Not a fan of Scheinwerfermann (talk) 06:55, 10 May 2009 (UTC), but thanks for the deletion anyways[reply]

{{helpme}} I would like to make the DeQ Magazine page a bit more "wiki" friendly but am not sure where I made the error when publishing the page. Any advice would be nice! Thanks! Theruined (talk) 07:23, 10 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

OK; I will make a copy of the page in your user area, have a look at it, and then respond here very soon.  Chzz  ►  07:22, 10 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I've taken a look at the page, thanks for copying it over, now where should I begin with the edits? Theruined (talk) 07:25, 10 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have moved the page into a subpage within your user space; it's now in User:Theruined/DeQ Magazine. Now we can relax; it doesn't matter if the 'live' copy is deleted. We can work on it. Give me about 5 minutes, and I will write here explaining the problems.  Chzz  ►  07:27, 10 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yea the live page was deleted by admins and I guess I'll have to fix it, honestly it wasn't self-promotion, it was more-or-less trying to promote the historical significance of what this publication is trying to do. I even used templates from other magazines to provide the backdrop for the article. Theruined (talk) 07:29, 10 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • First problem - if you have a 'conflict of interest' - ie if you are involved with this organisation - then it is highly recommended that you do not create the article. You could request that it is created, and you could suggest references and content, but you shouldn't actually make it or edit it later (directly). If you do have such a conflict of interest, then you need to read the business FAQ, conflict of interest and WP:BESTCOI.
  • Second problem, we need to establish notability - in this case, it must meet WP:ORG. Currently, the only references are self-references to the organisations' own website. This does not establish notability, because this is a 'primary source'. For example, I could make an article saying I was the Queen of England, and reference my own myspace page. It would not be accepted; I would have to show a news report of my Queenhood.
Similarly, this article has to demonstrate notability with reliable, verifiable secondary sources. Usually, that means a mainstream news article about the organisation, or something in a book. It must be a 'substantial' report, not just a passing mention. I've just had a quick look in Google News Search here, and it looks like it should be possible to add such sources - so this may be OK; unfortunately, the most promising ones require a payment to see them, so I'm unable to make sure if notability can be established. Perhaps you know of newspaper details of articles about the org?
  • Next - all the information in the article needs to be supported by sources such as those above. Everything. You cannot say, "Founded in 2008" unless you have a reliable, verifiable reference to prove it. If you can find such references, you would put in something like this;
Founded in 2008<ref> some newspaper</ref>, DeQ Magazine was conceived by Anthony
Turgman<ref> another ewspaper</ref> and supported by the students and friends of
the University of California, Riverside community.<ref> and a third newspaper</ref>

Below, I will add my own guide to writing references to show you good ways of doing it; specifically, if you use the same reference several times, you can use a 'named reference'.

  • Lastly, the article needs to maintain a neutral point of view. A lot of the current version is not neutral;

DeQueue (DeQ) Magazine is a music, fashion, and art magazine that began as a way to provide a exposure for local underground musicians, artists, and fashion designers that would normally go unnoticed. Meaning, 'to rid the world of mainstream media', DeQ focuses on the heart and soul of art without all the fluff found in modern publications. Founded in 2008, DeQ Magazine was conceived by Anthony Turgman and supported by the students and friends of the University of California, Riverside community[2]. Providing an atmosphere of success and longevity, DeQ Magazine has helped many[quantify] artists get noticed[weasel words] in the Southern California area, as well as branching out[quantify] across the world[where?] to find and review artists covering a variety of genres[clarification needed].

I hope you will find my ideas helpful. It may sounds somewhat harsh, but I'm just being straight with you.

I see that you are new to Wikipedia, so I strongly recommend the following course of action - because there is no deadline;

  • Spend some time getting more familiar with Wikipedia, by working on some other, unrelated articles. Try to get involved a little; it's the quickest way to learn how things work. I see that you've had a 'welcome' above, but I will add mine directly below here, as I think it has some very direct, useful advice on how to get going.
  • At the same time, work on slowly improving the article. You may find that you will need to almost start again; start out with a very short article, and add one fact at a time from reliable sources.
  • When you think that you have got it into some kind of shape, ask someone to check it and give their opinion. Ask for help; do not create it yourself.

Finally - in the interests of complete honesty - if your only intention on Wikipedia is to promote this organisation, then you will not have a happy time. If, however, you are prepared to help improve this wonderful resource, along with the rest of us volunteers, then I personally guarantee you'll enjoy it. We're not all out to 'get you' - because 'we' includes you. All these rules etc were written by the community of users, and if you sit back and think it through, you'll probably realise why we need all this stuff.

Please - have a look at my welcome, have a go at creating a test page, and then perhaps check out the ideas for getting involved.

To get more help, you can either;

I hope I'll be able to help you further. Good luck with whatever you decide.  Chzz  ►  07:56, 10 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome

[edit]

Hi, Theruined. This is NOT some automated message...it's from a real person. You can talk to me right now. Welcome to Wikipedia! I noticed you've just joined, and wanted to give you a few tips to get you started. If you have any questions, please talk to us. The tips below should help you to get started. Best of luck!  Chzz  ►  07:56, 10 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

ようこそ
  • You don't need to read anything - anybody can edit; just go to an article and edit it. Be Bold, but please don't put silly stuff in - it will be removed very quickly, and will annoy people.
  • Ask for help. Talk to us live, or edit this page, put {{helpme}} and describe what help you need. Someone will reply very quickly - usually within a few minutes.
  • Edit existing articles, before you make your own. Look at some subjects that you know about, and see if you can make them a bit better. For example, Wikipedia:Cleanup#2009.
  • When you're ready, read about Your first article. It should be about something well-known, and it will need references.

Good luck with editing; please drop me a line some time on my own talk page.

There's lots of information below. Once again, welcome to the fantastic world of Wikipedia!

Tips on referencing

[edit]

There are lots of ways to do this, some are simple, some more complex.

Personally, I like using citation templates, and fill in as much as I possibly can; maybe a bit more work, but I think it looks better. You have a <REF> at the start, then a suitable cite tag, then </REF>. An example usage is;

<ref>
{{Citation
 | last = Preston
 | first = Peter
 | title = D. H. Lawrence in the modern world
 | last2 = Hoare
 | first2 = Peter
 | author2-link =
 | publication-date = 1989
 | edition = illustrated
 | place = [[Cambridge]], [England]
 | publisher = [[Cambridge University Press]]
 | page = 125
 | isbn = 0-521-37169-4
 | url = http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=J5nRoaOwkPMC&printsec=frontcover#PPA125,M1
 | accessdate = 2008-05-11
}}
</ref>

For all the possible things to include, see Template:Citation

Of course, you don't have to put everything in, just whatever you can. The above example is a book, but I've included a 'convenience link' to a website that displays it.

Then, at the end of the document (but before any 'category' tags), you need a references section. You just put,

== References ==

{{reflist}}

Hard work? - help is at hand. There are lots of tools that create cite tags automagically. Personally, I use Zotero for the web links, and the cite book generator for books.

I also recommend you look at other articles and copy from them - especially featured articles, which should have good refs.

Hope this help, cheers, --  Chzz  ►  07:56, 10 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

WOW! Incredible, and no I do not take offense to what you have said since this makes sense and I was not aware of many of these aspects prior to reading (after posting). Anyways, it will certianly take me a while to go through all of this and actually be able to digest it, I do appreicate all your help and time taken to help ease me through this process.

I will be in touch with you when I have any more questions as I will be trying to dig up some references and have more neutral appeal to this article. You've helped me realize what I have to do to actually get better at writing these types of things.Theruined (talk) 08:10, 10 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No worries. I'm sorry it's so much, so complex. Best thing - ignore it all for a bit, and dive into the 'welcome' thing. It's incredibly simple to work on articles etc...but complex when it's a company, and when you're involved etc. Come back to the more complex stuff later; be bold and dive into some basic edits first. Don't feel you need to read tons...you don't.  Chzz  ►  08:59, 10 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
