Genre removal
Hi, i fail to see the point in your edit right here: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Tony_Bennett&diff=prev&oldid=1166424193 why remove this? How is anyone supposed to know now what type of music this singer makes? --FMSky (talk) 15:48, 23 July 2023 (UTC)
- Because I think the previous first sentence was too long. That's obviously one of many sloppy edits I've made. I admit the genres should definitely be included in the lead. Thedarkknightli (talk) 16:47, 23 July 2023 (UTC)

Kindly explain your reasons for reverting this edit. The article clearly states that Connelly is of Irish and Norwegian descent on her paternal side, and Jewish descent on her mother's. Dr. Simon Hurt (talk) 15:35, 24 August 2023 (UTC)
- According to WP:ETHNICRACECAT, “the ethnicity of grandparents (or other ancestors) is never defining and rarely notable”. Thedarkknightli (talk) 16:11, 24 August 2023 (UTC)
- This is a bit baffling, as countless articles on Wikipedia have been using the same types of categories on the basis on ancestral lineage (e.g., grandparents, great-grandparents) for some time now. I also have to question why said categories exist in the first place if "descent" is just limited to parental nationality. FYI, Merriam-Webster describes descent as having "derivation from an ancestor", while Cambridge defines it as "the state or fact of being related to a particular person or group of people who lived in the past."
- So, again, I find it quite odd that any guideline would limit these ethnic descent categories to parental nationality, which isn't even the same thing as ethnicity.
- Thanks for your timely response, though. I'll have to research this some more and follow up with you at another time. Dr. Simon Hurt (talk) 00:38, 25 August 2023 (UTC)
- Hello again. Would you be willing to expand on the subject a bit more?
- As per the content of the article, Connelly is of Irish and Norwegian descent through her father, correct? We also know that Connelly comes from a Jewish ethnic background by way of her mother; you recently added Category: American people of Jewish descent to reflect that.
- Given that both of Connelly's parents derive their ethnicity through their own parents, i.e., Jennifer's maternal and paternal grandparents, why is it acceptable to include the aforementioned Jewish descent category and not the other two (or one, at the very least) pertaining to her father's ethnic background? Note: The category for American people of Irish descent explicitly states the following: "notable citizens of the United States of Irish ethnicity or with Irish ancestry, whether partial or full."
- Please provide a thorough explanation as to why you feel it's necessary to omit only the categories pertaining to Connelly's paternal ethnic background.
- Thank you. Dr. Simon Hurt (talk) 03:23, 26 August 2023 (UTC)

Most biography infoboxes have nationality and citizenship. Generally, use of either should be avoided when the country to which the subject belongs can be inferred from the country of birth, as specified with |birthplace=
." So, according to you, because the infobox says he was born in "Northampton, England" we can infer his nationality as British! That's ridiculous - he could equally be German, French, American or Japanese, who just happened to be born in England. English is not a nationality any more than are Scottish or Welsh. Place of birth is not necessarilty a determinant of nationality. By way of example, no one born in the UAE to foreign parents can ever have UAE nationality and my wife, born in Harrow, Middlesex, is Irish! Emeraude (talk) 16:18, 3 September 2023 (UTC)
- What on earth are you talking about? You should discuss it with fellow editors before making any potentially controversial edits like this. Thedarkknightli (talk) 16:45, 3 September 2023 (UTC)
