually used it because his personal account is very old and he couldn't get into it. He's now trying to usurp. If you could push this through quickly, it'd be much appreciated. I'm sorry that he got bogged down in this and would like to help it get remedied. Thanks so much. LoriLee (talk) 20:22, 4 October 2011 (UTC)

Unfortunately, I am not a bureaucrat and do not have sufficient rights to change the username. However, Fred Bauder has left a message on their talk page offering to help. If there are more issues, please let me know. TNXMan 20:34, 4 October 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for the quick reply, I appreciate it! LoriLee (talk) 20:36, 4 October 2011 (UTC)

My SPI request

I have filed the request as I am being hounded by a number of users, I feel that if the request is not fulfilled, I will continue to be hounded by these users. I ask that you take this into consideration before throwing my case out. Colofac (talk) 15:26, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

thanks

Petition for unblocking user:agallob

I am the manager for the Special Collections in Performing Arts at the University of Maryland. I had assigned my student user:agallob to expand articles relating to our collections, but he misunderstood my directions and copy/pasted directly from our finding aids. He then found himself blocked for plagiarism (UNDERSTANDABLE!). I have since gone back and taught him correct Wikipedia protocols and content guidelines, and he would be under strict supervision from me for any articles he edits. If these are acceptable terms, can you please unblock his account? Thank you, --alifabeta (talk) 20:23, 6 October 2011 (UTC)alifabeta

I'm concerned because Agallob was left several messages on his talk page about his edits and never responded to them. Can you be sure that he will respond to messages regarding his edits? He can also post {{unblock}} on his talk page (he is still able to edit that page) to get the ball rolling. TNXMan 20:36, 6 October 2011 (UTC)
I'm pretty sure he had no idea about his talk page. He has been thoroughly educated now, and will be closely supervised. I will have him post {{unblock}} on his talk page. Thank you! alifabeta (talk) 20:46, 6 October 2011 (UTC)
But have you thoroughly educated him on WP:COI? (talk→ BWilkins ←track) 21:53, 6 October 2011 (UTC)
I have trained him on neutral writing, Wikipedia is not an advertising platform, etc. I have been debating the idea that what I'm doing and what he'll be doing is a conflict of interest. We represent the archives of the organizations/people whose articles we are editing and creating. Is that a conflict of interest? If I can enhance an article by adding information for which I have archival evidence, and then I cite and link to the archives that I pull the information from, is that self-promotion for my archives? It's helping the researcher. If you have any insight into this issue, or you know of an article where this issue is already discussed, can you link it to me? Thanks. alifabeta (talk) 13:36, 7 October 2011 (UTC)
