[edit]Nescafe Extra Challenge
[edit]Hello Rocket how are you doing ?. I think it is amazing you found the 1991 edition won by Joe Johnson. How did you find it ?. Is there any chance there was an edition in 1992 ?. Would it be a little odd if they only staged it in 1991 and 1993 but not in 92 ?. Is there any info on this please ?. Great job by the way !. 178.167.165.72 (talk) 17:28, 8 October 2022 (UTC)
- Hello, thanks for your interest. The results can be found on Cuetracker, but we can't use it to cite anything, so I've looked through newspaper archives (Newspapers.com, British Newspaper Archive) and found more details about that edition. I can't find anything about the 1992 edition though. Therocket1990 (talk) 08:54, 12 October 2022 (UTC)
Oh ok have cuetracker added any other new events like this lately that I wasn't aware of ?. I spotted this one on here. Many Thanks 178.167.195.49 (talk) 22:43, 21 October 2022 (UTC)
1988 Kent Challenge in Hong Kong
[edit]Hello the Therocket1990 (talk) i see you added Frankie Chan as the runner-up in the above event losing 3-1 to James Wattana in the final. How do you know that is the same event as I do not see the title of the Kent Challenge in the article, can you help me out please ?. Thanks so much 92.251.160.189 (talk) 18:09, 23 October 2022 (UTC)
- Hello. The tournament was covered by the South China Morning Post. The article from 23 July 1988 titled “Wattana fends off Chan bid”, states — "EVEN a tournament-high break of 85 was not enough to save Hongkong's Franky Chan from an inevitable defeat in the final of the HK$200,000 Kent Snooker Challenge at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium last night. Thailand's teenage sensation Wattana Pu-Ob-Orm wrapped up the best-of-five-frames final before a capacity crowd with a dazzling array of deft potting, pin-point positioning and measured dafety, three frames to one."
- Also note from 26 July 1988 titled "Kent Snooker Challenge '88 — Congratulations to Wattana", says — Kent congratulates Wattana Pu-Ob-Orm of Thailand for his dazzling display of snooker skills which enabled him to take home the Kent Snooker Challenge '88 trophy and the First Place prize-money of $80,000. Runner-up Franky Chan of Hong Kong made off with a cheque for $30,000.
- Full results: (All matches until the final were decided on the aggregate score over two frames and the final was played under a best-of-five frames format)
- First round: Bruce Anderson (NZ) b Udon Khaimuk (Thai) 124-112; Frankie Chan (Hong Kong) b Gung Jiemin (China) 147-86; Geet Sethi (India) b Sunny Tong (Hong Kong) 130-72; Sakchai Sim-Ngam (Thai) b Gary Lackenby (Aust) 141-85; Kenny Kwok (Hong Kong) b Stephen Robertson (NZ) 168-17; Wattana Pu-Ob-Orm (Thai) b Lee Tsung Yuan (Taiwan) 168-19; Lim Koon Guan (Singapore) b Geoff Miller (Aust) 176-47; Sou Kok Leong (Macau) b Gary Kwok (Hong Kong) 128-85.
- Qtr-f: Chan b Anderson 127-87; Koon Guan b Kok Leong 125-106; Sethi b Sim-Ngam 144-97; Wattana b Kwok 132-119.
- Semi-f: Chan b Sethi 158-86; Wattana b Koon Guan 152-57.
- Final Wattana b Chan 3-1 (67-39, 74-36 0-85 75-3) Therocket1990 (talk) 09:10, 24 October 2022 (UTC)
Chris Turner Snooker Archive said Wattana won a £6,000 first prize for winning the 1989 Kent Challenge. Do you think this is the Kent Challenge as this is listed from 1988. 92.251.179.244 (talk) 02:06, 2 November 2022 (UTC)
- Here is some of what Chris Turner wrote on his website — "Having regained the Asian title in 1988 he took part in the professional ticket qualifying events in the UK, winning the first and losing in the final of the second. He picked up a £6000 cheque winning the Kent Challenge in Hong Kong and at last won the world amateur championship in Sydney beating Barry pinches 11-8 in the final. This guaranteed him professional status for the 1989/90 season."
- Source: https://web.archive.org/web/20130920200122/http://cajt.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/Players/Wattana.html
- As you can see, he did not mention in what year the Kent Challenge took place, but these tournaments seemed to be listed in the chronological order and World Amateur Championship in Sydney was held between 14 and 26 November 1988.
- I've also found the results of the 1989 Kent Challenge:
- Qtr-f: S Leung (Hong Kong) b R Farebrother (Aust) 126-98 (86-35) Sakchai Sim-Ngam (Thai) b G Sethi (India) 118-98 (69-37), K Kwok (Hong Kong) b B Anderson (NZ) 132-72 (58-46), J Wattana (Thai) b T Ang (Singapore) 126-63.
- Semi-f: Kwok b Wattana 117-89 (76-39) Sim-Ngam b Leung 132-85 (57-68).
- Final Kwok b Sim-Ngam 3-1 (68-32 100-11 72-68 79-8)
- Source: https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/120934409/
- In the qualifying rounds, Hong Kong's Kenny Kwok and Stanley Leung won the two berths available in the main round. Kwok trashed Zhong Wenmin of China 143-53 in the first qualifying-round match and then came from behind to defeat another Hong Kong player David Yao 123-113 to earn his main round berth. Leung defeat Sou Kok Leong of Macau 169-29 and then Hong Kong's top player Franky Chan 127-83 to met Fairbrother in the main draw.
- Source: https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/122285755
- According to this article, Wattana won this title the previous year, so I believe our Wikipedia article gives the wrong year for the Kent Challenge. Therocket1990 (talk) 10:49, 3 November 2022 (UTC)
Fabulous work well done in digging out all those results however you done it. We should and will go with you on this one. Great work 92.251.134.48 (talk) 17:42, 3 November 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for your interest. I researched it by going through various newspaper archives. It was great fun! Therocket1990 (talk) 10:07, 4 November 2022 (UTC)
I notice you are finding lots of the results from the early to mid nineties, which is class
[edit]Hi I noticed you are finding new events, Ie the 1991 Nescafe extra Challenge, 1989 The Kent cup, 1988 Kent Challenge etc. Great work btw. Are you trying to find others ?. All these new events found are vital to the history and it is so important to a fan like me. Are you working on finding others please ?. Kind Regards 31.200.139.148 (talk) 23:56, 2 November 2022 (UTC)
- Hello, thanks for your interest. Of course, I'm trying to find more information about old events, which could be added to the Portal. Kind regards Therocket1990 (talk) 11:20, 3 November 2022 (UTC)
What is the link for the portal ?. I read on Joe Swail's website some years ago that he won the King's Cup in 1990 and 1991. We have no reference on wiki of the 1991 edition, would you be able to help with this as we have the 1990 and 1992 editions. Many Thanks 92.251.134.48 (talk) 17:46, 3 November 2022 (UTC)
- Unfortunately it's really difficult to find information about King's Cup and I cannot find any data for the 1991 edition. I'm not sure about Joe's second win though, because Evening Herald article from 22 May 1992 titled “Swail romps to victory in Cork”, states — BELFAST cueman Joe Swail produced the performance of the week to beat Jason Prince (Derry) by 9-1 in the Irish Professional Snooker Championship final at Jurys Hotel, Cork last night. Swail last won a tournament 19 months ago when he beat Thai wonderkid James Wattana to win the King's Cup in Bangkok. There's no mention of the 1991 edition so I'm not sure of it's existence, Joe's site could well be mistaken. Therocket1990 (talk) 09:16, 4 November 2022 (UTC)

Billiards and snooker at the Southeast Asian Games
[edit]I noticed you have done a lot of editing for the Southeast Asian Games, thank you, I am formerly Leed Andrew before I changed my username, I have edited most of the page, it seems you have found a lot of information pre 2005, there are many years including 1987, 1991, 1993, 1995, 1997, 1999, 2001 and 2003 that are missing some gaps, if you have any sources that help me fill in the gaps it would be greatly appreciated it seems that past information about the Billiards and Snooker in the Southeast Asian Games is limited. for instance sources I have found say Efren Reyes has won 3 Gold Medals at the Southeast Asian Games, I could only find the 1987 English Billiards and I though he won the 1987 Snooker Gold Medal, but acording to your source this is incorrect, like I said any help would be appreciated, as I really want to complete it. Bob Rosenburger (talk) 17:29, 16 December 2022 (UTC)
- Hello, thanks for your interest. I'll try to help you, but it's really difficult to find the results from the early to mid 90s — informations about team events are especially hard to find. As for Reyes, he probably won the snooker doubles event. The Straits Times article from 22 September 1987 titled "Reyes on cue with success", states — The winner of three Sea Games gold medals — local pool, English billiards and doubles snooker (partnering Rene Cruz) — demonstrated a simple understanding of the complex geometrical laws as even the seemingly impossible balls headed for the pockets like they were magnetically attracted. Regards, Therocket1990 (talk) 10:33, 19 December 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you, I have added this to the list of Southeast Asian Games, thanks! not sure what local pool means? I also found this article in 1999 that may be helpful http://www.newsflash.org/1999/07/sp/sp000766.htm Bob Rosenburger (talk) 20:51, 21 December 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for you recent edits for the Southeast Asian Games, I believe the list is almost complete, just some missing info for some years but that's about it I believe, was that all the information for the year of 1997 and is there any specific place where you find this information? Regards. Bob Rosenburger (talk) 14:06, 29 December 2022 (UTC)
- I’ve spent a lot of time lately looking through the newspaper archives in various countries and although most of the sources use the name 'local pool', I did find an article from Philippine newspaper 'Tempo', which provide an important information. It's titled "‘Bata’ Reyes defies Father Time, sure of bronze medal in SEAG" and states — "The pool legend assured himself of a bronze medal but will look to move one step closer towards his first-ever gold in the biennial meet since winning the men’s eight-ball, men’s snooker and men’s English billiards of the 1987 Jakarta Games."
- Source: https://tempo.com.ph/2022/05/16/bata-reyes-defies-father-time-sure-of-bronze-medal-in-seag/
- In fact, he also won two gold medals in 1999 Games, but it looks like the third gold medal in 1987 came from eight-ball singles event. Also according to 'The Straits Times', he beat Jose Parica in the final. The article from 15 September 1987 titled “'Kid' takes pros to the cleaners ”, states — ""My cousin and I used to sleep on the pool table. I literally grew up there," said Reyes, who started his Sea Games campaign by winning the local pool final over another Filipino cue artist, Jose “Amang” Parica 6—4".
- As for our Wikipedia article, it's still missing some results of team events. I've found some new information, which I will be adding to the article shortly. Regards, Therocket1990 (talk) 09:57, 16 January 2023 (UTC)
- Great, That's interesting an eight-ball event was held that early, I though it was only Snooker & Billiards during the 1987 Southeast Asian Games, I still haven't managed to find the Silver & Bronze Medallists for the English Billiards in 1987. Great find, add it to the article, and any further information you find. Regards, Bob Rosenburger (talk) 20:15, 16 January 2023 (UTC)
- I believe the list is close to being complete after you have added the information you found, thank you. Regards, Bob Rosenburger (talk) 20:17, 16 January 2023 (UTC)
- I don't know if there was a bronze medal for the 1987 English Billiards section due to there not being one awarded the next event in 1991, Regards, Bob Rosenburger (talk) 20:22, 17 January 2023 (UTC)
- Is the page for the Billiards and snooker at the Southeast Asian Games all complete? Edward Frankley (talk) 01:04, 13 February 2023 (UTC)
