Please bear these points in mind while editing Wikipedia

The Wikipedia tutorial is a good place to start learning about Wikipedia. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump or ask me on my talk page. By the way, you can sign your name on Talk and discussion pages using four tildes, like this: ~~~~ (the software will replace them with your signature and the date). Again, welcome!

Hello Tfossen,

It seems to me that an article you worked on, Thor I. Fossen, may be copied from http://www.itk.ntnu.no/ansatte/Fossen_Thor/. It's entirely possible that I made a mistake, but I wanted to let you know because Wikipedia is strict about copying from other sites.

It's important that you edit the article and rewrite it in your own words, unless you're absolutely certain nothing in it is copied. If you're not sure how to fix the problem or have any questions, there are people at the help desk who are happy to assist you.

Thank you for helping build a free encyclopedia! MadmanBot (talk) 10:29, 20 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Conflict of Interest and user name problems

[edit]

There are policies here which attempt to protect Wikipedia from misuse. Among these is WP:COI, when the editor has an undocumented conflict of interest with the article subject. For instance, if you were Thor I. Fossen and were writing about yourself. Or you were someone "who knew him" or "worked with him" or the like situation. Another situation is where someone impersonates the subject of the article, and introduces subtle or blatant misinformation. These and many more bad situations have been seen here.

Another policy here to know about is WP:USERNAME. I don't remember how to reassure Wikipedia that your user name User:Tfossen is or is not the real "Tfossen".

It's a big world, with bad actors, and all the bad misuses have already been seen here at Wikipedia. So people here are very likely to react severely to perceived misuse. Severely includes deleting the article Thor I. Fossen completely (make a copy now) and blocking your edits.

As a first step, read policies WP:COI and WP:USERNAME. Oh, and WP:BIO because of the article's subject. Then read the article very carefully, considering how every single statement can be documented with a citation. (upset people get very judgemental)

I'm just an editor that fixes misspellings (see the history). But I try to notice when a friendly warning might help. So far you've only had friendly Wikipedians drop by. Good luck. Shenme (talk) 03:39, 28 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I have sent you a note about a page you started

Hi Tfossen. Thank you for your work on Fossen's marine craft model. Another editor, Ldm1954, has reviewed it as part of new pages patrol and left the following comment:

It is not clear why this page should exist as against being a redirect to the section on Fossen's page. Currently it is a textbook entry without clear evidence of notability. Not everything be\longs on Wikipedia.

To reply, leave a comment here and begin it with {{Re|Ldm1954}}. (Message delivered via the Page Curation tool, on behalf of the reviewer.)

@Ldm1954: The biographical description of Thor I. Fossen, that is me, did have an overlap with the newly created wiki page "Fossen's marine craft model", which I created today. I have solved this issue by deleting the conflicting paragraph under the "Thor I. Fossen" wiki page. I am the author of both wiki pages, and I am also the person who derived/published this model formulation in my PhD thesis in 1991. Hence, there are no copyright issues. You must read the article on COI editing, this is heavily frowned upon. You should not be editing either this page or your autobiography, you must submit requests for changes. Since this was mentioned some time ago you should know this. Ldm1954 (talk) 19:26, 16 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I am sorry but I was not aware of these policies. I have no idea how to resolve this. Please feel to remove the article from Wikipedia. Tfossen (talk) 19:41, 16 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You need to declare that you have a COI on your user page. There is a template you can use for this, or just state it in text (which is what I have done, as has @David Eppstein). What you probably need to do with your bio is ask someone to check it for you, perhaps David Eppstein will as he did a little cleaning earlier; he will probably have better suggestions. For the marine craft article maybe ask for a review at the WT:PHYSICS page. It is not an area that I know enough about to feel comfortable with verifying it for COI.
