Journal of Life Care Planning

The Journal of Life Care Planning is a peer-reviewed journal published quarterly by the International Association of Rehabilitation Professionals. The publisher is Elliott & Fitzpatrick in Athens, Georgia. The journal is commonly referred to as JLCP. Currently, the readership of JLCP is estimated at 1,500. The journal was established in 2002 by The International Academy of Life Care Planners (IALCP), which became section of the International Association of Rehabilitation Professionals (IARP). The Journal of Life Care Planning publishes rehabilitation-related original research, case studies, and practice guidelines for life care planning professionals. The journal was established in 2002 with Patricia McCollom as the founding editor, with Dr. Roger Weed of Georgia State University as the associate editor. The journal’s current editor is Tanya Rutherford-Owen, who succeeded Dianne Simmons-Grab in 2016.

According to the agreed-upon definition, “The life care plan is a dynamic document based upon published standards of practice, comprehensive assessment, data analysis, and research, which provides an organized, concise plan for current and future needs with associated costs for individuals who have experienced catastrophic injury or have chronic health care needs.” (International Conference on Life Care Planning and the International Academy of Life Care Planners. Adopted 1998, April.) It is a way to plan for the lifetime needs of an individual with a disability. Life care plans are used in workers’ compensation claims, civil litigation, mediation, reserve setting for insurance companies, federal vaccine injury fund cases, discharge planning, Medicare set-asides, elder care, and other arenas. This journal is provided to IARP members as a member benefit and to non-member subscribers, who can subscribe annually. The International Association of Rehabilitation Professionals was formerly known as the National Association of Rehabilitation Professionals in the Private Sector (NARPPS). NARPP was established in 1980 and remained the premier professional organization for rehabilitation professionals in the private sector until 2000 when NARPPS transitioned into IARP. The International Association of Rehabilitation Professionals (IARP) is a professional membership group for individuals in the field of rehabilitation, with a current membership of approximately 1900 professionals from various, rehabilitation-related disciplines. The organization has four specialty practice sections- Rehabilitation and Disability Case Management, Forensic Rehabilitation, Social Security Vocational Expert and Life Care Planning. The life care planning section, The International Academy of Life Care Planning (IALCP) became a professional section of IARP in 2006 after existing from 1996 until 2006 as a privately owned professional membership association. The IALCP section offers the only life care planning Fellow designation (FIALCP). The Fellow program was established in 1996 and currently has been awarded to approximately 16 individuals who have completed the necessary steps to complete the life care planning fellowship program. The specialty practice of life care planning consists of rehabilitation healthcare professionals including nurses, physicians, rehabilitation counselors, psychologists, occupational therapists, speech therapists and physical therapists. Certifications including the Certified Life Care Planner (CLCP) and the Canadian Certified Life Care Planner (CCLCP) are administered through the International Commission on Healthcare Certification (ICHCC). Currently, approximately 869 individuals hold these certifications internationally. There also exists a certifying body for the Certified Nurse Life Care Planner (CNLCP) credential. Life care planning textbooks include: Life Care Planning and Case Management Handbook (Weed & Berens, 2018) now in its fourth edition and Pediatric Life Care Planning and Case Management (Riddick-Grisham & Demming, 2011).

The Journal of Life Care Planning provides opportunities for continuing education through articles reviews as well as through the Ethics Interface column, contained in each issue of the Journal of Life Care Planning. Currently, CEUs are issued by IARP and are offered for the Certified Life Care Planner (CLCP) credential. The JLCP journal is abstracted and indexed in EBSCOHealth’s Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL). The JLCP journal often publishes projects completed through the Foundation for Life Care Planning research, a nonprofit research which was established in 2002.
