Replication Lag on English Wikipedia

Hi Tango! How come the replication lag on the English Wiki is about 20 days, while all other ones are about 10 seconds. (Please reply on you talk page. It will be on my watchlist) TeckWizTalkContribsGuestbook 22:59, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

The English Wikipedia was moved to a different database cluster several weeks ago, and became separated from the rest of the Wikimedia wikis. Because the English Wikipedia database could no longer be replicated properly, de:User:DaB. developed a tool to sync enwiki (and all the yaseo wikis, like ja:, ko:, etc.) Although this tool works perfectly for the Asian wikis, the English Wikipedia receives a lot of edits and the toolserver machine currently is not equipped enough to handle all the traffic without lagging all the other wikis. I hear that the problem will be fixed when some hardware on the toolserver is replaced. Cheers, Tangotango 11:22, 1 July 2006 (UTC)
I was just nosing around, and was going to drop you a message to say hi!!, but thanks for the info on the tool server :) Eagle talk 21:06, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

Highway Cello

Hi Tangotango, Highway Cello has withdrawn from being election staff & has voted in the elections. The bot is listing him as ineligible in the report. Can you please get the bot to accept him as an eligible voter? Thanks --Srikeit (Talk | Review me!) 02:23, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

People running can vote. I think it was a problem with his signature, which I think I fixed. -- 9cds(talk) 14:31, 3 July 2006 (UTC)
Oops, I misread that as withdraw from running... -- 9cds(talk) 14:39, 3 July 2006 (UTC)
With your bot doing more of these summary pages, would something like what I suggested here be useful for those of us with these pages on our watchlist? NoSeptember 14:36, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for reverting the vandalism to my userpage. -Will Beback 10:22, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

Barnstar!

Far your work in getting Tangobot to work in the Esperanza elections, making the staff's job easier, I hereby award you this Barnstar - great work! -- 9cds(talk) 14:37, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

The bot is saying that Tdxiang is ineligible, but he's on the list... hopefully you can fix this. Thanks :) — FireFox 10:34, 04 July '06

your RfA and questions

G'day Tangotango,

thanks for answering my questions on your RfA. I arrived far too late to add my voice, but clearly, it wasn't required. Congratulations on your adminship! Now, I'm sure you're just dying (ahem) to know about my reaction to your answers. Well, let's pretend you were.

I'm unclear on why you place so much emphasis on relisting. There are times when we relist AfDs, and sometimes it happens quite often — but none of the scenarios either of us mention require the closing admin to relist. I'm also a bit wary of your use of the phrase "numerical consensus", because there's no such thing. Raw numbers are irrelevant to xfD closure (I make a point of never even knowing what the final tally was, for example).

That said, you certainly appear to have given the issues I and others raised a lot of thought, and are not at all lacking in Clue. I would have supported. I think you'll make a good admin, and I look forward to working with you. fuddlemark (befuddle me!) 12:42, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

Rugby help

Thanks. I thought about doing that but wondered if I'd just make things worse! Anyway - hmmm - the portal should be Rugby football, is there any way it can be renamed without causing the dragons to stir out of their lair? The Portal link from the Rugby football page doesn't work - which is why I tried the move in the first place. SilkTork 15:58, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

Hey, sorry for the late reply. The only way a move could be arranged would be to move all the subpages of the Portal as well. However, before you do that, please make sure you have a consensus on the talk page of the Portal. You may also need to use Wikipedia:Requested moves so that more people get to know about the proposed move. If you need any further help, please feel free to ask. Cheers, Tangotango 08:07, 5 July 2006 (UTC)
I'm cool with the situation as is. The move created a redirect from Rugby football to Rugby so the Portal link now works. Your message, however, has reminded me to leave a note on the Portal talk page mentioning the situation. Cheers! SilkTork 08:11, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

wiki vandalism

I just got your message regarding WIKI VANDILISM and would like you know exactly what you are trying to imply. Please get back to ASAP -Arful Patel —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 216.154.16.168 (talkcontribs) 06:41, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

I was referring to your edits to Wikipedia:Welcome, newcomers - see Special:Contributions/216.154.16.168. I think you can agree that they constitute vandalism. P.S. If you are using a shared IP, someone using the same IP address as you could have made these edits. Cheers, Tangotango 06:44, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

I, EWS23, hereby award Tangotango the Tireless Contributor Barnstar for his dedicated contributions to helping clear out the orphaned images. Keep up the good work! 07:56, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

Hello! I just wanted to let you know that your work in the orphaned images category is much appreciated, and so it is my honor to award you this barnstar. Please continue to do the work that others are too lazy to do. :o) I'm sure I'll see you around, and keep in touch. EWS23 (Leave me a message!) 07:56, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

Of course, I'm more than happy to reward you. It is the "usually thankless tasks" that typically need thanking the most. I wish you all the best in your future edits and deletions. :o) EWS23 (Leave me a message!) 08:19, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

article was deleted

Please see: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/A Course in Miracles (book) Also see: A Course in Miracles Also see: Talk:A_Course_in_Miracles

This is left over from the deletion. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:A_Course_in_Miracles_%28book%29?redirect=no

There isn't anything there that would help create another article under that name, nor is there anything that isn't sufficiently covered in the AfD for the article.

helpme

Thanks for the pointers - I have been enjoying contributing to Wikipedia. I have recently started contributing more widely to some of the housekeeping tasks (vandalism patrol, recent changes, Afds, articles merges) and I'm having trouble keeping track of all of the resources that I need to do that (lists of tags and rules etc). The changes I wanted to make were I wanted to make to my userpage are to help me better organise these and work more efficiently (i.e categorised so that I don't have to keep scrolling down my user page to find things I half remember) and were thus intended to be more than just superficial prettifying. take care Mammal4 15:56, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

My RfA

Hi, I would like to express my gratitude for your participation at my recent RfA. The final vote was 68/21/3 and resulted in me becoming an admin!

For those of you who supported my RfA, I highly appreciate your kind words and your trust in me. For those who opposed - many of you expressed valid concerns regarding my activity here; I will make an effort in addressing them as time goes on while at the same time using my admin tools appropriately. So, salamat, gracias, merci, ありがとう, спасибо, धन्यवाद, 多謝, agyamanak unay, شكرًا, cảm ơn, 감사합니다, mahalo, ขอบคุณครับ, go raibh maith agat, dziękuję, ευχαριστώ, Danke, תודה, mulţumesc, გმადლობთ, etc.! If you need any help, feel free to contact me.

PS: I took the company car (pictured left) out for a spin, and well... it's not quite how I pictured it. --Chris S. 23:41, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

Monobook.js

I managed to get it working, I didn't realise that that moobook.js page needed to be refreshed (rather than the page which I wanted to see its effects on). It's not fully working but I'm blaming that on the code rather than me for the moment. Time to browse what's out there for simple reversion tools and see what I like. Feel free to make a suggestion, or not. BigNate37T·C 07:29, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

Regarding Your Message To Me

Hi There,

I'm fairly new member to the Wikipedia community, so I'm not really sure what I can remove from my talk page or what I cannot. So please I ask for your patience. I thought my talk page was like email... I read the (warning) messages, and them I deleted them after I read them. I didn't mean to cause inconvenience to anyone, and I didn't know it would alter other pages in Wikipedia.

On the other hand, it looks like some people are using my talk page for their sandbox! Namely member Myrtone86. I had some nonsense messages in my Talk today, and I'm not exactly sure what the context of them was, or what they were trying to say. So I deleted that too. I hope that does not continue to mess things up, but I didn't appreciate them.

Thanks for your warning, I didn't mean anything sinister by removing it-- so I hope you understand.

Take-Care, 3rdman --3rdman 16:21, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

I removed your speedy from this page and substituted a prod. Unfortunately (from my point of view) advertisement is not a speedy criteria per Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion Dipics 16:42, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

While I agree with you about the fact that Spam SHOULD be a valid criteria for a speedy, it just isn't. The following per WP:SPEEDY "Advertisements or spam: These may be subject to deletion, but not speedy deletion. There is often a chance to replace them with an NPOV version instead." Darn it. Dipics 12:07, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

Thanks

So, I got over problem #1, not knowing I needed to reset stuff in the config file. Once I figured that out, I ran a test run, and it did beautifully with everything but the notifications (which is what we had no problem with the other day!). Award

For your dedicated service to the Mediation Committee in programming and bringing MediationBot online, you are hereby awarded this barnstar on behalf of the Mediation Committee. We look forward to working with you to implement Phase Three of the MediationBot project. Great work!

Let me just second Essjay's praise. I've been seeing all the work you've been doing on the bot, most ot the pages you've used to test the bot are on my watchlist. It will certainly make life a lot eaier for the whole committee, and you'll probably have Tony Sidaway on your back soon wanting a bot for the ArbCom! --Wisden17 23:59, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
I concur with my two fellows in thanking you very much for the bot and your work on it. This bot will be of great help in case management, especially for Essjay, our overworked chair. Once again, thanks and keep up the great work. -^demon[yell at me] 01:23, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

Helpme tag

Hi, my question isn't really a "new wikipedian question", but I have a problem which encompasses a question on policy. As you'll see here, [1], Hunter91 (talk · contribs) feels that I'm incorrect in some of my advice to him and my actions in an AfD. He's removed votes from an AfD, claiming that they were by sockpuppets and he left no comment on the AfD discussion [2]. He also changed my nomination, leaving no comment. The users he has labelled as sockpuppets have no warnings for sockpuppetry on their talk pages. From what I can see, the user has a history of removing comments which conflict with his beliefs on the article talk page Talk:Battle_Field_2 like here. I feel that this user is distrupting wikipedia (to an extent), and am trying to get in contact with an admin, like yourself, via the helpme template to see if you can/will do anything about it. The response I'm hoping for is a kind word to Hunter91 and a revert of his edits to the afd page (Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Battle_Field_2). Thanks Martinp23 19:35, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

Thanks anyway :) Martinp23 20:19, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

Teutonic thrash on deletion review

An editor has asked for a deletion review of Teutonic thrash. Since you closed the deletion discussion for (or speedy-deleted) this article, your reasons on how or why you did so will be greatly appreciated in the above review.

Thank you for contributing the impressive the pile of supports gathered on my RfA, which passed with a final tally of 0x0104/0x01/0x00. I'm happy that so many people have put faith in my abilities as an admin and promise to use the tools wisely and do my best not to let you down. If I ever may be of assistance, just leave a note on my talk page.

Request

For a project I'm working on (hopefully for presentation at Wikimania, which means time is short), I could really do with the following data, for each RfA since January (whether successful, failed, withdrawn, aborted, or whatever):

  • candidate
  • nominator
  • each voter and the vote cast thereby
  • outcome
  • closing bureaucrat

I come to you for this because you seem to have some expertise in parsing RfA pages. Any assistance you can provide in this manner would be graciously appreciated. Kelly Martin (talk) 16:18, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

I'd prefer a format that is human-discernable but also machine-parseable (that is, I'd like to be able to look at it and divine meaning, while at the same time be able to run a script against it to transform the data). (Also acceptable would be a mysql database dump; one table containing the details for each RfA, and the other with the candidate/voter pairs.) Kelly Martin (talk) 11:29, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
Hopefully two tables since the vote/candidacy relationship is many-to-one. :) As soon as possible is best; Wikimania is less than two weeks away. Kelly Martin (talk) 16:18, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

Hello, Tangotango, and congratulations on your adminship!

It's been some time since we created Requests for feedback. You'd be pleased to know that traffic is growing. However, I have plans to make it an integral Wikipedia process. I have started a discussion on the village pump, and I think you may be interested in it. Please read and reply there. Thanks. --J.L.W.S. The Special One 13:03, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

P.S. I don't think we should have a bot to archive it, as traffic to RFF is still relatively low, compared to, for example, the village pump. If we could configure the bot to archive in, say, one month, instead of 7 days, I would not object to having the bot archive it. --J.L.W.S. The Special One 13:03, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
