Tips
  • Don't be afraid to edit! Just find something that can be improved and make it better. Other editors will help fix any mistakes you make.
  • It's normal to feel a little overwhelmed, but don't worry if you don't understand everything at first—it's fine to edit using common sense.
  • If an edit you make is reverted, you can discuss the issue at the article's talk page. Be civil, and don't restore the edit unless there is consensus.
  • Always use edit summaries to explain your changes.
  • When adding new content to an article, always include a citation to a reliable source.
  • If you wish to edit about a subject with which you are affiliated, read our conflict of interest guide and disclose your connection.
  • Have fun! Your presence in the Wikipedia community is welcome.

Happy editing! Cheers, Devokewater 10:50, 4 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Overlinking

[edit]

Hi - I have reverted a few of your edits, such as at International Cricket Council, for overlinking - so I have come to explain the reason.
As explained at ‎ WP:OVERLINKING we only link the first use of a term in any main section of an article, and we do not normally link:-

  • Everyday words understood by most readers.
  • Names familiar to most readers, including;- major countries, major cities, major languages, major nationalities/ethnicities and major religions
  • Common units of measurement, years and dates

There are many articles where these are already, incorrectly, linked; however, we are trying to reduce this, not increase it - Thanks - Arjayay (talk) 12:03, 4 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Arjayay,
I appreciate you taking the time to explain the rationale behind reverting some of my edits. I reviewed the Wikipedia manual of style again and understand the goal of avoiding over-linking.
However, I humbly disagree that all of the links I added constitute over-linking. The research on hyperlinking suggests that judicious use of links improves reader comprehension, navigation, and retention of information.
For example, this meta-analysis published in Educational Psychologist in 2018 analysed 46 studies on hyperlinking in online text. It found that links have consistently positive effects on learning, especially for navigation-oriented links that help tie ideas together. [1]
While linking every occurrence of common words would be excessive, some repetition seems beneficial based on the evidence. I attempted to add context-relevant links in a moderate, strategic way. However, I'm open to feedback if any links seem extraneous or disruptive to you. Perhaps we could agree on a happy medium that balances readability with supporting reader comprehension? I'm happy to discuss this further and appreciate you taking the time to explain your reasoning. Let me know your thoughts on the research and if you have any other guidelines for me.

A tag has been placed on Peter Kelk requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a band or musician that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator.
