Blocked as a sockpuppet

[edit]
Wikipedia's technical logs indicate that this user account has been or may be used abusively as a sockpuppet of User:MiltenR per the evidence presented at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/MiltenR. It has been blocked indefinitely from editing to prevent abuse.

Note that multiple accounts are allowed, but not for illegitimate reasons, and any contributions made while evading blocks or bans may be reverted or deleted.
If you think there are good reasons why you should be unblocked, you should review the guide to appealing blocks, and then appeal your block by adding the following text below this notice: {{unblock|Your reason here ~~~~}}. Note that anything you post in your unblock request will be public, so you may alternatively use the Unblock Ticket Request System to submit an appeal if it contains information that must be private.

Request reason:

I am writing to appeal for the reinstatement of my Wikipedia account, which was recently blocked due to what I believe is a misunderstanding.
I'm a researcher associated with the Institute of Balkan Studies and Centre of Thracology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Our team collaborates with the Romanian Biblioteca Județeană I. G. Bibicescu which specializes in Dacology, a complementary field to Thracology focused on the Getae tribal confederation. You can see our past projects on our website here: Institute of Balkan Studies - Projects.
We deliver lectures at schools and universities focused on the ancient inhabitants of the Balkans, a topic that has recently gained more prominence in the history curricula. We encourage the students to utilize Wikipedia for their projects, though we often find that the information available on this extensive subject online is scarce and underrepresented.
Unfortunately, beyond Romania and Bulgaria, the global academic community has a very limited understanding of the ancient populations in Southeast Europe, with the Hellenes being a notable exception. This encouraged us to start our own initiative to enrich Wikipedia’s coverage of Thracology and its related fields, strictly adhering to our areas of expertise.
Initially, we enlisted a student from St. Kliment Ohridski University majoring in history (WindWalkerOfficial) to assist in this project with their computer skills. However, due to the overwhelming scope of the task and the unexpected ban of the student’s account, this collaboration did not yield significant contributions and it ended quickly.
Because it’s against Wikipedia’s policy for one person to have multiple accounts and for many people to use the same account, we let the student go and decided that, as my colleagues are not well-versed in computer usage, I would be the one to handle the editing.
I was unavailable and engaged with other work at the time, so we got back to it after four months, which is when I created my Wikipedia account - Tegyrios, formerly TereusOfThrace.
In our team of 3 scholars specialized in different fields of Thracology, each of us focuses on gathering sourced material in Google Docs on one of several subjects based on our expertise - Localization and Identification of Tribes, Thracian Archeological Sites and Thracian Religious Practices. I'm the one putting everything together, translating it from Romanian or Bulgarian and integrating it into the dedicated Wikipedia articles after first laying it out in sandbox.
Concerning the large byte size of the interactive map I added on the main Thracians page, I’ve just been having trouble figuring out how to store the .geojson map data on Wikimedia Commons and link it to the article from there instead.
After a month of editing, I was unexpectedly blocked, with the reasoning suggesting that my account had been flagged as a sockpuppet of the student’s account, WindWalkerOfficial. This was quite shocking to me, as I had been making every effort to follow Wikipedia’s guidelines after the student left the project.
After reviewing the circumstances, I suspect that the issue might stem from the fact that my colleagues and I often work from the same network, based at our institute’s office. Since we share a single computer network with a shared database for research purposes, it’s possible that our IP addresses and that of the student who worked here with us were mistakenly flagged as being part of a coordinated malicious attack.
I fully understand the importance of Wikipedia’s rules regarding multiple accounts, and I can assure you that this was never my intention.
I’m sure that if my colleagues had also registered as editors on Wikipedia we would’ve encountered this problem a lot sooner, but as I was the only one handling the edits, it seems the system falsely identified my account as being linked to the student’s previous activity.
I realize that this may have appeared suspicious, but I want to emphasize that I have always acted in good faith to improve Wikipedia’s content in my area of expertise. I take full responsibility for any confusion caused and am willing to clarify any details to resolve this misunderstanding.
Regarding my pseudonym, I chose the names of mythological Thracian kings, Tereus and Tegyrios, while WindWalkerOfficial was the username of the student who used to work with us. I do not have any association with the account MiltenR, our initiative only began on April 19, 2024.
I sincerely hope we can navigate this misunderstanding and I can continue making contributions to improve Wikipedia.
Thank you for considering my appeal.Tegyrios (talk) 18:08, 4 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Tegyrios (talk) 18:08, 4 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Comment, MiltenR was an experienced editor who was quite unique in wikipedia in that he exhibited what one could describe as "Thracian nationalism" and "Thraco-Bulgarian nationalism". He was immediately recognizable because, apart from the general edits in Thracian-related articles (3 main socks overlap), he had some very specific stances, for which he was well-known in wikipedia: providing 'recent studies' 1) to refuse the Turkic origin of the Proto-Bulgars (diff), 2) To establish the Thracians as the predominant ancestors of Bulgarians, instead of the South Slavs (diff, diff). Interestingly, these are also the main interests of the socks that came after him, firstly WindWalkerOfficial with the identical talkpage discussion "Bulgars are not ethnically Turkic", and "New evidence", "Aftermath and Legacy" etc. The users share much more in common than just a general interest in Balkan peoples; all accounts share the same "Thraco-Bulgarian" POV. For example, the Legacy section created by WindWalker directly mirrors MiltenR's edits. Their activity had been criticized several times as it is obvious in their talkpages MiltenR, WindWalkerOfficial. That specific pov has also been called out before (diff).

I am not sure how much of Tegyrios' claims above are true, although I wouldn't be surprised if there were indeed several people working behind the account. Now Tegyrios himself claimed to be new in wikipedia, although their sandbox, full of major projects, does not support that. Tegyrios claimed that WindWalkerOfficial, the 'enlisted student who came to assist', was banned 'unexpectedly'. Nevertheless, the ban was anything but unexpected, as it was the result of an SPI which connected them to MiltenR and additionally caught them socking with the account Mitko28, who created another identical talkpage discussion "Recent Genetic Studies of Bulgars Reveal That They are not ethnically Turkic". Tegyrios did not address this sock. Even if this sock was another 'colleague', then this is an obvious case of WP:MEATPUPPETRY which intended to promote this minority viewpoint in wikipedia, just like the other two had been trying to do. Also, If WindWalker, indeed, edited under the instructions of Tegyrios, then it is also obvious that he was being used a means in order to push fringe or minority vewpoints in wikipedia. And despite all that, this collaboration was never actually made public before, not even during Tegyrios' own SPI. Finally, these two IPs 130.204.61.225 (October 2023-August 2024) 95.111.70.147 (January-June 2024) editing the same articles and talkpages are almost certainly block evasions of MiltenR/WindWalker. Piccco (talk) 17:15, 5 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

1. I've been proficient with Markdown and HTML for a long time, that's why I'm the one undertaking this ambitious task in the first place. Is there a policy against consistent sandbox use that I'm just not aware of?
2. I have not instructed WindWalkerOfficial to make any changes to the Bulgars article. However I find it confusing how the changes made are classified as POV. On the Wikipedia article Bulgarians it clearly lays out the multifaceted ethnogenesis of the Bulgarians. It's not exclusively Turkic, Thracian or Slavic, it's all of them combined.
"Modern-day Bulgarians descend from peoples of vastly different origins and numbers, and are thus the result of a "melting pot" effect. The main ethnic elements which blended to produce the modern Bulgarian ethnicity are:
Thracians – a native ancient Balkan Indo-European people who left a cultural and genetic legacy. Approximately 55% of Bulgarian autosomal genetic legacy is of Paleo-Balkan and Mediterranean origin and can be attributed to Thracian and other indigenous Balkan populations predating Slavs and Bulgars;
Early Slavs – an Indo-European group of tribes that migrated from Eastern Europe into the Balkans in the 6th–7th century CE and imposed their language and culture on the local Thracian, Roman and Greek communities. Approximately 40% of Bulgarian autosomal make-up comes from a northeastern European population that admixed with the native population in the period between 400 and 1000 CE;
Bulgars – a semi-nomadic tribal federation, possibly from Central Asia, which settled in the northeast of the Balkans in the 7th century CE, federated with the local Slavic and Slavicized population, organised early-medieval Bulgarian statehood and bequeathed their ethnonym to the modern Bulgarian ethnicity, while eventually assimilating into the Slavic population. Approximately 2.3% of Bulgarian genes originate in Central Asia, corresponding to Asian tribes such as the Bulgars, with admixture peaking in the 9th century CE;"
None of the accounts suspected of sockpuppetry are involved with this article. I don't see how sourced genetic research is considered subjective and fringe. Turkic genetic legacy should not to be denied and Thracian legacy should not to be suppressed.
3. I should have made the collaboration between me and WindwalkerOffical public, I'm at fault here.
3. Mitko28 is likely an account belonging to the student, that was his personal name.
4. I can confidently assert that neither the student nor I have any affiliation with MiltenR. If you require additional technical information to confirm this I'm ready to give it. Tegyrios (talk) 18:18, 5 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I never said that there is anything necessarily wrong with having a certain POV in wikipedia, nor did I actually deny the genetic makeup of Bulgarians. It was clearly stated that User:WindWalkerOfficial, who was caught making several pov edits and was a sockmaster of two accounts, was 'enlisted' in order to edit wikipedia for other people. Technically, the account appeared to be connected to four more accounts, Mitko28, ErionTracology, Tegyrios, Terran28, (1) with a possible meatpuppet Euiauaua, as it was suspected at the relevant SPI (2). Regardless of what the exact connections between real life people behind these accounts are, if they were in fact run by different people, this activity is a clear case of, if not WP:SOCKPUPPETRY, then definitelly WP:MEATPUPPETRY. I do not think it is really necessary to further explain why the edits in the Bulgars article, among others, were POV pushing, as this has been discussed numerous times by other editors in the talkpage of that and other similar articles. I'm sure that there are many discussions at the talkpage archive. Piccco (talk) 19:34, 5 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Tegyrios, I'm not a checkuser and can't look at this technical data, but your description of why these accounts are all technically related seems plausible to me. I'm glad you've learned that disclosing connections between accounts is important. Please keep in mind, if you're unblocked, that it isn't meatpuppetry to have multiple people interested in the same thing all editing about that same thing, but if you participate in the same discussions with the same pov, that does put you in danger of being blocked. Just to be clear, this account needs to remain yours alone (don't allow other colleagues to edit with it).
It doesn't look like you were ever blocked for having a particular pov, but rather for sockpuppetry, so if a checkuser is willing to give you the benefit of the doubt, I don't really see any reason not to unblock. However, if you do return to editing, you will need to be careful to work on getting consensus for your edits. Since it's clear that other editors have found these genetic theories to be fringe views (see WP:FRINGE) in the past, I strongly suggest that you avoid adding this kind of information to articles without first discussing it on the talk page. -- asilvering (talk) 21:22, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The five accounts (including Tegyrios) that I indicated above are already confirmed to be connected in the relevant SPI's. Regardless, as it is evident at the SPI archive, many editors that have been active in Balkan-related history for, at least, the past year or so could immediately recognize suspicious behaviour, ever since MiltenR got blocked in December 2023, unlike editors that have not been active in this topic-area. Besides the striking "Thraco-Bulgarian" POV, which was not shared by another editor here, the articles that traditionally attracted MiltenR's interests have been having low activity throughout the year, except for the times when a new editor would appear, immediately targetting these articles, additionally showcasing the same POV in edits and talkpages, as I already pointed out above and at the SPI. Most strikingly, the article of Thracians has had nearly no activity ever since Tegyrios' numerous major edits a couple of months ago. The same pattern appears with WindWalker's edits. It is telling that, along with MiltenR, both became top 10 all-time contributors to this article just within a month or so of activity (stats), with the majority of users in the list being long retired/inactive, and just a couple of them are active in Balkan-related articles and I happen to know them.
