[edit]Sam could u tell me how do i cancel a draft i submitted for creation by mistake VarunFEB2003 (talk • contribs) 08:49, 20 June 2016 (UTC)
- Hi VarunFEB2003, if you're referring to Draft:Constitution-Talca Ramal then there's no way of deactivating a submitted draft - you've got a couple of weeks until someone reviews it, and if it fails it won't be deleted or anything, you'll just get a message saying why it failed and what you can do to fix it. You'll then be able to continue to work on it. That being said, after a quick glance it looks very good and it may pass -- samtar talk or stalk 08:58, 20 June 2016 (UTC)
- Thnx -- VarunFEB2003 (talk • contribs) 07:46, 21 June 2016 (UTC)
Sorry your experience with that editor was so bad. I've added back in the list of programs in each institute in prose with inline references that the editor did provide in one edit. I believe that that is acceptable. My translations of the entries from the references (as well as the title of the references is a combination of that editor and Google Translate, so I'm not *that* sure. I'll keep it on my watchlist.Naraht (talk) 21:08, 16 June 2016 (UTC)
- Thank you Naraht! I'm used to the behavior by now, just that editor irked me a bit with the amount of time I spent trying to help them :( thank you for improving the article -- samtar talk or stalk 21:18, 16 June 2016 (UTC)
- And it still feels like the major issue is that the article in Arabic (rightly or wrongly) used lists for the programs.Naraht (talk) 01:31, 17 June 2016 (UTC)

Informal review of future GA
[edit]Hey samtar, what's up? I've been working on Laticauda colubrina recently with the aim to bring the mostly-neglected article to GA status. So far I've focused on the ==Venom== section down, and if those are done I can move on to the upper sections and opening which are in dire need of improvement. Since you do a lot of GA reviews, could you offer your informal opinion on whether Laticauda colubrina#Venom and the sections below ==Venom== would pass a GAN? Cheers. Sn1per (talk) 00:55, 19 June 2016 (UTC)
- @Sn1per: Sure, I'd be happy to Give me 20 minutes or so and I'll ping you with an opinion and any suggestions to improve -- samtar talk or stalk 09:19, 19 June 2016 (UTC)
- @Sn1per: This article has a good chance of passing the GA criteria, based on the following opinions:
- Criteria 1a and 1b: I could not find any spelling or grammatical errors, though a lot of the language used is biology-specific so I can't be sure.
- Criteria 2a-d: All references are in-line and from reliable sources, with an absence of both original research and copyright violation.
- Criteria 3a and 3b: The headers used suggest the main aspects of the topic have been addressed, and does not seem to go into unnecessary detail. Biology is not an area I am confident to make technical reviews in, so I would possibly defer to a second editor, however for myself it's a
- Criteria 4: Difficult to review, however there does not seem to be any editorial bias.
- Criteria 5: Article is stable from content disputes.
- Criteria 6a and 6b: All the images are from commons, are relevant to the article and are captioned.
- I hope the above has helped, and thank you for your detailed additions to the article - regardless of attaining GA status you are helping make Wikipedia even better -- samtar talk or stalk 09:55, 19 June 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks for your time, I really appreciate it. I'll go ahead and move on to the other sections and I expect to nominate for GA very soon. Cheers. Sn1per (talk) 16:01, 19 June 2016 (UTC)

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- The ORES service has now moved to a new location. This should make it easier to use ORES. The ORES review service is now available as a beta feature on Wikidata and Persian Wikipedia. ORES is an artificial intelligence system for Wikimedia wikis to help editors. [1]
- The order of wikis in collapsed cross-wiki notifications was different than when the list was expanded. This is now fixed. [2]
- A new category for tracking pages with math errors was added: Category:Pages with math errors. [3]
Problems
- The Wikimedia Etherpad crashed on June 23. Some edits done that day have been lost. They can be found at etherpad-restore.wikimedia.org for another few days. [4][5]
Changes this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 28 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 29 June. It will be on all wikis from 30 June (calendar).
- The way to mark notifications as read or unread will be changed to be more clear. [6]
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 28 June at 19:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- The Collaboration team at the Wikimedia Foundation will look at developing better tools for edit review. This is because research suggests we scare away newcomers who want to help. [7]
- An e-mail from the Editing Department explains the technical work that is planned and being researched for the future. Items include better wikitext and visual editing, prompts for edits, language improvements, annotations, and meta-data separation. [8]
- The sorting of Notifications into the two fly-out menus is going to change on July 5 to 7. Bundled notifications should be easier to explore and mark as read individually. [9][10][11]
- From 29 June git.wikimedia.org (running Gitblit) will redirect all requests to Phabricator. The vast majority of requests should be correctly redirected. [12]
- Catalan and Polish Wikipedias will have Wikidata descriptions added to articles in the mobile view by default. This is currently a beta option for the mobile versions. This might come to other wikis later. [13]

Editing News #2—2016

Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor team has fixed many bugs. Their workboard is available in Phabricator. Their current priorities are improving support for Arabic and Indic scripts, and adapting the visual editor to the needs of the Wikivoyages and Wikisources.
Recent changes
[edit]The visual editor is now available to all users at most Wikivoyages. It was also enabled for all contributors at the French Wikinews.
The single edit tab feature combines the "Edit" and "Edit source" tabs into a single "Edit" tab. It has been deployed to several Wikipedias, including Hungarian, Polish, English and Japanese Wikipedias, as well as to all Wikivoyages. At these wikis, you can change your settings for this feature in the "Editing" tab of Special:Preferences. The team is now reviewing the feedback and considering ways to improve the design before rolling it out to more people.
Future changes
[edit]The "Save page" button will say "Publish page". This will affect both the visual and wikitext editing systems. More information is available on Meta.
The visual editor will be offered to all editors at the remaining "Phase 6" Wikipedias during the next few months. The developers want to know whether typing in your language feels natural in the visual editor. Please post your comments and the language(s) that you tested at the feedback thread on mediawiki.org. This will affect several languages, including: Arabic, Hindi, Thai, Tamil, Marathi, Malayalam, Urdu, Persian, Bengali, Assamese, Aramaic and others.
The team is working with the volunteer developers who power Wikisource to provide the visual editor there, for opt-in testing right now and eventually for all users. (T138966)
The team is working on a modern wikitext editor. It will look like the visual editor, and be able to use the citoid service and other modern tools. This new editing system may become available as a Beta Feature on desktop devices around September 2016. You can read about this project in a general status update on the Wikimedia mailing list.
Let's work together
[edit]- Do you teach new editors how to use the visual editor? Did you help set up the Citoid automatic reference feature for your wiki? Have you written or imported TemplateData for your most important citation templates? Would you be willing to help new editors and small communities with the visual editor? Round-robin
[edit]Hi Samtar, I saw you fulfilled some of the technical requests at WP:RMT with round-robin moves. Just an FYI, I made talk page redirects from the old pages to the new ones for the sake of completeness. Jenks24 recently pinged me about this issue about not breaking incoming talk page links, and I thought I'd share this with you as well.
For example, if page A had a talk page, 3 archives, and a good article nomination, swapping A and its subpages with B without the talk/subpages will turn the former A 's pages into redlinks. See WP:PMVR#rr for the details. Hope this only helps! Thanks — Andy W. (talk · ctb) 21:41, 27 June 2016 (UTC)

Recent changes
- A new image scaler fixed a number of bugs for showing SVG files. Some new problems turned up. [16][17][18]
- Notifications are grouped by types. They are now counted by number of notifications and not by unread groups. That change may increase the number of notifications displayed. The earlier way of counting was often incorrect. Unread notifications will also be displayed first. [19][20][21]
- Special:Notifications now has a maximum width for the notifications list on desktop computers. This allows long titles and descriptions to be cut properly. Notifications are now also better parsed. [22][23][24]
Problems
- On 5 July Wikimedia Commons had problems and could not be edited for 20 minutes. For a short while after that the recent changes log and some gadgets were not working properly. It affected administrative actions on other projects too. [25]
- Users who have multiple unread notifications can mark them as read by visiting Special:Notifications page on their wiki.
Changes this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 12 July. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 13 July. It will be on all wikis from 14 July (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 12 July at 19:00 (UTC). See how to join.

Your message
[edit]Thank you for your message. No, I don't have any problem being neutral, but I am being harassed by someone who is not neutral, SLBedit. I need help, I have not done anything, can you please talk to this user? Thanks, Jerappelle (talk) 18:15, 11 July 2016 (UTC)
You can look at his talk page and Tbhotch talk page, he has scared my friend, accuses me of trolling, he is being aggressive with me. By the way I am not new, I have been off Wikipedia for years, and now it is sad to see something like this. At least SLBedit could make an effort to talk, instead of aggressively getting his friend to write me, calling me a troll (for what?) and refusing to provide any justification for a small edit. Feel free to write back, thanks man. Jerappelle (talk) 18:20, 11 July 2016 (UTC)
- Refrain from calling me unneutral. I don't care if Garrido made mistakes. It was me that improved the article while ago. See history page. SLBedit (talk) 18:36, 11 July 2016 (UTC)
- @Jerappelle and SLBedit: I've had a quick look, and from what I can see this is regarding António Garrido (referee), correct? @Jerappelle: due to your personal relation with the article's subject, I'm sure you can appreciate that you may find it slightly more difficult to write from a neutral point of view. Could you describe the edits you wish to make? -- samtar talk or stalk 18:25, 11 July 2016 (UTC)
- This has nothing to with neutrality. The user is adding a YouTube link as a reliable source. SLBedit (talk) 18:33, 11 July 2016 (UTC)
- Also, the other source is Italian, so there is a conflict of interest there. SLBedit (talk) 18:48, 11 July 2016 (UTC)
samtar, I have no personal relation with the subject, on the other hand SLBedit does, it is quite the opposite. The changes are there, I wrote many times to SLBedit and he called me a troll, he did not answer, etc. In any case, that is not the problem, a small paragraph was added by my friend (friend's son, really) with a reference. He now added another reference, to make it stronger. I am not sure what the problem is. I wrote to SLBedit to explain what the problem is, but he is now angry at me. I understand he writes only about portuguese teams and maybe he does not want a portuguese referee criticised, but there are other issues with this referee mentioned in the article, and anyway they are all well documented. I think he cannot be objective, the video is in clear, the news reference also, I don't understand why he is making such a huge deal. I can understand it coming from a 17 years old (friend who edited), but I think SLBedit is older, isn't he? I really just want this put to rest. And no, I am nt a troll, and SLBedit should stop saying that. Thanks Jerappelle (talk) 18:34, 11 July 2016 (UTC)
samtar, can you please look at his talk page, I asked him, is the Youtube link the problem? What is the problem? Who's the troll? I ask question, and he just undoes changes and goes to other people to complain about me. I am a reasonable person. If we cannot have Youtube links will take it down, but I don't think that is the policy. The link is in English, it is an interview, it shows the issue reported in the wikipedia page. Another reference was added (in a foreign language, but all other references are also in a foreign language). I find he is being very aggressive, and I don't understand why. Jerappelle (talk) 18:38, 11 July 2016 (UTC)
- I do not have any relation with the subject of the article. On the other hand, you have a personal relation with the person (IP) edit warring. Stop accusing me of being angry, not neutral and other bullshit. To me, you were trolling, but I did not call you a troll. Please stop playing victim. Thank you. SLBedit (talk) 18:40, 11 July 2016 (UTC)
On Tbhotch page you wrote: "Why are you trolling?" You also called me a "sockpuppet of the IP". I saw the changes, they made sense, they were supported. I don't write about portuguese football or italian football all the time like you do, it seems to me you are not very objective and a little too interested in that. Tbhotch also said "You are technically edit-warring too". I have not done anything, instead. I asked if I should take the Youtube link down, first you said it is not a valid reference, then you said it is because it is copyrighted material. I asked you to explain, if you don't, who is edit warring? If I ask questions and you don't answer and just overreact, I do feel you are being too aggressive. I apologise it that offended you, can we move on? Should I remove the youtube link and leave the other reference? Would that be okay? Jerappelle (talk) 18:58, 11 July 2016 (UTC)
And I was cheering for Portugal yesterday and I am glad you guys won, by the way! Jerappelle (talk) 18:59, 11 July 2016 (UTC)
- YouTube source was already removed. SLBedit (talk) 19:06, 11 July 2016 (UTC)

- Hi Niezwmxa Boro, it would first be a good idea to withdraw your current request - after that I'd be more than happy to talk to you about why new editors aren't suited to be administrators. Don't be disappointed though, there's still a lot of maintenance tasks you can do without being an admin -- samtar talk or stalk 13:38, 12 July 2016 (UTC)

[edit]I'm a bit confused. Is there any other user besides Tseung Kwan O you're suspicious of? You can answer here, or e-mail me again.--Bbb23 (talk) 16:08, 14 July 2016 (UTC)

This article is an orphan
[edit]Dear Samtar,
i am not sure how you marked this article as orphan https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eenu_Shree where as i can see all articles under category [Actresses in Bhojpuri cinema] are similar.
Thanks Yagya Shree — Preceding unsigned comment added by Yagyashree (talk • contribs) 14:39, 14 July 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Yagyashree, we tag an article as an "orphan" when no other articles link to it. Orphan articles are a bit of an issue since because they have no links to them, they can be quite difficult to find. Perhaps you could suggest a couple of articles which could link to Eenu Shree? :) -- samtar talk or stalk 14:51, 14 July 2016 (UTC)

How to prevent wikipedia to write down my IP to database? As you have written on my talk page, I can consult with you. I know, wikipedia collects base of all users' (logged in or not) IPs. I don't want wikipedia to know my IP (even in hidden base). But almost all proxy IPs are blocked. So what should I do, to enter to wikipedia?
And is this collecting legal? Where is the guarantee that you will not sell the database?
Username160611000000 (talk) 05:48, 16 July 2016 (UTC)

- @Username160611000000: Still, I do not believe that MarnetteD was edit warring. Please check out the edit warring page. You said that your proxy IPs are blocked. - I noticed that after another user left a message. :) They removed a table detailing the international broadcast of the drama but I added the message back in and then I started a discussion with them in hope that they will tell me why they don't want it there, unfortunately I couldn't understand their edit summary so it made it hard to decipher why they were removing the information. Thanks again for cooperating with me. :) Sorry, I don't understand do you mean the nature of the Korean drama such as the story lines and themes? If you are meaning that, then yes haha they are quite similar, I like the thriller ones, they are a bit more different than the ones that are mainstream and popular. =D (101.160.50.41 (talk) 11:28, 19 July 2016 (UTC))

- @Oripaypaykim: I think I understand - the IP has replied below, and would like to know why you did not want the table there. Wikipedia is great when we can all work together and discuss things we don't agree on, but it's important to work through things calmly :) -- samtar talk or stalk 11:35, 19 July 2016 (UTC)

Hi A new idea
[edit]Hi Sam Like the collapse top or collapse bottom templates I wanted to create a template that collapsed text sideways, the same way it happens when you go to View History and click thank a user for his edit the text expands and shows another line. So I used Notepad++ and got the HTML code that produces the thank link. The code is as follows:
Extended content

<a class="mw-thanks-thank-link jquery-confirmable-element" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Thanks/730748894" title="Send a thank you notification to this user" data-revision-id="730748894" style="margin-left: 0px;">thank</a>Send public thanks for this edit? <a class="mw-thanks-thank-link jquery-confirmable-button jquery-confirmable-button-yes" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Thanks/730748894" title="Send the thank you notification" data-revision-id="730748894">Yes</a> <a class="mw-thanks-thank-link jquery-confirmable-button jquery-confirmable-button-no" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Thanks/730748894" title="Cancel the thank you notification" data-revision-id="730748894">No</a>)

bot request
[edit]Hi Samtar
I have made a bot request on Commons for adding a third category if an image appears in both categories. I have no idea if this would take 5 mins or a lot, but I would really appreciate it if you could take a look :)
Thanks
--John Cummings (talk) 12:15, 25 July 2016 (UTC)
- Hi John, good to hear from you again - I'll have a look! It looks like it would be quite easy, but I don't have any experience writing bots for Commons. I'll see if I can draft up an idea and will leave a comment there to help a more experienced bot operator get it going quicker. I've also just read that you work for UNESCO, that must be very interesting -- samtar talk or stalk 12:40, 25 July 2016 (UTC)
- Hi :), amazingly your very quick reply was too slow and someone is already on the case, thanks for the reply though :) --John Cummings (talk) 12:53, 25 July 2016 (UTC)

Tagging User talk:Gopatholabs
[edit]OK, I didn't know there should be some delay between a user account rename and redir deletion. Anyway I understand such delay is necessary when someone changes the valid name to a new one, say after change from 'QuickBrownFox' to 'Jake Malcolm', and wants to keep the history, especially when there's lots of links to the old user page and talk page. In this case, however, the old name was invalid and had almost no links from other places in Wikipedia, so I am pretty sure the redir is actually useless and qualifies to immediate deletion. But I'm not going to insist on it, anyway. --CiaPan (talk) 09:01, 25 July 2016 (UTC)
- @CiaPan: There's still a small number of links which would no longer work if the page was deleted, and I don't really see any benefit in deleting the page -- samtar talk or stalk 09:10, 25 July 2016 (UTC)
