This information is not a hoax... while I haven't yet had the time to find the newspaper articles to cite them, it is a true story. It took place in the late 1990's (1998) I believe. The article was published on the cover of the New Haven Registar, and other CT newspapers as well as receiving a smaller write up in USA today.
Considering the amount of false information that gets kept on wikipedia or at least tagged (this information is not properly cited) it is discouraging that real information be immediately deleted and not just steered to be lost in the shuffle of pages or at lease made available for people to contribute and or further cite with the more thorough information.
Furthermore... a "legend" (as defined by dictionary.com is a nonhistorical or unverifiable story handed down by tradition from earlier times and popularly accepted as historical.
Wikipedia has posted articles of other legends... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chupacabra I would like to see someone accurately cite the real existence of a chupacabre and if wikipedia cannot verify it, then that article should be removed...
