Mani Madhava Chakyar

[edit]

Thanks for the compliment and suggessions regarding my article on Mani Madhava Chakyar. About the quote "the master who gave eyes to kathakali", it wasnt told by one person, its a usage or is like used like that, since its he who trained kathakali artists for netrabhinaya on many occasions. great kathakali artists like Kalamandalam Krishnan Nair, sadanam krishnan Kutty were trained under him.So its impossible to find the person who said it first but you can find many many many articles in malayalam magazines and newspapers like Mathrubhumi, kalakaumudi etc. His biography "Manimadhaveeyam" can be taken as a reference. Thanks for the comments. User:Sreekanthv 05:58, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That's one of the reasons you should become an admin I think. You can stop cricket spammers and vandals. There is no obligation to meet any set amount of activity, as there is not a limited number of sysop-hoods around the place. Of course, you should start warning vandals also. The Lusiads and Camões

[edit]

About the centuries, that must be a mistake. I'll correct it. Regarding the Discoveries, they spanned the 15th and 16th centuries, with the navigation sin the 14th century being limited to the Moroccan coastline and the Canary islands. Regards,--Nuno Gabriel Cabral 15:13, 28 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

ACS Revisions

[edit]

Hi, Tintin. I'm not sure when the revisions occurred re Jack Hobbs. I know the ACS attempted to alter WG's record in the early 1980s by removing some games that had been included in an earlier classification accepted by Wisden. Wisden remonstrated about it in its 1982 editorial and the ACS retracted. I think the Hobbs figures may have been introduced when he was the subject of the ACS' Famous Cricketers series, but I'm really not sure. Probably best to write to Andrew Hignell via the ACS site. All the best. --Jack 04:59, 29 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Poratta?

[edit]

Your reverting poratta article is thoughtless, I would say. Just think of this: poratta is said in Malabar. In trivandrum it is borotta. For the elite all over the state it is Parotta. Which would you have? I suggest creation of an article called Mattheem poolem That combination had almost the status of a staple food item until a decade back in Malabar. Matthi you know is sardine and poola is cassava (not tapioca (an irrelevant thing in Kerala). What do you think of it? thair sadam is sadly missing and there should be collaboration to fix it. Subhash Bose, his sock - WikiSkeptic and Anwar

[edit]

Hi there Tintin. I'd be personally inclined to do so, as I whacked a 1-week block on Subhash for similar stuff last week (see Talk:Shiv Sena). However, I then got told off for not using rehabilitation. At the moment there is a warning, but if more people think so then I'm happy to block. Seeing as he gave Anwar a barnstar for fighting vandalism, I'd be rather skeptical. Blnguyen | rant-line 06:40, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

When I first read your mesage, I couldnt help, but laugh out loud. But I'm honoured, really. And to think it came from the wiki-brahmachari, who has refused the supple fruit of adminship for so long. ;-)
But the truth is, I've never thought of adminship so much. You can do almost everything an admin does except blocking people (right?). Perhaps I may, perhaps I wont. But one thing is for sure. The Knighthood Thingy

[edit]

Yes, both Maharajkumar of Vizianagram and Tagore did return rather than reject, I gather (as with John Lennon), but I was just using that one category to identify those who could have had honours but in the end do not. Also, all three of the aforementioned rejectees do appear on the List of people who have declined a British honour so I thought they should go in the category as well. No problem if I shouldn't have done it, though: Wikipedia is there to be altered, after all!

PS - We could always amend the category title to include those who returned an honour, or create a new category for such people. Ben davison 15:29, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Well, I'm sure it'll be taken on a case-case basis. But, being a moderate inclusionist, I'd probably vote to keep the articles on Saravana chain, Nalli and KPN, but delete/merge the articles on their owners as they're not as notable as the former entities. (Well, Nalli Chetty has written books in Economics.) I know these articles are not as notable to an average Wiki reader, nevertheless. But, the difficult issue at hand is where to draw the line. What if someone writes an article on the twin-shops at T.Nagar selling fruit juice owned by political rivals (contestants in Assembly elections) ? I don't have an answer and the good thing about wiki is I don't need to have an answer. There'll be others who vote too and I don't have an individual moral responsibility. So much for a question. :) -- Sundar \talk \contribs 06:25, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Tintin-From Gluewhale

[edit]

Thanks for the invitation. Yes we are very passionate about music and musicians of Kerala. Don't you think some guys like Ageo are unnecessarily making it very personal? I know my music very well. I have done quite a bit of searching on this guy and also know him well through T.v programs. If we were to go for a public poll where everyone in Kerala is allowed to vote then beware! We all will be beaten to pulp by his fans especially the female ones and those who watch T.V. Such is his popularity and respect here. he is more respected than like others who are just adored. Maybe since he is a lecturer. Some programs like Anjali on Amrita run due to him. Since he appears every day on Doordarshan his face is familir to every T.V watcher. He is a quiet guy who IMHO is being treated very badly by the so called film industry. If he were to sing more in films he would be the best after K.J.Y, M.G Sreekumar and P.Jayachandran. But he is a computer hardware geek and linux geek too! He came to our college to give a lecture on Linux! Also his knowledge on linux and music are vast. You can know his talent from his blog..his songs are a treat...So guys I think instead of treating a fellow malayalee like this, help me and jyothis out on this. We are here to stay. Jyothis is already in malayalam wiki.I am determined to get all our great singers here. Also willing to help you guys on any thing you want. But first help us out on this issue and let's stop giving "paras" to each other:-). Let's be united..and we can do wonders for malayalam and malayalees....If we do not know about something best to admit it than clinging on to nothing.(Tintin u did the right thing...ur attitude has been very good) Thanks....Let's move as friends...Please ask Ageo also to calm down. I do not keep any personal vengeance with anyone. If we are to create great articles we should be united and not scattered!

Hi!

[edit]

Was out for today (the 'day'). I'm here to stay. I'm a moderately active member in the malayalam blogging community, a snail paced wikibooks author and a team member in the thanimalayalam.org service for malayalam bloggers.. I'm happy to see the decision, and a little sad to see a lot of childish acts in the due course. Ageo's Acts and comments does not fit wiki's ethics. will try to be active in here too. Pradip Somasundaram himself has agreed to contribute to the music related articles if allowed ( a little confused if a person with a wiki article on himself can contribute to other articles). As you might have heard by now, he is a singer, electronics lecturer and a FSF activist. --Jyothis 05:52, 6 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Chiricheppu== Jithesh

[edit]

Saw both the article and his magazine page. IMHO the article gives very strong and clear signals that this was started by jithesh himself as the first editor is jithesh. No case for doubt here when compared to the somasundaran issue. Here the article clearly looks like an advertisement of sorts for his commercial gains rather than an unbiased one. He has even given his e-mail id here! Since he himself has started it (without any contention here) this looks like his ad in a news paper rather than an article and is a clear case for deletion. The magazine exists and is available in "pettikkadas". But this definitely should not warrant him any merit. The magazine may be popular with the uneducated masses but he is not a renowned cartoonist as he claims. In any case the article is an advertisement. Only proof is his own site. Anyway these are my immediate findings. I will revert back with more enquiries as I am now at work. regs---Gluewhale 07:52, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Tintin,
Thanks for the review of the article. I had made changes accordingly.
Here are my comments (the order is the same as your suggestion order) :

  • Regarding the Kizhakke kotta - The city of Thiruvananthapuram was formerly a temple city. The city evolved around the places of the temple. So, it is very common to refer it as the centre of the city. Moreover, if you are taking the boundaries of the city corporation, the area is some where near the centre. The corporation extends further south and west with thick residential population. However commercial establishments are less in those areas; thus making it pure residential areas of the city. So I think, we can keep the sentence. What you say ?
  • Changed.
  • Changed.
  • I think, the location of highland, midland and lowland should follow the para "The district can be divided in to ...". That provide the reader a clearer idea about the context.

"The paragraph that begins The district can be divided in to three geographical regions should provide some context." - Please help.

  • Sure. I will put more photos.
  • The details are added. Please check.

Please go ahead with the review. I am waiting to hear more from you.

Sorry, I don't have that one. I left a note with the author of the addition to the Leyland article to come back with a source and added the Achong cross-ref to indicate there is some dispute here. It's early morning here and I'm off to work: I'll have a look when I get back tonight to see if I have anything else that might help. Johnlp 07:13, 8 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi: sorry, I thought it was a different book you were referring to. I have that one. It says, of Leyland: "His slow bowling was at times most effective and he is reputed to have invented the term 'Chinaman' to denote his left-arm off-breaks." In Achong's bit in the same book, it says: "It is sometimes said that the term 'Chinaman', for a left-hander's googly, was inspired by him, but this appears to have no basis in fact."

The 1987 obit of Achong in Wisden says that the dismissal of Robins (stumped by Ivan Barrow off Achong) in the second Test of 1933 gave the term currency in England - which may mean that it was around before, but not much used until it got attached to Achong.

And the 1968 obit of Leyland has the following: "According to Bill Bowes, Maurice claimed he was responsible for the term 'Chinaman'. Because his chances of bowling were few, he began bowling the occasional left-hander's off-break instead of the normal and natural leg-break. Whenever two batsmen were difficult to shift or something different was wanted someone in the Yorkshire team would say, 'Put on Maurice to bowl some of those Chinese things'. Roy Kilner explained, 'It's foreign stuff and you can't call it anything else'." All of which sounds quite plausible until you realise that when Kilner died Leyland had taken only 11 wickets in eight first-class seasons (no more than four in any single season) - he didn't really get going as a bowler until 1928, and it was probably Kilner's death in April that year just before the start of the season in England that opened up greater possibilities for Leyland to bowl than he had had before.

What I can't find is any description of Achong's bowling, beyond the fact that he bowled slow left-arm spin; I don't know whether he did actually bowl Chinamen, or just left-arm orthodox. If he did bowl unorthodox left-arm spin, then the Robins story could yet be true. As well as, or instead of, the Leyland story. Johnlp 20:28, 8 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The description of Achong's bowling is interesting. My view would be that the safest thing to do is to allude to both versions for the origin of the term wherever it crops up: ie in Achong and Leyland biog articles and in The Chinaman. What do you think? Johnlp 08:21, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
