Hi,
I notice there is no page for data sizes, although there are articles for each data size, such as gigabyte. I'm no expert, but I'm sure there is someone out there that is. A page which lists them all with a breakdown would be useful.
The following information is extracted from http://isp.webopedia.com
Data Sizes
[edit]bit = 1 or 0 (from binary digit)
nibble = 4 bits
byte = 8 bits
transmission storage
kilobyte = 1000 bytes 1024 bytes
megabyte = 1000 kilobytes 1024 kilobytes
gigabyte = 1000 megabytes 1024 megabytes
terabyte = 1000 gigabytes 1024 gigabytes
petabyte = 1000 terabytes 1024 terabytes
exabyte = 1000 petabytes 1024 petabytes
zettabytes = 1000 exabytes 1024 exabytes
yottabyte = 1000 zettabytes 1024 zettabytes
http://isp.webopedia.com/TERM/Y/yottabyte.html
yottabyte is 2 to the 80th power bytes, which is approximately 10 to the 24th power (1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000) bytes.
The name yotta was chosen because it's the second-to-last last letter of the Latin alphabet and also sounds like the Greek letter iota.
There is clearly room for additional data such as 280 for yotta, explanation of the reason for each description as with yotta above. I assume that yotta is the largest?! That there is no googlebyte?! ;-)
An introduction that includes an explanation as to why there is a difference between storage and data transmission.
I like the tables that are found under articles like byte, gigabyte etc. as follows
Quantities of bytes
SI prefixes Historical use Binary prefixes
Symbol
(name) Value Symbol Value Symbol
(name) Value
kB (kilobyte) 10001 = 103 KB 10241 = 210 KiB (kibibyte) 210
MB (megabyte) 10002 = 106 MB 10242 = 220 MiB (mebibyte) 220
GB (gigabyte) 10003 = 109 GB 10243 = 230 GiB (gibibyte) 230
TB (terabyte) 10004 = 1012 TB 10244 = 240 TiB (tebibyte) 240
PB (petabyte) 10005 = 1015 PB 10245 = 250 PiB (pebibyte) 250
EB (exabyte) 10006 = 1018 EB 10246 = 260 EiB (exbibyte) 260
ZB (zettabyte) 10007 = 1021 ZB 10247 = 270 ZiB (zebibyte) 270
YB (yottabyte) 10008 = 1024 YB 10248 = 280 YiB (yobibyte) 280
Any ideas, is this worth doing?
Cheers,
Timothy.
