Administrators' newsletter – October 2019

News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2019).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a discussion, a new criterion for speedy category renaming was added: C2F: One eponymous article, which applies if the category contains only an eponymous article or media file, provided that the category has not otherwise been emptied shortly before the nomination. The default outcome is an upmerge to the parent categories.

Technical news

  • As previously noted, tighter password requirements for Administrators were put in place last year. Wikipedia should now alert you if your password is less than 10 characters long and thus too short.

Arbitration

Miscellaneous

  • The Community Tech team has been working on a system for temporarily watching pages, and welcomes feedback.

SPI tool

The SPI tool has barfed on me a couple of times today.

"error":{"code":"badtoken","info":"Invalid CSRF token.","*":"See https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php for API usage. Subscribe to the mediawiki-api-announce mailing list at <https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/mediawiki-api-announce> for notice of API deprecations and breaking changes."},"servedby":"mw1347"}

I checked on IRC and it's not just me, DQ's also had the problem. Help, please! Cabayi (talk) 14:14, 11 October 2019 (UTC)

As have I. As I said in comments at an SPI, I've occasionally had errors before, but usually if I simply rerun the script, it then works. Now it doesn't work no matter what I do and even if I do it repeatedly. I just tried to archive a closed report and could not.--Bbb23 (talk) 02:10, 12 October 2019 (UTC)
Some MW update broke the script. To think that I won't have to think about it again now that I turned in the bit... Should be fixed now. T. Canens (talk) 03:03, 12 October 2019 (UTC)
Thanks TC. It works a treat now. Cabayi (talk) 09:22, 12 October 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for fixing, but I don't understand your comment. Are you saying because you resigned your functionary privileges you won't be fixing the script in the future if something happens, or am I misunderstanding? Just to save back-and-forth, if you are no longer going to edit the script, who (preferably among the SPI team) do you recommend?--Bbb23 (talk) 12:30, 12 October 2019 (UTC)
I'll be maintaining the script, just that I didn't expect to have to touch SPI so soon after turning in the bit. T. Canens (talk) 03:42, 13 October 2019 (UTC)

My apologies

I was hoping for a bit of enlightenment about Dr.Koo's activity on zh: (for which I thank you) and to give zhwiki a heads-up that they have an active sockpuppet on their wiki (for which I seem to have stirred up great apathy). Thanks for taking a look. I'll stop dragging you back to SPI issues, I promise. Cabayi (talk) 06:24, 22 October 2019 (UTC)
