Excellent essay, but I have some suggestions

[edit]

This is a really good essay, and deserves wider circulation. However, think that the bit on sourcing is too narrow as it appears to assume that POV pushers only use non-academic sources. Given the huge number academic journals which are now easily available to anyone with access to a university library's database, and the varying quality of some of these academics and journals, there's a problem with POV pushers cherry picking non-mainstream academic views to advance their case while largely ignoring mainstream opinion on the topic. The giveaways for this behavior are that the resulting articles are normally largely referenced to scholars who are little known in the field or journals which don't focus on the topic, and contains only passing references to the better-known scholars. Throw in some dense prose and references to obscure offline books, and you've got a scholarly-looking but totally POV article that takes a lot of effort to unpick.
