Nazi germany was not and never was a republic

The Nazis came to power under the constitution of the Weimar republic, then governed under the Enabling Act of 1933. So Germany remained a republic, but it would be odd wording to say that Nazi Germany was a republic. I don't think that countries cease to be republics when they become dictatorships, unless the dictator becomes a king or emperor. TFD (talk) 18:27, 16 May 2013 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Similar to the end of the Roman Republic, defining the end of the republic is difficult. There is also ambiguity in the question as stated, as to when "Nazi Germany" began. The party existed and started growing in popularity from the mid 20s. They had 18% of the vote in 1930, and in 1932 "became the largest party in the reichstag by a wide margin". Hitler was elected in 1933 with the enabling act shortly after. not until 1934 were the Chancellery and Presidency merged and Hitler declared to be the sole Fuhrer. Even after that, I think one could make an argument that Germany was still technically a republic, as the Enabling Act had to be renewed (although certainly they were a puppet group by then), and while Hitler had plenary powers, many laws were still passed via the Reichstag. Certainly the transition away from true republic was much quicker than in Rome or other known examples, but I think one cannot say "It was never a republic". Gaijin42 (talk) 19:06, 16 May 2013 (UTC)
