Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to Marital rape may have broken the syntax by modifying 2 "[]"s. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

List of unpaired brackets remaining on the page:
  • * [[Somalia]] <ref>[http://www.eassi.org/somalia "There are no laws prohibiting domestic violence, spousal rape")[</ref>

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, BracketBot (talk) 00:17, 5 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Marital rape

[edit]

The source that you are citing to add countries in the section "Countries where spousal rape is not a criminal offence" is this one [1] which is based on this report: [2]. Please understand that this report only lists countries which explicitly criminalize marital rape. Where it says "no", it means that it is not explicitly criminalized (ie. that there isn't a specific "Marital Rape" law, or that the law does not explicitly make any reference to marital rape). It does not mean that the 'ordinary' rape law does not cover marital rape.

To give you only the example of Japan, according to the US Country Reports on Human Rights Practices for 2013, [3] (see section on Women)

"The law criminalizes all forms of rape involving force against women, including spousal rape, and the government generally enforced the law effectively. The law defines rape as “a person who, through assault or intimidation, forcibly commits sexual intercourse with a female of not less than 13 years of age.” 2A02:2F0A:506F:FFFF:0:0:BC1B:459D (talk) 23:06, 5 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I have placed my answers on the "Questions" and "Countries where spousal rape is a criminal offence/not criminalized" sections on the talk page. To summaries what I believe we should do is:

  • Keep the map
  • Keep the list, but state a note saying "Some of the sources are not highly authentic and therefore should not always be taken into consideration. Please view the talk page for more information"
  • The countries with contradictory information should either be blanked out (ignored), or there should be a new section/list for it which states that the following countries are in an "doubtful" area when it comes to finding out whether it is criminalized or not.
  • The only countries which should be on the list are the ones which directly state whether it is criminalized or not criminalized.
  • There can be another section for the "countries where marital rape is not explicitly criminalized" and "countries where marital rape is not covered by the 'ordinary' rape laws" which you pointed out (or it can be together).

I hope this helped.
