Adopt Me?

[edit]

Transcluded from User talk:Tim1357/adoption

edit

I Am a recent join and i am very interested in building a bot. I am tired of being yelled at for errors that I did not know were errors, and I'd like to have someone to run ideas through so I can have some level of confidence. Also, I recognized your name as you have already helped me. I forgot where tho.--Tim1357 (talk) 03:05, 9 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sure thing. Just create a subpage in your userspace and tell me the location so we can keep all the questions and answers in one place. –xenotalk 03:16, 9 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
How do I do that?--Tim1357 (talk) 03:24, 9 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I've created it at User talk:Tim1357/adoption. –xenotalk 03:34, 9 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
My Mistakes

So i am in the process of fixing a few mistakes. Right now, I am making sure that I have not messed up any ([[#CITEREF|]]) references when I used my AWB to fix duplicate refrences. Another mistake i made was adding an inbox before some of the tags in an article. This apparently is bad. This does not, to my knowledge, affect the part of the article that the viewer sees. Should I worry about this? or will some bot come along and fix it for me.--Tim1357 (talk) 03:54, 9 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The infoboxes you added have no pertinent information. They might as well not be there... If you are looking for something to do with AWB, I would suggest starting out with some simple typo fixing, or perhaps fixing links to disambiguation pages. At least until you get used to AWB and ensuring that what will be output is properly formatted. You should also check your edits in a browser after you make them to make sure you are doing things properly. I am going to take off those infoboxes for now. –xenotalk 04:12, 9 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Make sure you are only un-doing the ones from today. The ones from yesterday (mostly concerning german/soviet submarines) have useful information. I was going to go through and add the info manualy after the AWB proccess was done, but i guess i can do that right in the AWB. When you revert the changes, please make sure to add the needs infobox template back into the talk page. Thanks for your help. I feel like it could be so easy to tell annoying kids like me to F**K off and not skrew anything else up, and im glad you take the time to help--Tim1357 (talk) 04:20, 9 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
K, I just reverted the US ships. An infobox that just replicates the single two pieces of information the article holds is kindof overkill. It's best to go slower and gather information on the subject as you add the infobox. I think I've rolled back all the right edits. –xenotalk 04:27, 9 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I added the information to them because they were listed here[1], which i thought meant, I should just take the info on the page and move it into the infobox. I took your advice and I am starting to fix typos. However, I dont think the RegEx Typos are loading because it does not find typos on the pages that are supposed to have typos. How do i fix this? (p.s. i made sure to un-click all of the "skip" boxes")--Tim1357 (talk) 04:51, 9 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
did you click "Enable regex typo fixing" ? –xenotalk 04:56, 9 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes i did, I think it may be my computer, shes an old lady and sometimes she takes a while.--Tim1357 (talk) 05:12, 9 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Apology

[edit]

I apologize for butting in, I'd like to take the opportunity to apologize if I came off a bit unwelcoming earlier today. When I saw my watchlist fill up with a newbie using AWB I guess I got a bit heated. What I said on your talk page about joining a wikiproject and doing some content-building tasks is good advice as Xeno will probably tell you. While most of your efforts for today have been reverted, there are a few that I got to when you did them and partially filled them in, and now I'm going back to complete them. Anyways, welcome, and I hope you enjoy yourself here. -MBK004 05:01, 9 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No, no. it was my fault for trying to do something that deep down I knew was not contributive. Would it be a good idea for me to go back and add the infoboxes, filling them in completely? Or would that be a waste of my time?--Tim1357 (talk) 05:11, 9 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
While the backlog for ship articles without infoboxes is currently over 2000, this is actually a very good figure because over a year ago it was over 3000. When I first joined the ships wikiproject in 2007 we embarked upon a tagging drive to identify every article under the scope of the project and tag them for any needed maintenance. We also standardized our infoboxes and needed to replace the older ones with the new design. That backlog is at about 200 articles now, and when it hits zero, the articles that need infoboxes will be tackled. My suggestion is to let those who have been doing these for a while do them, while you are reading up on how things work as well as trying your hand at the various tasks available for a new editor to do. Most of the articles that you've been trying to do today will require a bit of research to properly populate them, which means that the experienced editors will usually also expand the stub at the same time as the infobox is done. -MBK004 05:27, 9 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, ill work on typos and stuff. Thanks--Tim1357 (talk) 05:40, 9 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Just let me know if you run into more trouble or want to bounce any other large scale-tasks off me. You can also keep an eye on WP:AWB/Tasks and see if there's any requested tasks that you can pick up. –xenotalk 14:37, 9 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You seem to be getting on fairly well, so I'm going to untransclude this from my talk page. Ask me questions there if anything comes up. Cheers, –xenotalk 02:34, 1 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
