So far, I have been introduced to a lot of new terms and important aspects to being an efficient Wikipedia editor. In Writing for Digital Media, Chapter 1 and 2 provides us with some basic information that a lot of us should already have some sort of familiarity with. In order to be a successful writer, it is important to follow the basics in writing. For example, Chapter 1 alludes to being "clear and concise". It is also important that while writing for Wikipedia, the writer must present their audience from a neutral and respective perspective. Their editing for the article should also be factual and not opinionated. Wikipedia is considered to be an encyclopedia not a blog where you are given the opportunity to share your insights. Chapter 3 focuses on teaching the correct way to insert headers. Headers are valued to be attention grabbers. When people surf the net to find articles the header sticks out to them.

Tatnall Square Tatnall Square Academy has been around in Macon, GA for over 50 years. This private school institution provides students with knowledge so that they can be prepared for the real world. It received recognition six times by the local telegraph for having a well-rounded staff and the most successful summer camp. Tatnall Square has a graduation rate and college acceptance rate of 100%. After graduation students matriculate at some of the most "prestigious colleges". The students are afforded the opportunity to get a jump start into college courses. John Dewey's view of education, knowledge and children is that everyone should be afforded the opportunity to receive a quality education that leads to real-world knowledge and applications with all children being able to learn and succeed. Our nation’s education system must take the this knowledge to make sure our youth are prepared for a global society. At the forefront of this is science, technology, engineering, and math but we must also must make sure our youth are well-rounded and that they possess the employability skills necessary to compete in a global economy. The youth can learn and they can succeed but teachers must equip them. Furthermore, it is important to keep the children engaged and interested in learning so they want to continue to learn. I have always believed that the best teachers are the ones that made learning exciting, stimulating, and practical. Learning is dynamic and we must go back to teaching students instead of to a test. @Grlucas: Taliaferro County Courthouse, is where I added the citation. I also know that two articles are not required; however, I want to add Parish on Cherry to Wikipedia since it does not exist. I've added a small draft on that as well. If my information is coming directly from the owners/managers how would I cite that? I will know by the end of the week if I have enough information for a new article, in addition to my edits on Taliaferro County Courthouse.Tionnetakala (talk) 00:05, 26 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Tionnetakala: OK, good attempt, but please fix the references, as they are incorrect; they cannot be just URLs. Please use the proper template, like this one for a book. Did you look at the page preview before you published it? Hey Tionne! After checking out the edit history on the Taliaferro County Courthouse article, I'm really impressed with how much information you've added. I can tell a lot of time and attention has gone into your article, which I admire. The sentences are concise and give good information. All of the links work, which is great, but my biggest problem is that it's difficult to verify the info. After checking the references at the bottom of the page, the source of the information is not clear. The contents box is also in the middle of the page, which seems to be because a picture is put in the wrong place. Fixing that would be a quick change that would improve the page. On the whole, the article seems neutral, informative, and interesting. I feel like I now know more about the history of the Courthouse than I would have before you began editing. Taliaferro County Courthouse

I see that you have been making changes to this article. I have a couple of observations:

  1. Your reference are all incorrect. I appreciate that you're adding them, but they cannot be just URLs. You must use the correct template, like this one for books. There are some incorrect citations under the nav box at the bottom. These must be fixed.
  2. Next, I question some of your copyediting. For example, you changed "The plan featured the central courthouse square within a surrounding grid of streets." to "The plan included the center courthouse square isolated by a grid of streets." You have changed the meaning, and I'm not sure if it's for the best or even accurate. Do not just change words to change them. This is not the job of a copyeditor.
  3. You seem to save every little edit you make; why not make several (you can preview each one), then save. Like, why would you remove a bunch of text, save, then paste it back in?
  4. You've changed many details without support — even the number of stories in the courthouse. Which is correct: two or three? How do we know? Do you have evidence? Every change you make that is not a copyedit (not changing the meaning of content or adding more, but correcting for readability) must include a citation.

I'm tempted to revert your last two-dozen changes. Do you see a reason why we shouldn't? Then, you can start over. —Grlucas (talk) 10:22, 2 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

OK, here are my notes/suggestions.

  • Be careful of tone. There are some things that can seem OK outside of Wikipedia that will come across as too casual or even promotional on Wikipedia. Some examples of this would be the use of the word "you" and writing directly to the reader, as this makes it seem like it's written for a specific person by a specific person. You also want to avoid things like "in the heart of" since that can come across as marketing speak and may also be confusing for people not familiar with English sayings. It's much more neutral to write "located in the middle of" or just "located in". So for example I'd rewrite the sentence "Taliaferro County Courthouse is in the heart of Crawfordville, Ga surrounded by the Health Department, Senior Citizens building, and the Georgia Farm Bureau." as this:
The Taliaferro County Courthouse is located in Crawfordville, Georgia. The surrounding buildings are the Health Department, Senior Citizens building, and the Georgia Farm Bureau.
This is less poetic and pretty, but it's more straightforward. On another note, avoid state abbreviations. Some abbreviations are OK, such as using YMCA for the Young Men's Christian Association or the USDA for the United States Department of Agriculture, but state-wise we should use the full state name.
  • As your instructor stated the sources need to be formatted. If you're in Visual Editor you can add a citation by dropping it in the citation box, which should format it automatically. There are directions here and here on this. I've formatted the sourcing in the draft for you, but you can also format links by clicking on it in Visual Editor mode and selecting the option to convert the source.
  • I moved the history section above the architecture one as this is sort of how the article is traditionally laid out.
  • In general I think that your writing is OK, but make sure that you have sources for any of the claims in the article. There are some grammatical errors here and there, so definitely be careful to review your writing. This is why a draft can be so helpful, as this way you can work on the draft and review it before moving anything live.
  • On this note, the article can definitely use more sourcing if it's available. You also want to make sure that the sourcing is reliable - keep in mind that not all sources available on the Internet will be reliable.
Of the sources in the draft I'm most concerned about Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness, as its website states that it accepts volunteer submissions. It's unclear how much editorial oversight is really given to the articles (as it also looks like it relies on others to point out mistakes), so I would see this as a site similar to Wikipedia and as such, it cannot be used as a reliable source. Waymarking looks like it has similar issues given the information here, as it looks like it also accepts user submitted material. It does look like it has some review processes, but it looks like this is a review by other users on the site rather than by a specific set of authoritative individuals like in a peer reviewed journal. It's also not an official website like it would be for the NRHP or the state/city government.
