Articles That Could Fall Under the WP:GLAM/SI Project

  • Kevin Gover, the 2nd Director of NMAI
  • Qero - currently there is a very thin article on Kero that this can be added to
  • Parfleche - another thin article that could use more info and media from GLAM/SI
  • Ernest Spybuck - already listed as a needed article in WP:GLAM/SI
  • Cultural Resources Center (CRC), the research, collections facility of NMAI
  • Museum Support Center (MSC), the research, collections facility of NMNH seum Support Center (note: a MSC page currently exists, but only redirects to the Smithsonian Libraries page)

Articles That Don't Fall Under WP:GLAM/SI

These look like some good ideas, I would suggest starting with Ernest Spybuck, Kero/Qero and Parfleche, that way other editors see that you aren't doing articles that may be interpreted as Conflict of Interest editing, and so that you can understand more of how articles come together on Wikipedia. In the future, we would definitely like your advice and support on the others.
Are Kero and Qero essentially the same thing? If they are, we can direct links to both to the same place. Sadads (talk) 19:53, 21 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, they are the same thing. You see variations on spelling of Inka words. Our collections catalog uses both--Qero/Kero. I think the museum is preferring the Qero spelling, for the benefit of Scrabble players the world over. ;-)
Okay, I redirected it, see what the code looks like at http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Qero&redirect=no, this is how we solve alternate name problems and common misspelled/mislabeled searches . For example you kind find out what redirects to Smithsonian Institution here. For more information on that kind of stuff see WP:Redirect. New Ernest Starbuck draft

Hey, you draft is starting to look good. If you are interested in moving it into the mainspace so that other people can start giving you feedback and support, here are the instructions: Open the page, go to the little downward facing arrow next to the search bar and put you mouse over it, click on move, fill in the various text boxes, and click "Move page"! Now that it is up, I would suggest nominating it for a DYK at the DYK Nomination page. DYKs or Did You Knows are great opportunities to get articles on the main page, so that we can increase traffic and awareness of the topic. It's good practice to nominate any article which you create with significant references and gives you a chance to get some feedback from the community (and congratulations on your work!). I also asked some of our Biography writing GLAM/SI members to take a look at the article and polish it! Sadads (talk) 19:22, 30 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Also, the best way to get consistent traffic to an article is to have internal links on other Wikipedia pages, if you want this article to impact a wide audience you will probably want to create more of these links. Hello, Taoboy, just letting you know I've offered some rough feedback on the page. It's looking very good for an early article! One thing I added to the talk page was a WikiProject banner, which tags the article as under the scope of the project used, and makes it easier to track article quality and categories. You should try and add a relevant banner to every article you make in the future, as it helps other interested editors find your page and assist. excellent work. the good use of references will make it stay. i added the external link to the NMAI collection, since it adds a lot of info, and the link to Oklahoma State University. i find a google search is useful for finding the odd online reference -- a little housekeeping -- added {{DEFAULTSORT:Spybuck, Ernest}}, and some categories, (at the bottom) which puts him on the lists. (more info Help:Category) i don't know if you have HotCat turned on in your user preferences. Accotink2 talk 20:27, 30 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

on the 1921 monograph. i believe that it's government produced publications are public domain, (not owned, for example library of congress) however, it's life of artist + 70 years, or books published before January 1, 1923. see Wikipedia:Public domain; the upload into Wikimedia Commons is a separate process that i could help you with, there are some wizards there as well. Thanks for the tip Accotink2. I think I should use the Government form of the Commons upload, right? I have a nice image of Spybuck and 23MB Tiffs of two paintings. I asked that they leave the color bars on so that I could check the color balance and fix if necessary, so I would need to crop those out for the article. Let me know if you have any advice on how to approach that.
Good find on Harrington's monograph. I have a hard copy on my desk, and the color plates are very rich. The Spybuck plates in the digital copy don't give a very rich impression of Spybuck's talent, which is why I wanted to upload at least a couple decent hi-rez images that showcase that. We are conscious of sensitive materials these days, so I avoided using paintings of ceremonies for the article, but I don't think it would hurt to link to the Harrington's monograph on LOC. I have a list of publications Spybuck's art appeared in that I will add to a section of the article.Taoboy49 (talk) 03:07, 1 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
On the images, go ahead and crop them and clean them up, and if the images were processed using Federal funding and the Smithsonian has not problems with the image being released, you can upload them under the United States Goverment Public Domain licensing. If the images are out of copyright, then you can also upload them under regular Public Domain because their If you want the work primarily used on the English Wikipedia for right now go ahead and use the link in the toolbox menu on the left which says upload file and follow the directions (eventually it will probably be transferred to the Commons). If you want to upload it to the Wikimedia Commons, you can go to http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Upload and do the same thing. Sadads (talk) 03:21, 1 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I managed to get the Spybuck image uploaded (ErnestSpybuck1910.JPG), but when I add it to the artist infobox, I get some extra text around the image. Not sure what is going on. Maybe someone could help. I'm now working on the two painting images.Taoboy49 (talk) 15:18, 1 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
good job uploading (it's kinda klunky) i went and made a gallery (in the hopes that there will be more) or we could put them in the sections of text, like the other artist examples (that's when you use that code that you didn't need for the infobox). The article is looking really good, and just got approved for a DYK, so should see itself on the main page in the next week. Hopefully it will be scheduled in a high traffic time and we will get a few people to improve the article. When you feel the article is pretty much complete, we will probably want to put it up for peer review at Wikipedia:Peer review or review for GA status at Wikipedia:Good article nominations (which, if done right, will do a very similar thing), but don't feel like you are rushed, there is no timeline for these.Sadads (talk) 13:24, 3 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Smithsonian Institution Archives Edit-a-Thon and Meetup!

She Blinded Me with Science: Smithsonian Women in Science Edit-a-Thon will be held on Friday, March 30, 2012 at the Smithsonian Archives in Washington, D.C. This edit-a-thon will focus on improving and writing Wikipedia content about women from the Smithsonian who contributed to the sciences. It will be followed by a happy hour meetup!
