Edit Filter
[edit]I do not know what you mean about me having to create an account, as I was pretty sure that is what I already have. Also, what is it about the edit that I've been trying to add that makes too unconstructive to be posted? Tuboll345 (talk) 07:48, 6 August 2016 (UTC)
- @Tuboll345: my apologies, that response may have been meant for someone else. I've reviewed the comment you were trying to make, and it boils down to a number of things. We can't discuss the content of the filter/what exactly it is which is tripping it, but you may find it useful to work elsewhere on the project before attempting to post talk messages on controversial topics. I also note you attempted to create another user's user page, why? -- samtar talk or stalk 08:21, 6 August 2016 (UTC)
- I think these two links will explain that:[11][12]. Tuboll345, your post hit a filter due to the controversial nature of the topic, but you'll be able to make this edit after you've made three more edits anywhere on Wikipedia. For example just make three meaningless edits to User:Tuboll345. -- zzuuzz (talk) 08:34, 6 August 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks zzuuzz -- samtar talk or stalk 09:00, 6 August 2016 (UTC)
- @Samtar: Me creating of another user page was done as a response to the comment suggesting that I make a new account, I got a little confused. Tuboll345 (talk) 17:14, 6 August 2016 (UTC)

[edit]Hello there Samtar, from Portugal,
just to be on the safe, regarding this (please see here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Bot_requests#Conversion_of_links), did you read my follow-up to your doubt? If so and you are at a loss, what more info do you need? I'll provide it as soon as possible.

- @Be Quiet AL: As far as I understand, I believe this can be done with AWB? Mass changing the URL? Dat GuyTalkContribs 10:26, 27 July 2016 (UTC)
- @Be Quiet AL: sorry I've been a little busy, I'll take another look later today, but I think DatGuy is right with the ability of AWB to do a (regex?) find and replace -- samtar talk or stalk 10:28, 27 July 2016 (UTC)
As far as I know, in some cases (not sure if all) old URL has a different set of numbers attached to it than the new one (for example Simãozinho). So this is bad news, no? --Be Quiet AL (talk) 16:17, 27 July 2016 (UTC)

Revisions to Rysa Walker page
[edit]Hi, Samtar!
A reader just notified me that my page was in dire need of an update. She added some items earlier, but indicated that there were sections in the main text that needed revision, so I just went in and did it. It didn't occur to me that this might violate policy. Apologies!
At any rate, here are the edits that I made. I included citations for everything added and posted my official author photo.
If you or someone else could verify and check that the content isn't biased, I'd appreciate the help. As a long time Wikipedia user, I really hate for my readers to see an incomplete page.
Sincerely, Rysa Walker — Preceding unsigned comment added by rysawalker (talk • contribs)
- @Rysawalker: Hi there - thanks for leaving me a message. I've moved the below to Draft:Rysa Walker where I would encourage you to work on it further (if needed). Don't worry about violating any policies, all that matters is that you're aware of it and are open to discussing any changes you'd like to make. As for the changes you've already made, I will look over them and let you know if I see any issues, but you should be alright. If you'd like to make any further changes, please change Draft:Rysa Walker and then ask for it to be reviewed. Happy editing, and again thank you for taking the time to speak to us regarding your conflict of interest -- samtar talk or stalk 15:45, 25 July 2016 (UTC)
Thanks, @Samtar. I made one small change, since it was linking to the wrong St. Andrews University, but otherwise it's good to go. Thanks so much for your help!! Rysawalker (talk) 16:18, 25 July 2016 (UTC)
- Acknowledged Hi Rysawalker - been super busy recently, and I will be for the next hour or so. I'll try to check into this soon! -- samtar talk or stalk 18:49, 28 July 2016 (UTC)

[edit]Hi Sam. I hope you're well. Regarding our discussion earlier, I wanted to check whether mainstream foreign media can also be regarded as suitable sources? Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Problems
- Last week Tech News announced you will get a notification when you mention yourself the same way as if someone else had mentioned you. This caused some problems and will happen later instead. [13]
- Creating and editing links to sections on other pages on the wiki now works again in the visual editor. [14]
- For some users, cross-wiki notifications haven't been working properly. The count has been wrong when only cross-wiki notifications were present. The cross-wiki bundle has been showing only the names of wikis and not the actual notifications. This will be fixed soon. [15][16]
Changes this week
- The login session when you choose "Keep me logged in" will now last a year. Previously it was 30 days. This will happen on August 16. [17]
- Some abuse filters will have to be updated during the week. This is because a bug will be fixed. [18]
- In compact language links, two new kinds of languages will be shown in the shorter language list: Languages that are used in the article's text, and languages where the article has a badge like "featured article" or "good article". [19][20]
- The visual editor will be available by default for logged-out editors on Wikipedias that use the Arabic script. It is already default for logged-in editors. [21]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from August 16. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from August 17. It will be on all wikis from August 18 (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on August 16 at 19:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- Starting the week of August 22 there will be three software deployment windows. They will be at 13:00, 18:00, and 23:00 UTC. This is to have more times when software of the wikis can be updated and make it easier for developers in different parts of the world. [22]

Proposed deletion of Calais blockade
[edit]The article Calais blockade has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- No indication of independent notability. Just a footnote in the Calais migrant crisis (1999-present article. Wikipedia is not a newspaper so does not need to carry these news stories as separate articles.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. noq (talk) 14:56, 5 September 2016 (UTC)
- @Noq: I've added a little more to the article in a hope to show the independent notability of the event - this is the first time the Association of Calais Traders have used a physical method of protesting against the migrant camp, which I believe is a rather important "step" in the ongoing crisis.
- I believe this article meets the relevant notability guidelines, namely due to the following reasons:
- Lasting effects: As I stated above, this a first for a large group within the ongoing crisis, and is likely to be
a precedent
for future protests. - Geographical scope: A quick search clearly shows the geographical scope of the ongoing even.
- Depth of coverage: I believe this is met through multiple major news outlets providing entire stories to the event, as
coverage must be significant and not in passing
. - Duration of coverage: As the event is ongoing, this cannot be met, but I would like to draw your attention to the statement
That an event occurred recently does not in itself make it non-notable
- Diversity of sources: I think this is covered, but I would welcome your input here - I would agree that most sources are basically reporting the same thing, but there are different angles at play. For example, The Financial Times's article (obviously) focuses on the financial impact the protest is currently causing, making statements such as
Property values around the camp have fallen
. In contrast, The Daily Mail focuses more on the human protesters who have formed barriers.
- Lasting effects: As I stated above, this a first for a large group within the ongoing crisis, and is likely to be
- Do you have any further opinions or suggestions which may help show the notability? Thanks, and I welcome any further questions or comments -- samtar talk or stalk 15:24, 5 September 2016 (UTC)

pageswap script for convenience
[edit]Hi Samtar, I've noticed that you performed round-robin page moves at some point. Thought I'd share a new script here (js) that semi-automates page swaps for convenience, if you ever encounter the scenario. You'd simply click "Swap" and enter a page destination, the script performs the 3 moves as necessary (saves time having to manually go through the move form 3 times). (It doesn't correct redirects afterwards, that's still manual)
Anyway, just an FYI, feel free to adapt this script as you see fit, cheers :) — Andy W. (talk · ctb) 02:57, 25 August 2016 (UTC)
- @Andy Never got around to thanking you for the script - I've given it a go, it works brilliantly! It'll definately help -- samtar talk or stalk 07:13, 1 September 2016 (UTC)
