User talk:TerraNova whatcanidotomakethisnottoosimilartosomeothername
Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia!
I hope not to seem unfriendly or make you feel unwelcome, but I noticed your username, and I am concerned that it might not meet Wikipedia's username policy for the following reason: A strange, overlong and just plain confusing username! Is it slang or a rude and/or offencive code word or phrze?. After you look over that policy, could we discuss that concern here?
I'd appreciate learning your own views, for instance your reasons for wanting this particular name, and what alternative username you might accept that avoids raising this concern.
You have several options freely available to you:
- If you can relieve my concern through discussing it here, I can stop worrying about it.
- If the two of us can't agree here, we can ask for help through Wikipedia's dispute resolution process, such as requesting comments from other Wikipedians. Wikipedia administrators usually abide by agreements reached through this process.
- You can keep your contributions history under a new username. Visit Wikipedia:Changing username and follow the guidelines there.
Thank you.

overly long and may be confusing for some editors
- thanks for giving me the chance to answer you before bringing down the hammer of the admins wrath straight down on me. :)
I'd appreciate learning your own views, for instance your reasons for wanting this particular name, and what alternative username you might accept that avoids raising this concern.
- Actually, its pretty simple: TerraNova has been my internet "pen-name" for as long as i have used the net. Naturally, it was taken at Wikipedia, and the obvious variations where blocked due to being too similar. So i tried my real name, and it was likewise blocked. After trying to revive an older nickname of mine (and finding that one taken, too), i decided to use an (admittedly rather long) suffix that i was sure to remember, and go with my first choice.
You have several options freely available to you:
- If you can relieve my concern through discussing it here, I can stop worrying about it.
- If the two of us can't agree here, we can ask for help through Wikipedia's dispute resolution process, such as asking for a "third opinion", or requesting comments from other Wikipedians. Admins usually abide by agreements reached through this process.
- If you decide to just go ahead and change your username, it is possible for you to keep your present contributions history under the new username: simply request a new name here following the guidelines on that page, rather than creating a whole new account.
- since my history is rather short (i've contributed anonymously before, but created this name just a few hours ago, in order to have some "credibilitY" in the discussion regarding the deletion of a page), i wouldn't lose much.
Let me reassure you that my writing here means I don't think your username is grossly, blatantly, or obviously inappropriate; such names get reported straight to Wikipedia:Administrator_intervention_against_vandalism (WP:AIV), or blocked on sight. This is more a case where opinions might differ, and it would be good to reach some consensus -- either here or at WP:RFC/NAME. So I look forward to a friendly discussion, and to enjoying your continued participation on Wikipedia. Thank you again! -- Longhair\talk 09:49, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
- Fair enough, i hope my reasoning is sound. I don't want to impersonate anyone, but i have used this particular name for upwards of nine years, and my real name was taken (and since i am not american, i don't have a middle initial or other easy way of varying that one).
- You appear to be editing constructively, and your username isn't offensive as such, just confusing. I'll let it slide for now and suggest you keep this conversation visible on your talk page so that others may be able to followup where we left off. -- Longhair\talk 10:06, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
- Greetings, I just had to say it mate... cool name ;-) Fosnez 06:54, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

Names should not be offensive, disruptive, promotional, misleading, or related to a "real-world" group or organization. Also, usernames may not end in the word "bot" unless the account is an approved bot account.
Please choose a new account name that meets our policy guidelines. However, do not create a new account if you wish to credit your existing contributions to a new name through a username change. To request a username change:
- Add
{{unblock-un|your new username here}}
on your user talk page. You should be able to edit this talk page even though you are blocked. If not, you may wish to contact the blocking administrator by clicking on "E-mail this user" on their talk page. - At an administrator's discretion, you may be unblocked for 24 hours to file a request.
- Please note that you may only request a name that is not already in use, so please check here for a list of names that have already been taken. For more information, please see Wikipedia:Changing username.
- Add
{{unblock|Your reason here}}
below, but you should read our guide to appealing blocks first. Cirt (talk) 03:08, 9 October 2009 (UTC)
