Tawkerbot2 clones vs. Mathbot
[edit]The TB2 clones seem to have been reverting Mathbot quite a lot; check the history of User talk:Mathbot. Is it possible for User:Mathbot to be whitelisted across all TB2-style bots? --ais523 12:48, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
- The other bots shouldn't be running now... which bot is doing it... -- Tawker 13:23, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
- Mostly it's User:AntiVandalBot, but User:Tawkerbot2 has been involved as well. They're not reverting every change of Mathbot, just a few. --ais523 16:59, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

Nathan Rosenberg deletion
[edit]Can you clarify the situation regarding the summary disappearance of the Nathan Rosenberg article?
The deletion log [[1]] indicates that you deleted it at 20:23 last night, but your contribs list shows no corresponding entry.
There also appears to have been no due process leading to this deletion? DaveApter 09:47, 28 October 2006 (UTC)
- Speedy delete A7 - notability not established... someone on IRC asked me if I thought it was notable and looking at the article... well, I think you have my answer. We often delete stuff w/o editing the page, it saves on disk space just a tad - any deleted edits are gone from contribs lists anyways - now for me to find some caffeine -- Tawker 14:10, 28 October 2006 (UTC)
- I don't really disagree with you. I was just puzzled to notice that the link had gone red suddenly. While you are about it, what do you think of these? -- Harry Rosenberg, Joan Rosenberg, Art Schreiber, Steven Zaffron, Nancy Zapolski, Brian Regnier, Laurel Scheaf, Jerry Joiner ?

AOL reverter vandal
[edit]For the past couple days, I've been dealing with a rather annoying gent from AOL (there's a couple wide-spaced IP ranges, but sadly they're all cache proxies) who goes around reverting User:Hu12's contributions with the edit summary "REVERT HU12 SPAM IT WILL NOT STOP UNTILL YOU DO". Now, I don't know the capabilities of the various bots, so I can't tell if AVB or TB2 can watch for this sort of thing, of it possibly I should ask VoA to deal with it with his, but I'd really appreciate it if you got back with me. How AntiVandalBot recognizes vandalism
[edit]Hello. I've been using Wikipedia for some time now and I've noticed a lot of difference bots in my time but I was wondering how AVB can tell the difference between regular edits and blatant vandalism. I have no idea how bots function and have no intention of creating a bot in the future, but I'm just curious how he can tell the difference betwen the two. Thanks.
P.S. - Please reply here and congradulations on all of the awards, your adminship, and all of your hard work here at Wikipedia. Keep it up! // Sasuke-kun27 02:10, 30 October 2006 (UTC)
- I did not program the bots, but have been watching and interacting with them for quite a while. I was also given a summary of the then-list of criteria quite a few months back. Basically the bot(s) watch all edits, and parse every one through a set of checks. If the bot matches any of the current criteria, and does not meet any of a number of white-listing criteria, then it is considered a vandalism, and is handled as such. Amoung the white-listing is a list of all admins. The bots are not supposed to revert admins in general. As for the vandalism criteria, I'd rather not say. In general we do not want the information publically out there. But I will give one common example. Page blanking. Blank out a page, and the bot is very likely to flag the edit as vandalism. In general, watch the things that the bot reverts. Each revert triggered at least one vandalism criteria. So look at a revert, at what was done and what was reverted, and think about what it is about that specific edit that the bot could have triggered on. - TexasAndroid 14:17, 30 October 2006 (UTC)
- Pretty much, it's now a bot, we moved it to the toolserver and it speeds up things a fair bit. Right now it checks (or is supposed to) all IP edits, all "new" account edits and thats about it. Pretty much it's blatantly obvious things (etc) that get the vandalism, there are a few other things which I don't really want to tip off the vandals in a public channel. Feel free to email me though :) -- Tawker 18:25, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

Are you a bot - response
[edit]How are you able to test AVB? I thought that it finds vandalism in a semi-random manner since it can't check every single article at once. Anyway the only reason I caught it fast was because I was repeatedly checking my watchlist back then. Gdo01 19:28, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

Responding
[edit]Hi Tawker. Here are the templates I use for the warnings:
==Editing Concerns==
#{{subst:test1}} ~~~~
#{{subst:test2}} ~~~~
#{{subst:test3}} ~~~~
#{{subst:test4}} ~~~~
Each has text and symbols, based on common use for many RC patrollers. Thanks for considering my suggestion. Kukini 02:39, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
The thing is we don't want to give the standard warnings - they sound way too much like a human is doing it - I'm well aware of test1-4, and of course the much more useful test5 :) - I think I'll work on another custom warning -- Tawker 04:29, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit]Well, I did unblock myself, which I guess is ok in this situation. It is pretty funny, and I'm glad that I'm not the only one who does that either. Strange things can happen while trying to keep up with all the vandalism. Am I the only one who feels like there is more vandalism than usual today? Vandal Bot Code
[edit]Hi Tawker, I help administer a wiki and am interested in this AntiVandalBot. Is it possible to make a Vandal Bot that doesnt rely us on installing it on Unix? For example, it would be nice it works as a MediaWiki extension. Any pointers on that? Thank. --ApplePie3 01:11, 6 November 2006 (UTC)
Re: Template:Wr
[edit]With all due respect I think I'll have to dispute your speedy of this one. Removing warnings is considered vandalism per VAND and it is a well known and accepted practice to block / protect user talk pages of users who constantly remove it. I must ask that you restore it..... -- Tawker 05:13, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
- Eagle has undeleted them. As I said to him, I'm not going to delete them again, I'll just let my reasoning stand for itself and someone else can act if they like. I will have to disagree with you about these templates. I'm sure that blocking and protection can be used in many cases where a user is removing warnings, for example if a vandal is blanking warnings to confuse future RC patrollers (I'd block them myself in that case). But the problem with the templates is that they imply a universal approach, and policy status, when that is simply not the case. I've expressed these reasons here and here. How would you respond to those arguments? --bainer (talk) 06:11, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
- Also, please note that you are incorrect about the contents of WP:VAND. While the concept that user talk pages should be used as a 'rap sheet' / 'wall of shame' for past warnings has been inserted into that policy multiple times it has been removed just as many because there was never a consensus in support of such a change. What you describe as a "well known and accepted practice" is, in fact, strongly opposed as blockable harassment by a large number of admins... as can be seen in the current AN discussions noted above. --CBD 12:03, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

Rollback
[edit]I had this idea recently: what if the rollback privilege was assigned to the antivandalism bots? Would that help TawkerBot2 & Co.? I believe it's not impossible to get the community consensus for this, since the objections raised in WP:RFR do not apply to bots. Of course, there is no point in proposing it if there is no gain for the bots. Tizio, Caio, Sempronio 18:42, 6 November 2006 (UTC)

AntiVandalBot
[edit]Hello Tawker. I was reading the 'Bot's user page when I came across this:
"...It is a set of check statements that if enough match true, it reverts. The patterns will be emailed upon request to users who can be trusted..."
I was wondering if I could get the pattern e-mailed to me. I can assure you that I am not a vandal. In fact, I spend most of my wiki-time reverting vandalism, and my Userpage was even targeted several times. I'm really curious about bots and yours seems to be the most active on the pages that I watch. My e-mail can be reached by clicking the "E-mail this user" link from my Userpage. [edit]On the subject of the logo for WPWP (or 'wip-wip' as I call it), how big/what aspect ratio are the iTunes icons? I've (yes, bludgeon me to an undignified death now) never used iTunes, so I'm not exactly sure how it handles that. Give me an aspect ratio or size, and I'll have a go at something. If you give me a size, I'll probably work at about 1.5/2x of that then scale down, so a bigger version would be available. Approval of Fair-Use Bot
[edit]Hi Tawker,
I noticed you approved Fair-Use Bot for a trial run. But Werdna hasn't even tried to discuss the two issues I mentioned.
What is the point of having a discussion if your points are just going to be ignored and the bot approved anyway?
Please respond to my talk page.

- Hi Tawker,
- OrphanBot was actually why I started to review the bots. I saw a lot of anomosity towards it (see here and here). I really think we can make friendly bots that review copyrights, but I think we need to put an emphasis on the friendly part. Thanks for the kind reply though — it was much appreciated.

[edit]Hello, why did you speedy delete 'Lazaris?' What I mean is, why did it have to be speedy, as opposed to specifying any concerns on the page and at least giving people a chance to rectify them. [edit]I'm not sure if you think the GM Place article is too cluttered with pics already, but I just dug up a panorama I took at the Ducks-Canucks pre-season game earlier this year. It's at Commons now; I personally don't think it's worthy of Wikipedia, but since you seem to live at that GM Place article, I'm going to leave it up to you. :)

AVB for other languages?
[edit]Hi. I was wondering if it's possible (and easy?) to have AVB monitor other wikipedias - the one I'm specifically interested in is the Hebrew WP. It would be great if we could have it revert even basic stuff, like page blanking, and even better if we could define a blacklist for Hebrew words that are no-no, and have it act upon those. What are the capabilities/policies on this? tnx, Odedee 07:20, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

- "Flexing his administrative muscles, Tawker erased the changes and blocked "Stephencolbert" from editing privileges indefinitely. A rash of vandalism to the "Elephants," "George Washington" and Colbert's own Wikipedia pages after the show aired on the east coast prompted Tawker to lock those pages so that unauthorized users could no longer edit them. Tawker had saved the truth, for one more day at least."
- "And for a brief moment, it made him famous. The blogosphere was abuzz with Tawker's victory. CBS and CNet News each wrote about Tawker on their media blogs. Tawker's own blog received over 25,000 visits after he posted a note about the "Wikiality" incident. Tawker was the man of the moment thanks to what was fast becoming the word of an era: truthiness."
- I saw that clip of him editing the Elephant article on YouTube. Did you really block him? And congradulations on becoming so famous! // Sasuke-kun27 23:39, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
Your userpage toobox
[edit]I stole some of the html for your toolbox with the warning shortcuts to use on mine. Hope you don't mind the plagiarism, but I gave you credit. Flibbert 17:17, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
How did you make yiur wiki page like this?
[edit]HOw did u do this? i didn't know it was possible to have such decorations... and you are a WIki FREAK!!! no offence —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Davud363000 (talk • contribs) .
- If I could have a quick say here, it's not really that hard to do once you get the hang of the site. I mean, take a look at my user page and my talk page. I've figured out how to change the color and the background of the titles of pages (it took me a while to figure out what color scheme I wanted for my user page, though). With time, I'm sure you'd be able to do these things and more! You just have to keep working on it! // Sasuke-kun27 23:10, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
- Fact No 101 about Tawker's userpage, he didn't make it :o - you actually don't have to cite people's userpages when you grab code, but I don't mind the link at all :) -- Tawker 00:04, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
My editor review
[edit]Okay, I know that you don't really know much about me or my edits here on Wikipedia, but do you think that you could take a look at my editor review? I recently archived it but I've decided to leave the notice on my user page just in case anyone else would like to add additional comments. It's alright with me if you don't want to (I've learned to take rejection rather well) or if you don't have the time, but it would be greatly appreciated if you could. Like I said though, if you don't want to, that's fine with me. Thank you for your time. // Sasuke-kun27 23:39, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
- Thank you for the review! I am very well aware that being an adminstrator is not all fun and games - it comes with a lot of responsibilities and expectations that a regular user doesn't have. People may think that it's easy, but it's probably a lot harder than it looks (I obviously wouldn't know from experience). I see adminship as a privelige and not just a reward for hard work. Well, thank you again for the review. It really means a lot. // Sasuke-kun27 00:36, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
