Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- Ordinary pages can no longer be loaded as javascript. You could do this using
?action=raw&ctype=text/javascript
in the URL. Only fully protected pages in the MediaWiki: namespace or user javascript subpages can be loaded as javascript now. This is for better security. [1][2]
Problems
- New and updated translations from translatewiki.net will not reach the wikis for a while. You can still translate messages on translatewiki.net. The Wikimedia wikis will be updated with the new translations later. This is because of work on the translation system. [3][4]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 2 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 3 October. It will be on all wikis from 4 October (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 3 October at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
- You can join the meeting with the Wikimedia Foundation Search Platform team. The meeting will be on 3 October at 15:00 UTC. See how to join if you want to know how the search function works or have questions.
Future changes
- Because of a data centre test you will be able to read but not edit the wikis for up to an hour on 10 October. This will start at 14:00 (UTC). You might lose edits if you try to save during this time. The time when you can't edit might be shorter than an hour. You can read more about this.

Content isn't a copyright's violation:
Hello,
You said I violated copyrights when I didn't, John D. Arwood is a local business owner in my area and since I wanted to create my first Bio here, with his permission, he allowed for the use of up to five images to update thing that are factual and uphold all of the rules this community has. Please take my message of an apology if i didn't express this before but, legally I have not violated any copyrights.
Thank you! Everlearningonline (talk) 05:31, 5 October 2018 (UTC)
- It is, actually. You've uploaded your media to Wikimedia Commons, which has a policy of accepting only freely licensed content, and nothing else. These images appeared on a copyrighted website before you have uploaded them, therefore constituing a copyright violation, and so they'll have to be deleted. Also, please see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest; you should not be making any edits on someone else's behalf. theinstantmatrix (talk) 05:46, 5 October 2018 (UTC)
It isn't a copyrights violation
Works are copyrighted by default, even though you think there isn't a copyright on it. If you asked someone to write their biography for them here, then it is indeed a conflict of interest. Also, please see Wikipedia:Core content policies, Wikipedia:Notability, and fully read Wikipedia:Conflict of interest again. theinstantmatrix (talk) 19:51, 5 October 2018 (UTC) |

The following discussion has been closed. Please do not modify it. |
Dear Theinstantmatrix, It isn't a copyrights violation because the image isn't owned, they don't copyright it, you argued the image isn't in the website and now you're saying it is, to then scrutinize the fact that it's copyright when it was never released as a product or anything. They released it through events and generated hype for this year. I'm writing about it, not by his behalf but because it's interesting. A local waste company is trying to create a concept/spacecraft to solve the space junk/debris issue. I thought it would be worthwhile to put on wikipedia, isn't that what this community is all about? To write about local things we see and share it for the whole world to learn? I am not being biased. I never said any of their stuff worked, i just wrote that they claim, as i should. Because it's the truth. I don't get whats wrong. Sincerely. Everlearningonline (talk) 19:35, 5 October 2018 (UTC) |

Interface administrator changes
- Cyberpower678 • Deryck Chan • Oshwah • Pharos • Ragesoss • Ritchie333

- There is an open request for comment on Meta regarding the creation a new user group for global edit filter management.
- Partial blocks should be available for testing in October on the Test Wikipedia and the Beta-Cluster. This new feature allows admins to block users from editing specific pages and in the near-future, namespaces and uploading files. You can expect more updates and an invitation to help with testing once it is available.
- The Foundations' Anti-Harassment Tools team is currently looking for input on how to measure the effectiveness of blocks. This is in particular related to how they will measure the success of the aforementioned partial blocks.
- Because of a data centre test, you will be able to read but not edit the Wikimedia projects for up to an hour on 10 October. This will start at 14:00 (UTC). You might lose edits if you try to save during this time.
- The Arbitration Committee has, by motion, amended the procedure on functionary inactivity.
- The community consultation for 2018 CheckUser and Oversight appointments has concluded. Appointments will be made by October 11.
- Following a request for comment, the size of the Arbitration Committee will be decreased to 13 arbitrators, starting in 2019. Additionally, the minimum support percentage required to be appointed to a two-year term on ArbCom has been increased to 60%. ArbCom candidates who receive between 50% and 60% support will be appointed to one-year terms instead.
- Nominations for the 2018 Arbitration Committee Electoral Commission are being accepted until 12 October. These are the editors who help run the ArbCom election smoothly. If you are interested in volunteering for this role, please consider nominating yourself.

Recent changes
- The Education Program extension was removed from all Wikimedia projects. You can use the Programs and Events Dashboard or the Fountain instead. [5]
Problems
- There was a problem when you copied and pasted from a table with the visual editor. It could add
href
where it shouldn't be. This has now been fixed. [6]
Changes later this week
- Because of a data centre test you will be able to read but not edit the wikis for up to an hour on 10 October. This will start at 14:00 (UTC). You might lose edits if you try to save during this time. The time when you can't edit might be shorter than an hour. You can read more about this.
- Because of the data centre test there will be no new version of MediaWiki this week. Changes for this week will come next week instead.

Problems
- Some pages, edits and users disappeared for a short while after the server switch. Missing content and users was fixed within a day. Some preferences and other things might take a few more days to fix. [7]
- Wikis are updated with new and updated translations from translatewiki.net again. This will happen once a week. The developers are working on fixing the problem so we can have translation updates more often again. [8]
Changes later this week
- When you create an abuse filter that prevents edits you can now write a specific error message for it. Before this all abuse filters that prevented edits had the same error message. [9]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 16 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 17 October. It will be on all wikis from 18 October (calendar).
Meetings
- There will be no more meetings with the Editing team. This is because not enough Wikimedians were interested. To tell developers which bugs you think are the most important you can use Phabricator as normal. [10]
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 17 October at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.

Deletion maintenance
This request for help from administrators has been answered. If you need more help or have additional questions, please reapply the {{admin help}} template, or contact the responding user(s) directly on their own user talk page. |
Can an admin delete this page from my user space? I can't edit this page to add a U1 template, because I've moved it from User:Theinstantmatrix/up-image.css to User:Theinstantmatrix/upmods/image, and then reverted it, locking myself out from editing that moved page as its content model is now different.
Thanks. theinstantmatrix (talk) 20:48, 18 October 2018 (UTC)

Violence against Indians in Australia controversy
Wow! That was a lightning quick reversion of my very clumsy attempt at an edit (sorry, but I’m using an IPad which I find awkward & I accidentally published the edit without finishing the edit summary). I’ll have another go at the edit, which involves deleting the irrelevant & out-of-date section, and hopefully this time I’ll manage to complete the edit summary fully & correctly.
Just so you understand the detailed reasons why this section should be deleted, I’ve followed the ongoing reports of the terrible crime this section refers to, and I’ve checked the most recent reports on the consequent court case. This court case has made clear that the murder was a random attack and was not driven by racism. Evidence tendered to the court showed that the cause of the attack was extreme psychiatric illness, including schizophrenia and psychosis, & the attacker was found unfit to stand trial for this reason. Since the core theme of the article is racially motivated violence (a fact that should be reflected in the title, but is not), this makes the mention of this crime superfluous to this article. In addition, the current text is about 2 years out of date and does not reflect the court’s findings.
For these reasons, the section does not deserve to be in this article and should be deleted.
I hope you accept my good faith in making this edit.
Cheers! 203.39.222.146 (talk) 11:49, 30 October 2018 (UTC)
- Go ahead and make the edit again then. Just be sure to provide a complete edit summary and try not to be clumsy. theinstantmatrix (talk) 11:59, 30 October 2018 (UTC)
Endowment (Mormonism)
Hello,
I am quite unsure as to how any of the revisions I have made are "disruptive" in any way. There are photos on the page that are very sensitive to the sensibilities of Latter-day Saints. Not only were these taken in a temple, places in which filming/photography is forbidden, but they are of things of the most sacred nature to Latter-day Saints. If a compromise is needed, then I am willing to accept the photograph of the woman in her temple robes seated in a chair, but the picture of the man at the veil is highly inappropriate and offensive to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Please, I ask that you be willing to work with me here on this matter. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.200.90.76 (talk) 20:30, 31 October 2018 (UTC)
- 98.200.90.76,
- If you are going to remove the images from the article, you are to use the article's talk page and gain consensus there, since these images have been in place for quite sometime now and that you are reverted by multiple users. Moreover, remember that Wikipedia is not censored and it's therefore inappropriate to remove the images just because it would offend a certain group. The IPs before you (66.219.235.33, 66.102.16.36) also tried to remove images based on that reasoning.
- If you, or more IPs keep on persistently removing images without providing other than the "It's offensive/not meant to be displayed publicly" or any similar reason, then I'm afraid the article may need to be semi-protected to prevent further disruption. theinstantmatrix (talk) 20:55, 31 October 2018 (UTC)
