Thank you

[edit]

Thanks for the kind welcome :D . That really helps, I posted on the wikipedia help desk, since I didnt know about the tea house, which would have been a better way to go. I do have a few questions though, if thats okay:

  1. The first thing I would like to know is wether this is actually the right way to reply to you.
  2. Do I delete my post on the Talk page after it has been resolved so it doesnt get too convoluted?
  3. Can you actually edit what I write right now without my permission?
  4. And the second one also is about categories: Almost every mathematics page isn't in the category mathematics, shouldn't the category be somehow inherited?
  5. I have a link set to a random mathematics page set as my start page. I keep getting the same sites, because the majority of the mathematics pages arent in the mathematics category, how can I set this up?

Thanks again! TheFibonacciEffect (talk) 18:39, 21 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, glad to answer your questions. I hope you don't mind, I am changing your bullet points to numbers so I can reply to them one-by-one. Generally, we should not edit other users' comments.
  1. You can reply to me here or on the film article's talk page, depending on the subject matter. For example, here is the best place for me to reply to you about your Wikipedia questions. On the talk page for Jurassic Park, we can talk more about the category as it applies to the topic. If you are reading WP:CATEGORY and had a question about its content, you can start a discussion thread on its talk page.
  2. You do not have to delete your comments. On user talk pages, you can set up some code to automatically archive older discussions based on the datetime stamps. Articles' talk pages can be set up the same way too. On your own user talk page, you have the right to blank old discussions entirely, or archive them, or leave them. On an article's talk page, blanking is frowned upon unless it is not related to editing the topic's article. For example, someone commenting "Jurassic Park is one of my favorite movies, who agrees with me?" That would be outside the scope of what an article's talk page is for.
  3. I can edit your comment, just as I did by changing the bullets into numbers. However, a page always has a history of edits, so one can see who made what edit. If someone tried to edit your comment to make you sound like you said something you didn't, the page history can reveal this mischief. In my experience, because of this transparency, that mischief rarely happens (and is easily reverted).
  4. I'm not very familiar with categories (they just frustrate me too much when it comes to films and genre classifications and topic relativity being too subjective), but my understanding is that most articles get filed away under subcategories. There may be some tool that can show you all the articles that have subcategories that are ultimately under Category:Mathematics, but I don't think Wikipedia itself makes that readily available. Hopefully someone can give better insight about categories than me.
  5. I'm not familiar with the Random feature's capabilities. One possible way to set up what you're looking for is to find the right Random feature that can give you any article that has Template:Maths banner on its talk page. It looks like User talk:GregU/randomlink.js may have what you're looking for.
If you are interested in mathematics in general, I suggest checking out its WikiProject, Wikipedia:WikiProject Mathematics, and its talk page Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Mathematics. You could post a new discussion thread saying hi, and editors involved with that WikiProject can help you out. Any more questions, feel free to ask! I'll try my best.
